Abstract

The study of the transformation of Islamic thought in Indonesia is very important to see the connection between the Middle East and Indonesia. The discourse of Islamic renewal developed along with the complexity of the conditions in the Middle East, as well as the strengthening of the practice of purifying Islam and western modernism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. KH. Abdurrahman Wahid is one of the many figures who contributed his thoughts in transforming Islam into Indonesian cultural values. Related to this, this study tries to look at the Islamic thoughts of KH. Abdurrahman Wahud in the late 20th century. In a work, namely Cosmopolitan Islam (Indonesian Values and Cultural Transformation), he presents Islam as a religion that gives freedom to everyone to work without being limited by anything, such as political and ethnic identity. In this study, the author uses a historical research method consisting of four stages, namely Heuristics, Criticism, Interpretation, Historiography. Thus, this study will focus on the thoughts of KH. Abdurrahman Wahid in the renewal of Indonesian Islam. The results of this study indicate that the thoughts of KH. Abdurrahman Wahid has a close relationship with Islam from three dimensions. The first is in terms of Islamic Theology, Second is Islamic Mysticism and the last is Islamic philosophy. With these three parts, KH. Abdurrahman Wahid believes that Islam will reach its highest point of progress when all expressions and works of individual and group creations are given the same right to life, no matter how deviant or considered heretical. After studying the thoughts of KH. Abdurrahman Wahid, it appears that when choosing Islam as a basis, whatever path is chosen, as long as the foundation of Islam has been firmly embedded, then it will not be a problem. In other words, KH. Abdurrahman Wahid teaches us as Muslims to have an open mind, as well as broad insight.

Abstract

Banten Sultanate was an Islamic kingdom founded by Prince Sabakingking, another name for sultan Maulana Hasanudin in the 16th century on the west coast of Java. Banten Sultanate became one of the centers of Islamic power in West Java and played an important role in the spread of Islam in the archipelago. This research aims first, to know the history of the formation of Banten Sultanate, second, to reveal the strategy of spreading Islam in Banten during the leadership of Prince Sabakingking, third, to describe the development of Islam in Banten during the leadership of Prince Sabakingking. The method used in writing this article is using historical research method through four stages. The stages are heuristics, criticism (external and internal), interpretation, and the last is writing or historical reconstruction (historiography). This research found that the Sultanate of Banten, founded by Maulana Hasanuddin in the 16th century, was one of the important Islamic kingdoms in the archipelago. The sultanate's beginnings were linked to the expansion of the influence of the Demak Kingdom, which sought to control trade routes and end the dominance of the Sunda Kingdom. Pangeran Sabakingking played a central role in building the foundation of Islamic power in Banten, which was marked by the transfer of the center of government to Surosowan and the development of important infrastructure, such as the Great Mosque of Banten and a port that supported trade activities. Through a strategy of spreading Islam that involved ulama and strengthening the economy, Banten succeeded in becoming a center for international trade and the spread of Islam, as well as integrating Islamic teachings into the social and political structure of society.

Abstract

Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the influence of the British EIC (East India Company) on the process of the collapse of the Mughal Empire, researching from the economic stage to the political field in the Indian subcontinent. This article uses qualitative research of a library nature. Library research uses library data, as well as analysis of each source. After collecting several sources, it emerged that the British with their EIC controlled India starting with controlling trade in all strategic areas of the Indian subcontinent as well as collaborating with local residents, and influencing the rulers to obtain more facilities and trade monopoly opportunities. Then, after the rise of the EIC Economy, the next step was to slowly control politics by influencing local regional policies up to the Mughal Empire and carrying out divisive politics in order to prioritize the position of the EIC in India. So it can be concluded that the EIC was the starting point for imperialism in the Indian subcontinent, from economic control to political influence.

