Abstract

The integration of Interactive Whiteboard (IWB) technology into Arabic literacy instruction has drawn growing interest, particularly in pesantren (Islamic boarding schools), where traditional methods still prevail. Existing research largely addresses general or ESL contexts, leaving a gap in understanding IWB use in Islamic educational settings. This study explores the effectiveness of IWBs in enhancing Arabic reading proficiency, with a focus on student engagement, comprehension, and pedagogical outcomes. A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving 60 third-grade Tsanawiyah students at Pesantren Darullughah Wadda’wah. Using a quasi-experimental design, the study included pre- and post-tests, classroom observations, and interviews. Results show a significant improvement in reading skills, with post-test scores increasing by 24.4 percentage points (from 54.2 to 78.6; p < 0.01, d = 1.15). IWBs also promoted interactive learning and peer collaboration. Qualitative data supported these findings, highlighting enhanced student participation and classroom engagement. Despite positive outcomes, challenges such as insufficient teacher training and limited infrastructure were noted. The study contributes to the discourse on digital transformation in Arabic education and suggests that IWBs can effectively bridge traditional and modern pedagogical approaches in pesantren, offering a scalable model for improving literacy and learner interaction in Islamic educational contexts.

Abstract

Observations and interviews that have been carried out by researchers at some Mustawa tsanawi that some students are not sufficient with the existing methods that students learn and some students want new methods, because some students want to allow them to express what they want and expand their thinking, and therefore the researcher put a new way besides the method used by the pesantren, and because the researcher saw that some students wanted to expand their thinking, and improve the way they expressed themselves on speaking skills, and by looking at the conditions that occurred, the researcher wanted to test the effectiveness of using munaqosah fiqih with Arabic to improve speaking skills in the third grade Tsanawi at the Darullughah Wadda'wah Bangil Pasuruan Islamic boarding school, and the researcher wrote two problem formulations: how to use munaqosah fiqih in Arabic to improve skills speaking in the third grade Tsanawi at the Darullughah Wadda'wah Bangil Pasuruan Islamic boarding school? And what is the effectiveness of munaqosah fiqih with Arabic to improve speaking skills in the third grade Tsanawi at the Darullughah Wadda'wah Bangil Pasuruan Islamic boarding school ?. And the approach used by the researcher is a quantitative approach, and in terms of its implementation, it uses an experimental method, because the researcher tests the hypothesis and the existing variables, and the researcher collects data by observation, interview, and test. The researcher draws the conclusion of this study that the degree T Count in this study is 4.63 greater than the degree T Table at the standard 5% (2.0), and from the degree T Table on the standard 1% (2.66), it is known that the hypothesis in this study is accepted, and this suggests that the use of Munaqosah Fiqih with Arabic in Arabic learning to develop EFFECTIVE speaking skills. Abstract

Freedom in the context of Islamic education is understood as the freedom to choose a way of life that aligns with religious teachings, while in Western philosophy, it is more focused on autonomy and critical thinking within a pluralistic society. This article explores the relationship between freedom and responsibility in education by comparing Islamic and Western perspectives through a qualitative literature review of both classical and contemporary works. The findings indicate that, despite differences in approach, both traditions agree that freedom must always be accompanied by responsibility to develop individuals who are not only intellectually capable but also contribute positively to society. An ideal education system should integrate these two values to shape well-rounded individuals—intellectually, morally, and socially—ensuring that education remains holistic and relevant in the era of globalization. This study provides deeper insights into how education can cultivate individuals who are not only intelligent but also responsible, both personally and socially, thereby contributing to the formulation of more relevant and applicable educational objectives in today’s interconnected world.

Abstract

Arabic language instruction in secondary Islamic education has traditionally relied on text-based explanation and memorization, which often fails to address learners’ cognitive diversity and engagement in digital learning environments. This study aims to develop and evaluate a multimodal instructional design model integrating infographics and interactive videos to enhance Arabic language learning, particularly vocabulary and grammar mastery. Grounded in Mayer’s Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning and structured through the ADDIE framework, the study employed an exploratory sequential mixed-methods approach. Data was collected through pre- and post-tests, classroom observations, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews involving 60 Madrasah ‘Aliyah students divided into experimental and control groups. The multimodal materials were developed using Canva, Powtoon, and H5P and implemented over six weeks. Quantitative results showed a statistically significant improvement in the experimental group’s vocabulary and grammar achievement (p < .05), while qualitative findings indicated increased motivation, engagement, and conceptual understanding. The novelty of this study lies in its empirically validated multimodal instructional design model that systematically integrates visual and interactive elements within Arabic language pedagogy. The findings suggest that sustained teacher training in digital pedagogy is essential to support the effective implementation and scalability of multimodal learning in Arabic education.

Abstract

This study investigates the pedagogical structure and scaffolding mechanisms within Pengantar Belajar Ilmu Nahwu by Al-Habib Hasan bin Ahmad Baharun, a foundational Arabic syntax textbook widely used in pesantren education in Indonesia. While previous studies on Arabic grammar learning have primarily emphasized external scaffolding through instructional strategies or digital technologies, limited attention has been paid to the internal scaffolding embedded within traditional nahwu textbooks themselves. Grounded in Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory and the scaffolding framework of Wood, Bruner, and Ross, this qualitative content analysis examines how the text sequentially supports novice learners in mastering Arabic syntax. The findings identify three interrelated scaffolding stages conceptual, procedural, and integrative through which syntactic awareness is progressively developed using simplified examples, repetitive sentence patterns, and contextualized explanations. A distinctive pedagogical feature of the book is its early emphasis on phonological recognition (ḍammah, fatḥah, and kasrah) prior to introducing abstract grammatical terminology, which functions as a cognitive bridge for beginners. The study concludes that Pengantar Belajar Ilmu Nahwu exemplifies an effective model of internal scaffolding, demonstrating how traditional Arabic grammar materials can align with contemporary educational psychology to support novice syntax learning in pesantren and similar educational contexts.

Abstract

Mastering Arabic syntax (nahwu), particularly the system of i‘rab (case inflection), poses persistent challenges for non-native learners in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren). This study investigates the pedagogical design and instructional impact of Kitab I’rab authored by Habib Hasan Baharun, founder of Pondok Pesantren Darullughah Wadda’wah (Dalwa), Indonesia. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research involved 120 intermediate-level students and Arabic teachers through observations, interviews, and questionnaires. The findings reveal that the I’rab Method promotes grammatical awareness, student engagement, and instructional clarity through simplified explanations, contextual examples, and emotionally resonant content. This method contrasts sharply with traditional models by aligning with constructivist theory and integrating multimodal, affective, and cultural learning dimensions. The study concludes that the Kitab I’rab serves as an effective localized grammar tool that bridges classical Arabic rigor with contemporary learner needs. Its practical application offers a replicable model for other pesantren and Islamic institutions seeking to revitalize Arabic grammar education.
