Abstract

Rice is one of the agricultural commodities that plays an important role in Indonesia's food security because it is the main staple food for the community. The role of rice as a strategic agricultural commodity in Central Java and as one of the largest rice production centers in Indonesia means that changes in rice prices have a significant impact on the economy and welfare of both farmers and consumers. Rice price movements in Central Java Province, both at the farmer and consumer levels, experience fluctuations. Fluctuations in rice prices are caused by several factors that affect rice prices in Central Java. The research method used is the Secondary Data Analysis (SDA) method. The type of data used is time series data for the period January 2014 - December 2022. The data used is monthly data on grain prices at the farmer level and rice prices at the consumer level. Data analysis was conducted using the AECM (Asymmetric Error Correction Model) method to analyze price transmission patterns. The results of the causality test showed that consumer rice prices influence the formation of corn prices at the producer level. The results of the study indicate that the rice price transmission pattern in Central Java Province is asymmetric in the short term, meaning that consumer prices in the same period are not immediately transmitted to prices at the farmer level.

Abstract

Central Lombok Regency has great potential for corn development, although its production decreased from 84,650 tons in 2020 to 53,000 tons in 2023. The presence of the Mandalika Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and the World Bank’s I-Core program creates opportunities for agricultural development, marketing, and improvement of infrastructure and regional economic support. This study aims to analyze the factors influencing corn production, measure technical, allocative, and economic efficiency, and identify the factors contributing to technical, allocative, and economic inefficiency. The research employed a quantitative descriptive-analytical method with a Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) approach using the Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) method. The research locations were purposively selected in three villages surrounding the Mandalika SEZ, namely Rambitan, Mujur, and Penujak, with 90 farmer respondents selected through simple random sampling. The results show that land area, labor, and herbicides significantly affect corn production, while seeds, urea fertilizer, and Phonska fertilizer have positive but insignificant effects. In general, corn farmers in Central Lombok are technically efficient but not yet allocatively and economically efficient. Socioeconomic factors that increase technical inefficiency include age, farming experience, farmer group participation, and credit access, while education level and household size reduce it. Allocative inefficiency is influenced by farm distance, whereas economic inefficiency increases with credit access and decreases with farmer group participation and household size

Abstract

Garut is a chili commodity in West Java. However, in recent years, the production of chili in the district has decreased. Chili production in Garut District around 159 thousand tons, or decreased around 13% of production compared to the previous year (BPS, 2025). One of the causes is pest and disease organism (PDO). Recently farmers still rely on chemical pesticides, while have negative impacts on health, ecosystems, environment, and increase PDO resistance. Also, chemical pesticides stated are not in line with the principles of sustainability. The government and penyuluh have also encouraged farmers to adopt integrated pest management (IPM) practices, such as biochemical pesticides, through various policies, extension services, training, and assistance. However, these efforts have not effectively encouraged farmers to adopt biochemical pesticides. Therefore, this study aims to determine and analyze farmer behavior based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) approach to determine the relationship between attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control on farmers' intention to use biochemical pesticides. This study used a quantitative verification method, while the data used were primary data from 100 chili farmer respondents in Cikajang District as a representative center chili production in Garut Regency. Data are collected using a stratified random sampling method. The results showed a positive and significant relationship between attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control on the intention to use biochemical pesticides. The findings of this study indicate the need for interventions that can encourage attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control to increase the use of plant-based pesticides.

Abstract

Changes in agricultural processing systems and the work patterns of tobacco farmers in Morobongo Village reflect the dynamics of adaptation to agricultural modernization. This transformation is driven by technological advancements as well as economic, social, and ecological factors that push farmers toward greater efficiency and productivity. This study aims to analyze the shift from traditional to modern agricultural systems and identify the factors influencing this change. The research, conducted from December 2024 to January 2025, used a case study involving five farmer groups across four hamlets, with data collected through purposive sampling, in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation. Qualitative analysis was carried out through data reduction, thematic categorization, and interpretation. The results show that modernization offers substantial benefits, including reduced labor needs, faster planting processes, and increased yields. However, several challenges remain, such as limited capital, inadequate training, restricted access to machinery, and shortages of skilled human resources. Environmental issues, particularly declining soil fertility due to chemical inputs, also persist. Overall, the success of agricultural transformation requires not only technological availability but also sustained government support through training, subsidies, infrastructure development, and stronger farmer institutions. This study provides useful input for policymakers and offers empirical insight into farmers’ adaptive strategies amid ongoing agricultural change.

