Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The advancement of internet technology has significantly increased the popularity of online games as a source of entertainment across different age groups, particularly among university students. One of the most popular games is Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB), a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) game that not only prioritizes competitive gameplay but also facilitates interaction and communication among players. Within these interactions, trash-talk frequently occurs, referring to verbal expressions such as taunts, sarcasm, and the use of offensive language during gameplay. This study seeks to explore and describe the phenomenon of trash-talk in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang among students of Mulawarman University in Samarinda, East Kalimantan. This research adopts a qualitative approach using a descriptive method. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with Mulawarman University students who actively engage in playing Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. The data were then analyzed qualitatively through an inductive approach to identify the forms, meanings, and contributing factors associated with the emergence of trash-talk in the game. The results reveal that trash-talk has become an integral part of gaming culture and is generally perceived as a normal practice by players. Players engage in trash-talk for various reasons, including emotional expression, responding to provocation, strengthening team solidarity, and employing psychological tactics to distract opponents. The identified forms of trash-talk include the use of harsh language, ridicule of players’ performance, sarcasm, and indirect mockery, which may be directed toward both opponents and teammates. The anonymity provided by online gaming environments further facilitates such behavior and, in certain instances, involves discriminatory elements

Abstract

This research is entitled Representation of Belis as Cultural Identity of East Nusa Tenggara in the Film Nona Manis Sayange. The background of the research suggests that the belis tradition plays an important role as a marker of cultural identity in East Nusa Tenggara, but also faces social problems including economic burdens, power relations, and gender dimensions that are mediated and represented through film. This research aims to identify and interpret the meaning of belis in the film Nona Manis Sayange 2023. The method used is qualitative with Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis to read signs at three levels of significance (denotation, connotation, and myth), as well as Stuart Hall's representational framework to understand the process of encoding-decoding meaning in the film text. Primary data in the form of selected scenes in a number of key scenes from the film's duration of 1 hour 42 minutes, then analyzed textually and visually. The results show that the film represents belis as a multi-layered phenomenon: denotatively it appears as a traditional ritual that connects families; connotatively it functions as an indicator of social status, economic pressure, and an arena for gender negotiation; at the mythical level, the film provokes discourse that belis can be a determinant of self-esteem and worthiness. However, the film also opens up space for criticism and reinterpretation, showing that belis can be preserved as a cultural heritage while being recontextualized to be more just and humane. The implications of this research recommend that cultural representation in the media be carried out contextually, reflectively, and sensitively to social dynamics.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the use of Instagram as a fashion reference among female students of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), Universitas Mulawarman, through the Instagram account @natasharizkynew. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach using the Uses and Gratifications theory, which focuses on four audience needs: information, personal identity, social interaction, and entertainment. Informants were selected using purposive sampling, consisting of Muslim female students who actively use Instagram, follow @natasharizkynew, and have adopted fashion references from the account in their daily lives. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, including data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the Instagram account @natasharizkynew fulfills students' information needs by providing references for modest, syar'i, and fashionable Muslim clothing suitable for campus activities. The account also contributes to strengthening personal identity by increasing self-confidence and helping students develop a style that aligns with their personality and values. In terms of social interaction, the content becomes a topic of discussion and fosters connections with others who share similar interests. Furthermore, the account provides entertainment by creating positive emotional experiences, including feelings of happiness, comfort, tranquility, and relief from boredom. Therefore, Instagram as a fashion reference serves not only as a source of information but also as a medium for shaping identity, enhancing social relationships, and supporting the emotional well-being of Muslim female students in the digital era..

Abstract

This study aims to analyze interpersonal communication between parents and female student smokers in the Communication Studies Program at Mulawarman University using the Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation (FIRO) theory. This study employed a qualitative case study approach involving five female students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive analysis model. The findings indicate that the interpersonal needs of inclusion, control, and affection interact in shaping interpersonal communication between parents and daughters. Participants who felt accepted, were given opportunities to express themselves, and received emotional support from their parents demonstrated greater openness in communication. In contrast, dominant parental control and judgmental responses encouraged participants to conceal their smoking behavior. The study also identified differences between expressed and wanted behaviors, indicating that participants limited self-disclosure while still expecting harmonious relationships with their parents. These findings highlight the importance of fulfilling interpersonal needs when discussing socially stigmatized issues.

Abstract

Serial Netflix The 8 Show mengangkat isu kesenjangan sosial yang merepresentasikan realitas Korea Selatan melalui keadaan ekonomi, status, dan kekuasaan.

Abstract

This study examines simulacra as a form of distortion of the meaning of the ritual of the Soul Mass in the video clip "In Count" by the band. Feast which is released in 2023. This video clip is interesting to study because it presents a representation of religious rituals that is full of visual symbols, but placed in a digital culture context that emphasizes media documentation, visibility, and connectivity. This research aims to understand how simulacra is displayed as a distortion of the meaning of the ritual of the Soul Mass through visual symbols that appear in a series of scenes. The method used is interpretive qualitative research with Roland Barthes semiotic analysis, which includes the reading of denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings. The selection of units of analysis was carried out through Jean Baudrillard's simulacra theory, focusing on ten scenes representing the five aspects of simulacra. The results show that these video clips build on the dominant myth that represents social media and digital connectivity as a new authority in contemporary religious practices. The ritual of the Mass of the Spirits is no longer fully interpreted as a sacred experience that is transcendent, but is reduced to a visual performance that can be recorded, displayed, and socially validated. These findings confirm the existence of a process of desacralization of worship, as well as serve as a social critique of the shift in the religious orientation of the people in today's visual and digital culture.
