Abstract

This study investigates lesson study research trends through bibliometric analysis on widely distributed Google Scholar (GS) and Scopus databases. We reviewed 997 papers from GS and 200 documents from the Scopus database searched using Harzing's Publish on May 6 2023. A descriptive study approach was used to investigate the data. The result of this study is that the number of lesson study documents has increased over the last decade (2012-2022). The most productive author based on GS  is R Huang from the United States, and the full author based on Scopus is E. Saito from Australia. While the prominent authors based on the highest citations are Fernandez Yoshida, based on GS, and Dudley, with the highest citations based on Scopus. The “International Journal for Lesson and Learning Studies” in the last decade is the most source of lesson study documents. Based on VosViewer visualization, Rosa is the author who has the most co-authorship papers and total link strength. The VosViewer displays four clusters related to lesson study: community, context, observation, and participation. Our strong recommendations regarding this study are lesson study research related to literacy, numeracy, and mathematical abilities. The results can assist relevant researchers in understanding trends in lesson study research and recommend guidelines for other studies.

Abstract

Higher-order thinking (HOT) skills are needed to analyze, evaluate, and solve problems. HOTS is an essential ability that students must have as a provision for the future and the 21st Century. However, no bibliometric research has linked Crossref, Scopus, and Google Scholar (GS) preferences on Harzing's Publish or Perish (PoP) software. This research aims to identify search preferences in PoP software version 8.9.4554.8721. The sample critical phrases entered in the preference menu are Higher-order thinking skills (HOTs) with a time range from 2018 to 2023. The library study research method used is bibliometric analysis. Metadata in the form of RIS/Refmanager files obtained from PoP is used to visualize data through VosViewer software. CSV data is used to identify top authors and top sources based on each preference. The phrases or keywords used were "HOTs," Mathematics" in GS, Crossref, and Scopus preferences. The results show four clusters of HOTS: ability, student, effect, and category. The top authors cited in Scopus are Hadi et al., Hobri et al. in GS, and Ichsan et al. in Crossref. HOTS needs to be researched more from various perspectives and methods. We recommend that future HOTS research be linked to real life to bridge the quite abstract concept of HOTS.

Abstract

Kegiatan ini didasari learning loss pada saat Covid-19 yang berdampak munculnya murid slow learner akibat adanya kebijakan belajar dari rumah. Tujuan kegiatan ini adalah untuk menguji tingkat efektivitas “Puzzle Rumah Perkalian” dalam menunjang konsep matematika dasar murid slow leraner di Kawasan Perbatasan Darat Indonesia dengan Republik Demokratik Timor Leste. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode kuantitatif dengan jenis eksperimen, yaitu One-Group Pretest-Posttest. Tahapan pelaksanaan penelitian ini dimulai dari perencanaan, pelaksanaan pre test, eksperimen dan postest. Jumlah murid yang terlibat adalah 18 orang siswa sekolah dasar kelas 4. Metode pengumpulan informasi merupakan tes, serta dokumentasi. Metode analisa data yang dipakai merupakan analisa statistik deskriptif, analisa N- Gain serta analisa inferensial. Hasil riset membuktikan kalau nilai rerata pretest merupakan 40,51 serta nilai rerata post test merupakan 66,29. Nyata kalau terjadi kenaikan sehabis peserta didik dikasihkan perlakuan Pembelajaran matematika memakai“ Puzzle Rumah Perkalian” sebesar 25,78 serta rerata N-gain ialah 0,43 termasuk kategori sedang. Bersumber pada hasil studi ini, bisa disimpulkan kalau aplikasi “Puzzle Rumah Perkalian” pada pembelajaran matematika materi operasi bilangan bulat khususnya pada operasi perkalian bisa mendukung matematika dasar anak didik slow learner di Area Perbatasan. Konsep berikutnya yang hendak digarap merupakan meningkatkan alat pembelajaran matematika yang sesuai buat anak didik slow learner di Area Perbatasan.

Abstract

The teachers need help to convey the differences between relations and functions and to make concrete examples. The purpose of the community service team is to help students find and comprehend the theory and concept about relations and functions material for grade 8 by introducing and demonstrating the Papan Resi visual aid.The service held in SMPK Aloysius Niki-Niki, Timor Tengah Utara District, Nusa Tenggara Timur. The service method is based on action research: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The data are collected based on the audiences' observation sheets and response sheets. Data analysis used data triangulation. The results of this community service are that introducing and demonstrating Papan Resi could be beneficial for increasing students' comprehension of SMPK Aloysius Niki-Niki. The constructivist situation influences it, and the service needs to be held for other teaching aids

Abstract

Integrating local wisdom into student worksheets enhances the meaningfulness and cultural relevance of mathematics learning. However, few student worksheets integrate local wisdom related to dryland agriculture—a practice central to the socio-cultural and economic life of the semi-arid North Central Timor District—to support students’ numeracy skills. Dryland agriculture provides rich real-life quantitative contexts that are highly relevant for developing students’ numeracy competencies. Therefore, this study aimed to develop and evaluate student worksheets grounded in local dryland agriculture using a research and development approach with Tessmer’s formative evaluation model involving 26 purposively selected eighth-grade students. Data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, and numeracy tests, then analyzed using interactive qualitative analysis alongside descriptive and inferential statistics. The results indicate that the developed worksheets are valid (77.67%) and practical, as evidenced by an 80.44% positive student response rate. Furthermore, the field test results demonstrated the effectiveness of the student worksheets, as indicated by a significant improvement in students’ numeracy scores from pretest to posttest. These findings suggest that culturally grounded, context-based student worksheets can effectively enhance students’ numeracy development in rural dryland contexts while also supporting students’ readiness for national mathematics assessments.

