Abstract

Abstract

Background. Elderly individuals aged over 60 years experience physical and psychosocial changes that lead to a decline in body function and increase the risk of falls, especially due to intrinsic factors such as age and medical conditions, as well as extrinsic factors such as unsafe environments. Based on the results of a questionnaire at Tresna Werdha Budi Mulia 3 Social Institution, most caregivers did not yet understand the appropriate timing and steps in the prevention and initial management of falls. Therefore, educational activities are needed to improve their knowledge and awareness in preventing fall risks among the elderly.Objective. The purpose of this community service activity is to broaden the knowledge of companions, caregivers, and staff who directly interact with the elderly at Tresna Werdha Budi Mulia 3 Social Institution.Method. The implementation method of this community service activity included a preparation stage (proposal development, survey, observation, and interview), the implementation of interactive education in the form of health education for 23 nursing home staff using PowerPoint and flip chart media, and a quantitative evaluation stage using pre-test and post-test questionnaires to measure the participants’ knowledge improvement regarding fall risks among the elderly.Results. There was a significant relationship in the increase of knowledge about fall risks among the elderly after participants received education on the prevention and management of fall risks during the community service activity. The interactive educational session successfully improved the knowledge of 23 nursing home staff, as measured through quantitative evaluation using pre-test and post-test questionnaires.Conclusion. The staff’s insight will be broadened if they regularly receive refreshed knowledge related to their roles and duties at the institution. It is expected that the top management of the nursing home will continuously organize clinic sessions for all health human resources involved in the activities at the institution.

Abstract

Background: Occupational accidents in Indonesian healthcare facilities continue to occur due to inconsistent implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), particularly in the handling of medical equipment, maintenance of workplace cleanliness, and management of contaminated materials. Methods: This community service program involved 10 clinical staff and included a health education intervention on environmental hygiene, equipment decontamination, and linen management. Pre-test and post-test assessments were administered to measure knowledge improvement, and educational materials were delivered using leaflets and posters. Results: The findings indicate that all respondents (100%) adhered to environmental hygiene procedures, including waste segregation, appropriate use of personal protective equipment, and proper handling of spills and sharp waste. Compliance with equipment decontamination procedures was also high (100%), although 10% of respondents were unaware of the availability of written SOPs. Most respondents performed linen management correctly; however, inconsistencies remained in understanding responsibility for washing and storage. Conclusion: Environmental hygiene was applied optimally, linen management was mostly appropriate despite minor inconsistencies, and equipment decontamination showed strong compliance with established standards. Strengthening written SOPs, regular training, and continuous supervision are recommended to maintain service quality and patient safety.

Abstract

Purpose: The Abdimas team aims to empower Baduy women to read, write, and count, as well as provide health education related to PHBS and demonstrate a healthy toilet renovation Methodology/approach: The community service activities were carried out in Kanekes Village, Baduy Luar, from May to July 2024. The community service approach involved training 40 Baduy women to participate in health education and simple reading, writing, and counting training over three months, including building an example of a healthy toilet Results/findings: Of the 40 who participated until the final evaluation, only 15 remained. This is related to the constraints of the distance to the location, which is far from their homes (activities are centered at the Jaro official residence), and the establishment of a healthy place to wash, bathe, and use the restroom (MCK). Conclutions: The enthusiasm of Baduy women to improve family welfare and increase knowledge is very strong, but it requires support from the local government to assist residents by conducting reading, writing, and arithmetic classes in small groups in adjacent houses. Additionally, there is a need for financial support for the renovation of healthy public toilets. Limitations: The duration of the program may not be sufficient to measure the long-term impact on family well-being and changes in health behavior. Contribution: This community services provides a contextual approach to empowering women in indigenous communities such as Baduy Luar, which are typically seldom reached by modern education and health interventions

Abstract

Background: There are 11 slum areas in Depok City. Slums are correlated with populations that are easily exposed to diseases and have limited economic capabilities, resulting in the lack of hygiene and healthy living behaviors (PHBS), including adequate nutritional needs. This living condition poses a risk of reducing the quality of life of the residents. This research aims to determine the correlation between health status and quality of life to prevent stunting among residents in slum areas of Depok City.  Method: This study employed a quantitative cross-sectional research design. A total of 160 respondents were selected using a non-probability quota sampling technique from a population of 400 heads of households across four identified urban slum areas. Data were collected using the World Health Organization Quality of Life–BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) instrument and were analyzed using Chi-Square test.  Results: All dimensions of the health status variable namely physical environment, social conditions, economic conditions, mental health, healthcare support, and family support demonstrated a significant relationship with each dimension of quality of life, including physical health, psychological health, social relationships, and environmental well-being (all dimensions p < 0.05). All independent variables showed p-values < 0.05 based on Chi-Square analysis.  Conclusion: Given the proven significant influence of health status on the quality of life of residents in slum areas, it is hoped that the Depok City government will undertake development efforts to improve these slum areas so that the Human Development Index (HDI) of Depok City can be achieved, thereby fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
