Abstract

In academic studies, the Qur'an has become a subject of intellectual discussions and has undergone significant development, engaging with the community on both interpersonal and inter-cognitive levels. Scholarly discourse on the Qur'an has progressed from descriptive-narrative analysis to critical analysis. This article examines the evolution of thought in Qur'anic studies within the academic community, using two analytical frameworks: the Framework of Qur'anic Studies and the history of ideas. The first framework categorizes the types and genres of Qur'anic studies, while the second analyzes shifts in thought related to studying the Qur'an. The article concludes that the evolution of thought in Qur'anic studies has resulted in a Traditionalist-Critical model, characterized by a transmission-theological dimension, with two distinct periods: the initial focus on idraki-ta'rifi (knowledge/understanding of the Qur'an) and a subsequent shift to tadris-naqdi studies (critical studies of the Qur'an). Additionally, the development of Qur'anic studies has led to the creation of a model within the Qur'anic Studies Framework, encompassing Al-Qira'ah Alquran (reading and reciting the Qur'an), Tafhim Alquran (linguistic study and interpretation), Ta'riful Qur'an (introducing new perspectives in Qur'anic knowledge), and Ta'limatul Qur'an (social-community context and analysis of Qur'anic teachings).

Abstract

Hadith regarding music in the neomodern era became the focus of Muslims, where there were many negative things or deviated from Muslims in consuming music so many Muslims assumed that consuming music in life was something that was unlawful. Using the hermeneutical approach of Fazlur Rahman and Khalid about El-Fadl, a study will be carried out to interpret hadiths about music. This research is a literature review that aims to interpret the hadith about music with the hermeneutics of Fazlur Rahman and Khalid about El-Fadl. The primary source in this research is the hadith about music. In addition, the secondary sources used are in the form of several books and journal articles that have the same research focus. Reinterpretation of hadith based on Fazlur Rahman and Khalid M. Aboue El-Fadl's hermeneutics is generally carried out with three aspects, namely the meaning of hadith texts, a socio-historical approach and interpretation of hadiths. The result of the reinterpretation of the hadith about music is to provide a law that music is permissible within the limits of Islamic law.

Abstract

This study discusses the scope of digital literacy studied based on Tafsir al-Mishbah. The goal is to find the verses that indirectly explain digital literacy. That way, it will produce a theory on using digital media from an Islamic point of view. So that the Muslim generation, in particular, can keep pace with technological developments and digital literacy capabilities. This research method uses qualitative research with a library research approach. The primary reference is based on Tafsir al-Mishbah, equipped with books and accredited journals. Through this method, it can be found how to explain the verses of the Qur'an about the concept of digital literacy. The study found that terms related to digital literacy can be expressed through the terms iqra', kitabah, and qalam. Furthermore, the principles of digital literacy in Tafsir al-Mishbah are also found, including the use of digital media (QS. al-Qalam: 1, QS.  al-Alaq: 1); the use of digital media (QS. al-Baqarah: 263, QS. al-Isra: 28, QS.  an-Nisâ: 9 and 63); information selection (QS. al-Hujurât: 6, QS. an-Nūr: 11); content dissemination (QS.  al-Hujurât: 12, QS. an-Nūr: 15); maintaining privacy (QS. an-Nūr: 27-28); and creativity in creating content (QS. Hūd: 37). It can be concluded that the concept of digital literacy according to the Qur'an is a means of goodness, a means of communicating by meeting the requirements of Islamic principles, a means of researching and selectively receiving information, a means of spreading hoax news, advice on maintaining personal data, and as a means of developing creativity in content. These Islamic principles can improve a person's digital literacy competence to keep up with the increasingly rapid development of technology.

Abstract

Contemporary hadith studies have involved many auxiliary sciences, one of which is hermeneutics. As a critical theory, hermeneutics has been utilized by hadith scholars to explore the meanings of hadith not only on the denotative but also on the connotative level. One of the hermeneutical theories that is worth considering and has not been widely used by scholars to read hadith texts is Schleiermacher's objective hermeneutics. Broadly speaking, the main ideas of objective hermeneutics emphasize grammatical interpretation, psychological interpretation, the hermeneutical circle, and the method of divination. Using library research, this study aims to examine the involvement of objective hermeneutics in the study of hadith which some scholars believe is not relevant enough. The results of the study show that the use of objective hermeneutics proves to be relevant and even contributes importantly to revealing the historical (asbabul wurud), epistemological (ulum al-hadis), and interpretive (syarh al-hadis) dimensions. Grammatical interpretation serves to explore ḥadīś textually, psychological interpretation aims to read the context when the ḥadīś appeared, the divination method serves to record the main ideas of the author, the hermeneutic circle is useful to dialogue between text and context until contextualization is born. Thus, Schleiermacher's hermeneutics makes an important contribution to hadith discourse in the modern era, without being uprooted from the roots of classical hadith discourse.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the status of hadiths that serve as the basis for the imposition of sanctions on individuals who convert from Islam to other beliefs (apostasy) and the views of Muslim scholars in understanding the legal messages behind hadiths on apostasy. This study addresses questions regarding the wording, transmission, and status of hadiths on apostasy, as well as how Muslim scholars define apostasy and interpret the legal messages of apostasy sanctions in the hadiths of the Prophet. The study utilizes the method of takhrij hadith with an analytical-descriptive approach. Both primary and secondary research data are gathered from various literary sources. The study finds that hadiths on the legal sanctions for apostasy have two forms of wording: "man baddala dinahu faqtuluhu - whoever changes his religion, kill him" and "la yahilllu damumriin muslimin illa tsalasin - no Muslim's blood is lawful except for three cases." Hadiths on apostasy sanctions fall into the category of ahad hadiths with a degree of authenticity (sahih). Furthermore, the study reveals the evolution of Muslim scholars' understanding of apostasy, wherein apostasy was initially understood solely as a departure from the Islamic faith (i'tiqad) but later came to be seen as a departure accompanied by enmity towards Islam. The scholars themselves are divided into two major groups in their interpretation of the position of hadiths on apostasy, namely the classical Muslim scholars who interpret it as a legal ruling that can be implemented against apostates. In contrast, contemporary Muslim scholars have started to criticize and reinterpret the status of these hadiths, emphasizing the need to reconsider the contextualized understanding of the legal message of apostasy sanctions. The significant contribution of this study lies in clarifying the status of hadiths on apostasy sanctions and illustrating the dynamic understanding of Muslim scholars regarding the implementation of these hadiths' messages