Abstract

Disparities in the academic readiness of first-year university students remain evident, continuing to challenge higher education systems, particularly when entrance assessments fail to reflect foundational competencies accurately. This study investigates whether gender-based differences exist in entrance exam performance and analyzes students' maximum scores to assess peak academic achievement in two core domains: English proficiency and Quantitative Knowledge. The research was conducted at a public university in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, involving 1,186 students admitted through the independent selection pathway. A comparative quantitative approach was applied using descriptive statistics, Welch’s t-test, and boxplot visualizations in JASP 0.18.3 software. The results showed no statistically significant gender differences in either domain (English: p = 0.504, d = 0.040; Quantitative: p = 0.543, d = –0.036), with nearly identical mean scores and score variability. However, the maximum scores of 17/20 in English and 13/20 in Quantitative Knowledge were far below the full mark, indicating systemic gaps in academic preparedness and possible ceiling effects in test design. These findings support the need to redesign entrance assessments using Item Response Theory (IRT) and to implement bridging or matriculation programs. These interventions can help universities and policymakers ensure fairer and inclusive pathways to promote equitable access and success in higher education.

Abstract

The community of Bitefa Village in North Central Timor Regency (TTU) keeps farming corn on dry land as they have done for generations, but they are not aware of the mathematical activities that could be used as a source of mathematics education. The purpose of this study is to explore ethnomathematical activities in the dryland farming culture of corn cultivation in Bitefa Village.  The research method is qualitative with an ethnographic approach. Spradley's ethnographic approach research sequence is used to identify, classify, and interpret ethnomathematical activities embedded locally in traditional dry farming. Data collection is through participatory observation, interviews, and recording of agricultural artefacts. Analysis was conducted using Spradley's research sequence approach, domain analysis, taxonomic analysis, component analysis, and cross-domain theme analysis. The results show that spatial planting patterns aim to facilitate weeding and root competition; informal cultural units of measurement are used with functional adequacy and selective metric verification; seasonal decision-making based on local phenological indicators; a hierarchical aggregation system for crop yields (Pulir-Ikat-Kuda) that facilitates calculation, exchange, and estimation; and ritual-social mechanisms that legitimize and coordinate collective agricultural efforts. This study suggests that applying mathematical exercises to traditional corn farming methods, such as comparing or converting local units to standard units and forecasting corn seeds based on farm size, could be a source of learning in mathematics education in the classroom.

Abstract

Traditional funeral rituals contain many mathematical concepts that have not been widely explored. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the mathematical activities contained in the traditional death rituals of the East Noemuti community. The study uses a qualitative, ethnographic approach. The research subjects included atoinamaf (uncles/traditional elders), bereaved families, and community leaders in Haekto Village, East Noemuti District, North Central Timor Regency. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and then analyzed using Spradley's ethnographic analysis techniques, including domain analysis, taxonomy, component analysis, and cultural themes. The results of the study show that in the traditional death rituals of the Noemuti Timur community, there are various ethnomathematical activities, including: (1) tutu panu, which represents a hemispherical space; (2) making coffins and digging rectangular graves of a certain size; (3) nailing the coffin with three blows, symbolizing the concept of sacred numbers; (4) the use of circular silver coins as a symbol of spiritual provisions; and (5) the practice of calculating time in the tanono procession. The traditional death rituals of the East Noemuti community are spiritually and culturally meaningful, rich with mathematical concepts that can be used as a source of contextual learning.

Abstract

Traditional games offer children numerous benefits, including health, character development, and educational resources. However, these games have yet to be explored as learning tools for students with dyscalculia, particularly in border areas. This research aims to investigate the mathematical concepts embedded in traditional games as part of the local culture in the Indonesia-Timor Leste Border Area (ITLBA) community. Employing an exploratory approach with an ethnographic methodology, the study utilized documentation, observation, and interviews involving 13 children aged 7-14 years and five informants from the border area. Findings revealed mathematical concepts, including geometry and numerical concepts, within traditional games such as Galah Asin, Kelereng, Siki Doka, and Congklak. Moreover, these games instilled character values such as patriotism and sportsmanship. Children in the ITLBA region benefited from traditional games through social interaction, fostering kinship, cooperation, responsibility, and enhancing psychomotor skills. Ethnomathematics research on traditional games at ITLBA suggests utilizing these games as a platform for mathematics education, especially for students with disabilities. Leveraging classic games can help bridge the gap for students with disabilities, facilitating their numerical skills development within the educational context.
