Abstract

The main problems faced by rural communities in remote villages are inadequate sanitation and limited access to health services, which are quite distant and located in extreme terrain, such as in Desa Adat Poh, Karangasem, situated on the slopes of Mount Agung. In addition, community awareness regarding the importance of family health remains low. Many residents still neglect family health issues. Therefore, the aim of this community service program is to educate residents through sanitation outreach using a personal–humanistic approach. The method used is personal counseling. The stages carried out include: (1) identifying the needs of the partners, (2) conducting outreach and education, (3) implementing assistance and empowerment, and (4) participatory evaluation. As a result, 20 households were provided with sanitation equipment packages and four truckloads of clean water for residents who do not have their own cubang (rainwater storage tanks). Through the personal–humanistic approach, activities were conducted via home visits, providing socio-emotional engagement to residents/partners to raise their awareness of the importance of health and clean sanitation in maintaining family resilience. Alongside outreach and education, demonstrations were also conducted to help residents understand the issues in a real-life context. Thus, it can be concluded that this socio-emotional approach can be an effective strategy for conducting personal outreach in areas where partner communities are dispersed or households are far apart, and for addressing sensitive outreach topics such as sanitation issues.