Abstract

This article will discuss the implementation of Semitic Rhetorical Analysis to one of the surah in the Qur'an, namely Surah Al-Ahqaf. In the past scholars have also applied SRA to surah in the Qur'an to show unity and wholeness to the suras, this is done to prove Cuypers' words which say that although SRA is a rhetorical theory used to study the Bible, SRA is also able to prove the integrity of suras in the Qur'an. He stated that after he succeeded in applying the surah Al-Ma'idah and the last 30 suras in the Qur'an, he also claimed that his success in studying these surahs adequately represented that the entire surah in the Qur'an is composed by the principles of the SRA and forms a complete unity of surahs. Nevertheless, this claim must be proven by applying SRA to all surahs in the Qur'an, one of which is to surah Al-Ahqaf whose integrity is disputed by an orientalist named Richard Bell. He argues that the mention of jinn in verse 29 lacks the unity of discussion in surah Al-Ahqaf, it also makes the last few verses seem isolated from the discussion listed at the beginning of the surah. Therefore, the author tries to refute this statement by applying the SRA theory. In this case, a library research study is carried out by referring to books, paper articles related to the discussion. Then analyzed with analytical descriptive methods so that conclusions can be found. This study proves that the integrity of surah Al-Ahqaf can be seen from its arrangement in accordance with the principles of SRA, the arrangement also gives birth to interpretations that are in accordance with the ulama' tafsir.

Abstract

This article analyzes the dialectics of polygamy sharia among classical ulama and the contemporary era. Polygamy in the contemporary era is questioned, even rejected. Because there are currently no widows of war victims, these opinions seem to be against the polygamy verse. The text of the Qur'an in verse 3 of Surah an-Nisak shows the possibility and possibility of polygamy for capable husbands. This paper aims to conduct a Sharia analysis of polygamy in the contemporary era, an analysis of the evolution of Islamic legal views towards the practice of polygamy. This type of study takes literature research using qualitative descriptive methods. Data was collected from various journals, books and related tafsir books. Next, it is analyzed deductively. The result of the study concludes that in terms of text and context, polygamy is not prohibited, nor is it recommended. In addition, the social context of polygamy used to be related to widows of war victims. This does not limit polygamy just because of social conditions. In context, polygamy is a solution to help women, whether they are widows or not. The practice of polygamy in the contemporary era depicts pain and sadness. This shows that polygamy is carried out not based on sharia norms. If polygamy provisions are ignored, it will result in hurt and sadness.

Abstract

The issues of gender and women’s rights have permeated into the Quran.  Some advocates for gender equality argue that the Quran is a source of perpetuating the oppression of women.  This is due to their perception of certain Quranic verses that are claimed to have a gender bias.  However, it is widely understood in the Islamic worldview that the Quran is a sacred book and contains principles of justice for all His creations, regardless of gender.  Therefore, this article aims to examine the wisdom of tasyrī’ in the verses that are alleged to have a gender bias from the perspective of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia’s Tafsir named Al-Qur’an dan Tafsirnya; Edisi yang Disempurnakan.  The focus will be on four main topics: polygamy, interfaith marriage, inheritance distribution, and the testimony of women.  This work is a literature review that explores the explanation of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia.  This research demonstrates that the interpretation provided by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia contains logical and argumentative explanations regarding the wisdom of tasyrī’ from the verses related to the four gender-biased topics claimed.  Various tasyrī’ wisdoms further confirm that there is a benefit for both Muslim men and women behind the establishment of these four sharia rules.  Therefore, the claims made by feminist followers that these verses discredit and degrade the dignity of women are not accurate.

Abstract

The relationship between Islam and the Bugis society is strongly intertwined through traditions that last for generations. One such tradition is makkatte’ or female circumcision “patuk ayam” performed by the Bugis community in Jayapura. This tradition is interpreted as a religious commandment derived from the hadits. This article examines this tradition and its motives from a living hadits perspective to find a correlation between local wisdom and Islamic values. The research employs a descriptive-qualitative method, drawing data from documentation, observation, and interviews within a phenomenological framework. Utilizing Alfred Schutz’s concept of motive in phenomenology, data is categorized based on in-order-to motives and because-of motives. Through verification and substantiation, the results show that the practice of hadits is not only in the practice of circumcision but also combined with the traditional ceremony of validating the Muslim status of a daughter. The symbols of the tradition, including the procession, props, and the clothes to be worn, show the hopes of the parents that their daughters will be religiously observant, avoid misfortune, be hardworking, independent, and easily find a mate. This futuristic expectation is considered to be in line with the values contained in the Prophetic traditions.
