Abstract

Workplace seating that does not match user anthropometry often leads to discomfort and musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). This study evaluates the office chairs used at the Politeknik Industri Furnitur dan Pengolahan Kayu Kendal by combining discomfort analysis and anthropometric mismatch assessment. Thirty-two employees (16 males, 16 females) participated, completing the Nordic Body Map (NBM) questionnaire and providing seated anthropometric measurements. The NBM results revealed that lower back discomfort was the most common complaint, particularly among female respondents, who also reported higher discomfort in the neck, shoulders, and upper back. Mismatch analysis confirmed severe incompatibilities between existing chair dimensions and user anthropometry, with seat height (100% mismatch for both genders) and seat depth (94% for men, 88% for women) as the most problematic. Based on these findings, a redesigned chair was developed, lowering seat height by 30 mm and reducing seat depth by 66 mm, alongside adjustments to backrest and armrest dimensions. Comparison with Indonesian (SNI) and international ergonomic standards (ISO 9241-5, BIFMA G1, EN 1335-1) showed that the redesign falls within recommended ranges. The study demonstrates how anthropometry-based redesign can reduce mismatch and improve comfort, providing practical guidance for the local furniture industry.

Abstract

Abstract

Aim: The purpose of this study was to determine the efficiency and characteristics of pig wastewater treatment. This was to be achieved using ABR with the addition of effective microorganism4 (EM4) as a bio-activator during the startup process (R1) and without EM4 (R2). Methodology and Results: Piggery wastewater is poured into ABR with 12 hours HRT (hydraulic retention time), though it is reduced to 6 hours after the concentration is stable. The COD removal efficiency at 12 hours HRT was 60% (R1) and 51% (R2). However, the results did not change significantly, since the 6 hours HRT COD efficiency was 57.8% (R1) and 51.3% (R2). The biomass growth rate at R1 is faster than R2 with Food to Microorganism Ratio (F/M) 0.4-0.89 (R1) and 0.68-1.38 (R2) while the yield of methane gas formation was 0.25-0.28 L-CH4/g-COD. Conclusion, significance, and impact study: COD effluent is the total organic material present in the piggery wastewater effluent, which is discharged into water bodies without meeting the set quality standards. This damages the quality of water bodies. The wastewater treatment needs to be prioritized to meet quality standards of COD effluent. Also, the addition of EM4 to the activated sludge reactor improves the COD removal efficiency and biomass growth, though advanced treatment is still needed for piggery wastewater.

Abstract

Mojokerto City, located in East Java, grapples with a steadily rising waste generation trend accentuated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing data from the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN) and supplemented with an exhaustive literature review, this study scrutinizes the potential of biodigester technology as a solution to this mounting challenge. Mojokerto's waste, consistent in its composition from 2019 to 2022, is dominated by food waste, making it an ideal candidate for biodigester intervention. The study revealed that existing biodigester facilities in Mojokerto vary in their waste reduction efficiencies yet collectively demonstrate the viability of converting food waste to energy. For instance, the TPS 3R Magersari Berseri facility showcased an impressive waste reduction rate of 85.0%, processing 62.05 tons out of 73 tons of waste received annually. Comparative analyses of other facilities like TPS 3R Pulorejo "Cahaya Berseri" and TPS 3R Muria Berseri were also conducted, revealing varying degrees of efficiency. These facilities underscore the potential of biodigester technology in managing the rising tide of waste and contributing to sustainable energy generation. The findings of this study also call for increased awareness about food conservation, improved waste segregation at the source, and the promotion of composting and other organic waste processing methods, thereby optimizing the overall efficiency of waste management in the city. .