Abstract

This research discusses the history of the entry of Islam, the development of Muslim communities, and the challenges faced by Muslim communities in the Indochina region, which includes Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. Despite being a minority, the region's Muslim community has a rich history, from the role of the Kingdom of Champa as a center for the spread of Islam to the influence of colonialism and political conflicts, such as the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia and forced assimilation in Vietnam. The methodology used in this study is a qualitative approach with a library research method. Data is collected from a variety of historical sources, such as academic literature, colonial archives, reports of international institutions, and local historical documents related to the development of Islam. The analysis is conducted descriptively and historically to uncover the roles, transformations, and challenges of the Muslim community over time. The results of the study show that the Muslim community in Indochina faces various dynamics, ranging from cultural integration, political pressure, to identity marginalization. This research confirms the importance of preserving Islamic cultural heritage and manuscripts, as well as the need for international support to strengthen Muslim communities as part of social diversity in the Southeast Asian region.

Abstract

This study aims to historically examine the construction of the Bogor–Jakarta railway line during the Dutch colonial period between 1900 and 1930 and its impact on the socio-economic transformation of the local community. Utilizing a historical methodology encompassing heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, the research draws on secondary literature and colonial archival records as its primary sources. The findings reveal that the railway's development was driven not only by economic interests in plantation logistics but also by military and administrative objectives to exert control over colonial territories. The railway functioned as a critical infrastructure for commodity export while also enhancing territorial connectivity, yet it simultaneously reinforced social disparities between the colonial elites and the indigenous population. The analysis demonstrates that, although the railway system improved the efficiency of people and goods mobility, it also operated as a tool of exclusion, discrimination, and centralized control. It accelerated regional economic growth but marginalized local participation in the developmental process. The study concludes that colonial infrastructure, such as the Bogor–Jakarta railway, represents an ambivalent legacy: it facilitated modernization while perpetuating inequality. This research contributes an interdisciplinary perspective that combines historical analysis with local economic development insights, offering a comprehensive understanding of how colonial transportation systems continue to influence mobility patterns and economic structures in the present day. It also provides a reflective basis for formulating transportation policies that are inclusive and historically informed. Contribution: By combining historical methodology with local economic development insights, the study offers a nuanced understanding of how colonial transportation infrastructure shaped socio-economic transformations and mobility patterns.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the history of the development of ISIS thought as one of the most significant radical and terrorist groups in the 21st century. The study traces the ideological roots of ISIS, including the influence of Salaf-Jihadi ideology, as well as how the group selectively uses religious literature to legitimize its actions. With a historical and multidisciplinary approach, this study uncovers the political, social, and economic factors that supported the emergence and development of ISIS, especially after the United States invasion of Iraq in 2003. The results of the analysis show that ISIS's thinking is not only rooted in extreme religious interpretations, but also influenced by geopolitical chaos, political marginalization, and the failure of local governments in the Middle East region. This study emphasizes the importance of understanding the ISIS phenomenon holistically to design effective strategies in preventing radicalism and terrorism in the future.

Abstract

The Palestinian issue is one of the most complex conflicts in contemporary global politics, reflecting systemic injustice and the failure of international institutions to uphold human rights and national sovereignty. As a country born from the decolonization struggle, Indonesia has consistently voiced support for Palestinian independence, both through diplomatic, humanitarian, and international forums. This article reveals that President Soekarno's speech at the 1955 Asia-Africa Conference (AAC) was not just a symbolic statement, but became the ideological and moral foundation for Indonesia's foreign policy towards Palestine. Through a qualitative approach with a historical-diplomatic method, this article analyzes the content of Soekarno's speech, KAA documents, and the practice of Indonesian diplomacy from the early era of independence to the post-Reformation period. This research demonstrates that the values of anti-colonialism, South-South solidarity, and global justice, as conveyed by Soekarno, remain the foundation of Indonesia's stance towards Palestine to this day. The scientific contribution of this study lies in strengthening the post-colonial perspective in the study of Indonesian diplomacy and affirming the importance of ideological heritage in shaping the direction of value-based foreign policy.
