Abstract

Kendal District has two primary waste management facilities: the Pasar Kendal Composting House and the Jatirejo Composting House. This study meticulously evaluates the operational performance of these facilities throughout the 2021-2022 timeframe, uncovering a stark contrast in their waste processing achievements. In the year 2021, the Jatirejo facility managed to process only a paltry 0.35% of the total waste received, starkly juxtaposed against the Pasar Kendal facility, which impressively reduced 100% of its waste. The subsequent year, 2022, witnessed a dramatic shift in performance metrics: Jatirejo saw a significant uptick in its processing capacity to 50.00%, while Pasar Kendal experienced a reduction in efficiency, processing only 58.81% of its waste. This research accentuates the untapped potential for amplifying the capacity and effectiveness of composting as a waste management strategy in Kendal District, where a considerable volume of waste is composed of food remnants. The study proposes a series of solutions aimed at fortifying waste management capabilities, including infrastructure enhancement, comprehensive community education programs, and the enactment of more stringent governmental policies to facilitate improvement in waste processing rates.

Abstract

Microalgae has emerged as a promising approach for removing substrate and nutrient from wastewater with the concomitant biofuel production. The substrate and nutrient removal are influenced by several factors such as C/N ratio, F/M ratio, pH, and DO. This study aims to determine the efficiency of substrate and nutrient removal with the growth rates of microalgae and biomass by varying the addition of aeration and substrate. Intermittently aerated reactors were used with the flow rate of 14 L/minute. The batch reactors were prepared by adding glucose substrate of 50 mg/L (Ra0A), 100 mg/L (Ra0B), and 150 mg/L (Ra0C) without aeration; 50 mg/L (Ra12A), 100 mg/L (Ra12B), and 150 mg/L (Ra12C) with 12-hour aeration, and 50 mg/L (Ra24A), 100 mg/L (Ra24B), and 150 mg/L (Ra24C) with 24-hour aeration. The substrate removal, expressed as chemical oxygen demand (COD) in the reactor with aeration, showed the efficiency of 73.88% ± 2.05 (12-hour aeration), 75.2% ± 3.97 (24hours aeration), and 69.86% ± 5.69(without aeration). Nutrient removal as ammonia-N (NH3-N) gave high removal value of 98.3% ± 0.11 and the removal of nutrient as phosphate (PO3-4) showed the efficiency of 54.3% ± 0.1. The growth rate of microalgae and biomass exhibited the highest value in Ra24C reactor with the values of 0.0229/day and 0.1295/day, respectively. The pH values indicated a shift from normal to alkaline while DO values increased by the addition of 12 and 24-hour aeration.

Abstract

Water is a human need to carry out activities ranging from daily essentials to agricultural needs and others. Domestic wastewater must meet physical, chemical, and biological requirements so that humans cannot be polluted by the water, especially the water around the Pasir Panjang Village area in Batam, Riau Islands. This study aims to determine the potential use of water hyacinth for environmental health. This research was conducted by direct observation and measurement of water quality by grab sampling. Observation results show that not all residents use septic tanks as wastewater treatment results from daily activities. Some residents drain their wastewater directly into water bodies or surrounding land, resulting in decreased environmental aesthetics. Water quality testing for nutrient parameters shows that the quality standards have been met. However, further measurements are needed for total nitrogen and phosphate. Besides that, it also causes a population explosion of water hyacinth. In addition to the ability to treat water hyacinth waste, its economic potential is also analyzed. The growth of water hyacinth is sufficient and fulfills its capacity, and water hyacinth can be used for various crafts that can improve the community's welfare.

Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of an ergonomically redesigned office chair, tailored to meet the anthropometric needs of employees. It addresses common issues associated with prolonged sitting, such as musculoskeletal discomfort and fatigue, which are prevalent in sedentary work environments. Utilizing anthropometric data from prior studies, the redesign incorporates modifications in key chair dimensions—such as seat height, seat depth, and backrest height—to enhance user comfort and reduce physical strain. The ROSA (Rapid Office Strain Assessment) tool was employed to assess posture and ergonomic risk for both the old and redesigned chairs. Findings indicate a significant improvement in ergonomic support and comfort with the new design, supported by a statistically significant reduction in ROSA scores, as confirmed through a paired sample t-test. Although the redesign effectively enhances comfort, further improvements are recommended, including adjustable lumbar support and backrest flexibility. This study underscores the importance of ergonomic adaptations in office furniture to support diverse body types and reduce occupational health risks.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and quantify wood waste produced during the machining of solid wood components using kiln dried Durio zibethinus boards. A descriptive quantitative approach was employed to measure the volume and weight of waste generated at each production stage, including ripping, crosscutting, planing, and thicknessing. Sampling was conducted using a precision digital scale to collect and compare the actual and theoretical waste. The results indicate that only 43% of the raw material volume was utilized in finished components, while 57% was lost as waste, primarily in the form of sawdust, shavings, and offcuts. The thicknesser contributed the largest proportion of waste (58%), followed by the ripsaw (21%), single planer (20%), and jumpsaw (1%). These findings highlight the need for improved raw material selection, more efficient cutting list design, enhanced nesting strategies, and better machine calibration. Implementing these practices can reduce wood waste, improve material efficiency, and minimize occupational exposure to wood dust in furniture manufacturing
