Abstract

This study aimed to identify the difficulties in learning English Grammar and their strategies to overcome it. The researcher used mixed method with the explanatory sequential mixed methods design. This method involved a two-part project in which the researcher collects quantitative data in the first phase, analyzes the results, and then used the results to develop the qualitative part in the second phase. This research took in English education study program, Pattimura University during this year. Batch 2022 was the subject and 99 students were the population. For the sample, Class A which had 32 students and 6 students were selected as the interview participants. The result showed that material and structural difficulties, as well as psychological difficulties, contributed significantly to the overall difficulties experienced by the participants. Furthermore, students learning strategies to overcome their difficulties in learning English, the data suggests that participants in this study employ a diverse range of strategies to support their learning. While all strategies are utilized, metacognitive strategies and affective strategies seem to be particular prominent. Students also agree that psychological difficulties affect students' ability to learn grammar, particularly fear of mistakes and confidence issues. The last that each student has different learning strategies in overcoming the difficulties that exist. All six students have explained how they overcome their difficulties in learning grammar as well as the psychological difficulties that have affected their ability to learn English grammar. The investigation emphasizes the importance of metacognitive and affective strategies in overcoming psychological difficulties to learning grammar.

Abstract

This study employed a qualitative research design to investigate how teachers use the Quizizz platform as a formative assessment tool in English foreign language (EFL) teaching, and to explore teachers' perceptions of using Quizizz. The researchers conducted a preliminary study in Ambon, to identify teachers who were using Quizizz for formative assessment. Four teachers from SMA Negeri 2 Ambon were then selected as the sample for the present study. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews. The findings reveal that the teachers demonstrated a thoughtful and structured approach to integrating Quizizz into their lessons. They strategically designed Quizizz assessments to target key language skills like vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension. The teachers perceived several benefits of using Quizizz, including enhanced student engagement and motivation, improved learning and comprehension, and more efficient assessment processes. However, challenges were also noted, such as the reliance on stable internet connectivity and issues of digital equity, where not all students had access to the necessary devices.

Abstract

The aims of this research were to identify the difficulties faced by EFL students in microteaching class, to find out the most significant difficulties and the strategies to overcome the difficulties faced by EFL students in microteaching class for sixth semester students in the English Education Study Program of Pattimura University. To obtain information from EFL students, this research used explanatory mixed method involving questionnaires and interviews to collected the data. The questionnaires are used to answer the identifying students and interviews are used to answer strategies used by students in microteaching classes. The participants of the research were from 37 students of class A in the sixth semester class students of 2020 in academic year 2023/2024, at English Education Study Program, Pattimura University. The results of questionnaires showed that difficulties face by EFL students as prospective teachers in the procedural category 45%, managerial category 65%, psychological category 55%, instructional category 41%, and professional category 29%. While, the result of the interview and questionnaire also showed that most of the EFL students’ difficulty in managerial category. Based on questionnaire result 65% EFL students as prospective teachers had difficulties in managerial category namely difficulty in planning advance the contents of the material, difficulty in explaining the material to the participants, difficulty in managing the classrom, difficulty in using series of teaching strategies according to strategy planning and material and difficulty in controlling the class activity. While, based on interview result students mentioned that they had difficulties also in managerial category namely difficulty in using series of teaching strategies and explaining the material. The strategies that EFL students used to overcome their difficulties based on interviews results are more practice, time management, discuss with the lecturer and friends, watching videos on the internet/YouTube, and learn more. Most of them always practice more to overcome their difficulties in microteaching classes.

Abstract

The research context in this study is to find a correlation between students' learning styles and their achievement in speaking courses. This study aims to determine whether or not there is a correlation between students' learning styles (as variable X) and their achievement in speaking class (as variable Y) in odd-semester students in 2023 at Pattimura University. There were 54 students taken as the sample of this study who were determined by using simple random sampling. The collected data were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment Correlation and the instruments used were students’ speaking achievement and questionnaire. The results showed that the visual learning style had the highest mean value among the three types. Based on rxy: 0.624, the correlation between students’ learning styles and their speaking achievement is strong. Speaking fluency is a key indicator of language learning, and understanding one's learning style can help students learn more efficiently and successfully.
