Abstract

Technological advances and competition in the 21st-century demand that students enhance their knowledge and skills. The Common Knowledge Construction Model (CKCM) can effectively influence students' academic skills and achievements in chemistry. This study examined the impact of CKCM integrated with ethnoscience and podcasts on improving science process skills and student learning outcomes. A quasi-experimental design with cluster random sampling was employed to select experimental and control groups from the population of specialization 11th-grade science program  (five classes) in a senior high school in Boyolali Regency. Multiple-choice questions were used to measure science process skills and learning outcomes. Descriptive analysis and hypothesis testing were conducted using the Kruskal-Wallis test. The results revealed a significance value of 0.000 in both hypothesis tests for science process skills and learning outcomes. A significance value of less than 0.05 indicates that the application of CKCM positively impacts both variables. Integrating ethnoscience provides a deeper understanding by building culturally contextualized logical thinking. Supported by podcast media, it creates a dynamic and engaging learning environment that helps students actively construct their knowledge. This research contributes to developing the CKCM learning model mediated by podcasts to empower chemistry knowledge and science process skills, preparing students to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of integrating the Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) approach with comic-based learning and the Think Talk Write (TTW) model on student learning activities and achievements in fundamental chemistry. Focusing on chemical reactions (combustion, rusting, fermentation, etc.) and laws (Dalton’s, Proust’s, Gay-Lussac’s, etc.), the research adopts a pretest-posttest non-equivalent control group design in a quasi-experimental setting with 36 students divided equally between control and experimental groups. Comparative analysis shows that the experimental group outperforms the control group in learning activities and achievements. The experimental group, subjected to the CRT and TTW model, demonstrates significantly higher engagement in learning activities. The N-Gain Score test reveals a notable increase in learning effectiveness—56.40% for the experimental group versus 29.69% for the control group, indicating the latter's relative ineffectiveness. In learning achievement, the experimental group exhibits a considerable improvement of 67.20%, while the control group shows a moderate gain of 50.12%. The results of the Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) test, with the positive effect of integrating CRT with comics and the TTW model on student learning activities and achievements. The study highlights the efficacy of this approach in enhancing students' understanding and engagement in chemistry, suggesting a promising direction for future educational practices.

Abstract

The increasing release of synthetic dyes, particularly methylene blue (MB), from textile effluents has become a major environmental andhealth concern, highlighting the urgent need for efficient remediation strategies. Adsorption remains one of the most effective techniques for dye removal due to its simplicity, low cost, and high efficiency. This review discusses the surface chemistry and adsorption behavior of MB on functionalized carbon-based materials, emphasizing how physicochemical characteristics, surface modifications, and functional groups influence adsorption capacity and selectivity. Recent progress in developing engineered carbonaceous adsorbents—such as activated carbon (AC), graphene derivatives, carbon nanotubes, and hybrid carbon composites—has significantly improved the removal performance of MB through enhanced structural and chemical interactions. The ACHC-KOM-1 carbon composite, for instance, exhibits remarkable photocatalytic-assisted adsorption, achieving complete MB degradation under optimized conditions. Surface functional groups and pore architecture are decisive factors governing adsorption efficiency. Oxygen-containing moieties, including carboxyl (–COOH) and hydroxyl (–OH), create active sites that facilitate electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding with cationic MB molecules. Nitrogen functionalities (–N), introduced via heteroatom doping, enhance electron-donating properties and π–π interactions between MB aromatic rings and the conjugated carbon framework, thereby strengthening molecular affinity. Pore dimensions further regulate accessibility and diffusion, with micropores (<2 nm) providing strong confinement and high adsorption energy, while mesopores (2–50 nm) promote rapid diffusion and prevent pore blockage. The synergistic combination of abundant surface functionalities and hierarchical porosity governs the overall adsorption capacity, kinetics, stability, and regeneration potential of carbon-based adsorbents for dye removal. The mechanistic framework presented here distinguishes biomass-derived and non-biomass carbon adsorbents, enabling rational design of high-performance materials. These findings offer practical optimization guidelines for industrial-scale methylene blue removal while supporting sustainable, circular-economy-aligned water purification technologies.

Abstract

This study aims to explore inquiry-based experiments' educational aspects, levels of inquiry, and contributions to sustainability literacy. In this study, a systematic literature review and bibliometric analysis were used. A systematic literature review in this study used a PRISMA flow diagram, and the bibliometric analysis was conducted using VOS Viewer. Using systematic literature review 79 articles were analyzed, focusing on three main aspects: pedagogy/education, levels of inquiry, and sustainability literacy. A bibliometric analysis was also used in this study.  A RIS format of articles was compiled and then used for the bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer. The bibliometric analysis focused on network overlay, density visualization, and author and co-author relationships. The results of this study indicate that inquiry-based experiments significantly enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts, motivation, and essential scientific skills such as hypothesis formulation, experiment design, data collection, and analysis. This literature review also reveals a gap in integrating sustainability literacy into inquiry-based experiments. Although some studies have incorporated green chemistry principles and real-world applications, only a few explicitly promote sustainability literacy. This underscores an opportunity for future research to design inquiry-based experiments that more directly address sustainability literacy.

Abstract

In this study, a sustainable mesoporous silica material was synthesized using gelatin as a co-template (GSBA-15), followed by the incorporation of iron oxide (Fe₂O₃) to enhance its adsorption performance toward methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO). Tamarindus indica pulp extract (TIE) was employed as a natural and environmentally benign activating agent, providing organic functionalities that facilitated material synthesis and surface modification. The adsorption performance of the synthesized materials, namely GSBA-15 and Fe₂O₃/GSBA-15-TIE, was evaluated using UV–Vis spectrophotometry. Under optimal adsorption conditions, the maximum adsorption capacities for MB were 176.062 and 183.497 mg.g⁻¹ for GSBA-15 and Fe₂O₃/GSBA-15-TIE, respectively. For MO, the corresponding adsorption capacities were 15.582 and 16.000 mg.g⁻¹. Kinetic studies revealed that the adsorption of both dyes was best described by the pseudo-second-order model, suggesting that chemisorption played a dominant role in the adsorption process. The enhanced adsorption performance of Fe₂O₃/GSBA-15-TIE compared with pristine GSBA-15 demonstrates the beneficial effects of iron oxide incorporation and TIE activation. These findings highlight the potential of Fe₂O₃/GSBA-15-TIE as a sustainable and efficient adsorbent for dye removal in wastewater treatment applications.