Abstract

Talas Pratama (Colocasia esculenta) is one of the promising local food crops that has recently gained popularity due to its high productivity, reaching 7–8 kg of tubers per plant at eight months of age. Alongside tuber production, this crop generates substantial agricultural waste in the form of petioles, stems, and leaves. At present, these by-products are commonly used as vegetables or as supplementary feed for fish. However, to enhance their economic value, such biomass needs to be processed into fish feed in the form of pellets, thereby creating added value that can potentially increase farmers’ income. The specific objectives of this study are to determine the value addition obtained from processing Talas Pratama waste into fish pellets and to calculate the profitability for small-scale entrepreneurs. In the long term, this research contributes to the development of an agribusiness model for local food commodities in line with the researcher’s established roadmap. The study employed a case study approach with a Talas Pratama farmer in Gunajaya Village, Manonjaya District, Tasikmalaya Regency, West Java. Both primary and secondary data were collected and analyzed using descriptive statistics and value-added analysis based on the Hayami method. The results of the study showed that processing Pratama Taro waste into fish pellets had an added value of Rp6.400,00/kg. and the profit obtained by entrepreneurs was Rp2.400,00/kg.

Abstract

Food security disparities in Central Java result in inequality in production, market access, and farmers' welfare. The threat of climate change and limited access for farmers to capital and technology further exacerbate this condition. The low selling price of crops compared to production costs is also a major challenge. Therefore, building the resilience of agricultural food systems is a crucial solution to improve adaptation to change and create more inclusive and sustainable agriculture. This study aims to analyze the resilience of the agricultural food system in overcoming food security disparities and improving the welfare of the community in Central Java Province. The data analysis method used includes a quantitative approach using simple linear regression linear analysis and descriptive analysis.  In the results of the multiple linear regression test analysis, F test of 29.781 was produced with a very significant p value of 0.0. The results of the t-test showed that food resilience had a significant positive effect (t=5.5659; p=0.0), while food security disparity had a significant negative effect (t=3.3169; p=0.0013).  The results of the study showed that 16 districts/cities were in the medium, 10 low, and 9 high categories in their food security levels, spatial analysis showed inequality between regions.  Low regions are vulnerable to supply chain shocks and disasters, while high-resilience regions typically have biophysical, infrastructural and commodity diversification advantages. Strengthening resilience through irrigation rehabilitation, salinity-tolerant varieties, weather-based insurance, and equitable access to technology and resources are some of the policy impacts.  The findings show that improving food security and reducing disparities can improve farmers' well-being in a sustainable manner.

Abstract

Avian Pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) infection poses a significant challenge in intensive broiler farming, as it compromises production performance and increases treatment costs. Meanwhile, phytogenic feed additives derived from natural ingredients such as mangosteen peel are gaining attention as safer and more sustainable alternatives. Nanocapsule technology enables efficient release of active compounds, but its economic feasibility requires systematic evaluation. This study aims to assess the economic impact of using mangosteen peel extract nanocapsules as a phytogenic feed additive in broilers infected with APEC. The analysis was conducted using Income Over Feed Cost (IOFC), Break-Even Value (BEV), and sensitivity simulations based on feed price and biological performance. Results indicate that the additive improves feed efficiency and profit margins, especially under carcass-based marketing scenarios. Simulations yielded economically viable thresholds for active ingredient pricing (P_aBE and P_EFE), which vary according to efficiency levels and market conditions. This approach offers a practical framework for farmers to design adaptive, efficient, and sustainable feed formulations.

Abstract

Rising health awareness is driving the growth of the fermented beverage market, but consumption and processing of healthy beverages in Indonesia are still low compared to sweetened beverages. This study aims to describe the characteristics and consumer behavior of fermented beverages among college students and analyze their segmentation. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method through semi-structured interviews with 25 college students. The results show that consumers are dominated by young adults (19-20 years old) with good health awareness, but low consumption frequency and impulsive nature. Based on the analysis, consumers are segmented into five main groups: Health-conscious, Taste-driven, External Influence, Price-sensitive, and Convenience. It is concluded that each segment has different consumption drivers, so a differentiated marketing strategy is needed. Business actors are advised to develop product variations, educate benefits, and expand distribution to reach each segment effectively.
