Abstract

This study examines Tari Perang Centong in the Kampung Adat Jalawastu community, Brebes, specifically its role during the Tradisi Ngasa ceremony. Beyond performance, the dance acts as a cultural representation of community ideology. This study aims to analyze the symbols in Tari Perang Centong and their role in preserving ancestral culture. Employing a qualitative ethnographic approach, the research utilized participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation to collect data. Applying Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory, the findings reveal that the dance’s choreographic symbols manifest the community’s local life, belief systems, and cultural identity. Tari Perang Centong serves as a vital medium for transmitting cultural values across generations, thereby strengthening communal identity and preserving ancestral traditions. Ultimately, this research contributes to the academic study of performing arts and provides a strategic reference for cultural preservation efforts.

Abstract

This study analyzes tensions between indigenous cosmology and Indonesian nationalism in the Monumen Perjuangan Rakyat Bali as an expression of Hindu Balinese spatial logic responding to modern nation-building. A qualitative interpretive approach employs semi-structured interviews with architects and historians, along with systematic document analysis. Lefebvre’s spatial triad and Bhabha’s hybridity frame the analysis. Findings show the monument as a sedimented temporal space where mythological and historical narratives coexist without final synthesis. Use of the Samudramanthana epic in nationalist pedagogy produces cultural differentiation rather than a unified identity. Popular adoption of the vernacular name Bajra Sandhi reflects a form of semantic reappropriation privileging religious over nationalist identification. Construction across three gubernatorial administrations indicates ongoing hegemonic negotiation. The study concludes that postcolonial monuments operate as agonistic spaces enabling contestation of meaning while advancing understanding of spatial politics where local cosmology intersects with state projects.

Abstract

Theatre develops through shifting relations among body, space, and technology. Digital mediation does not merely introduce new aesthetic instruments but reconfigures dramaturgical structures and modes of knowledge production. Dramaturgy, therefore, must be understood as an epistemic practice organizing interactions among body, media, and spectatorship rather than as textual composition alone. This article reads the technologization of theatre as a shift from representation toward performativity and interactivity. The encounter between traditional and contemporary practices reveals technology as a negotiated field: disruptive within certain value systems yet generative of new aesthetic and conceptual possibilities. Through dramaturgical analysis, three interrelated configurations are identified—mimetic, epicising, and interactive—through which technologization operates as an epistemic condition. Theatre thus appears not only as artistic production but as practice-as-research, where knowledge emerges through performative processes.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the development of Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC) research in art and design from 2020 to 2024 using bibliometric methods. Addressing the limited systematic mapping of this field, it examines publication trends, dominant keywords, major institutions, and research clusters. A total of 341 Scopus-indexed articles were screened using PRISMA guidelines and analyzed with VOSviewer. Results reveal rapid growth after 2021, led by China, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Four main clusters emerged: AI technical foundations, creative applications, human–AI interaction, and computer vision. Hasselt University and the University of Antwerp were among the leading contributors. This study provides a structured overview of AIGC in creative fields and highlights computer-aided design and product design as promising directions for future research.

Abstract

Indonesia’s cultural diversity has produced a wide range of traditional craft techniques, including batik, weaving, embroidery, surface treatments, and natural dyeing, which carry strong aesthetic and cultural values. In contemporary fashion, these techniques are not preserved as static forms but undergo visual transformation to remain relevant to current design contexts and the evolving dynamics of the global fashion industry. This study examines the integration of traditional craft techniques in Indonesian contemporary fashion through an aesthetic morphology approach. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this study conducted a visual content analysis of visual content analysis was conducted on 100 fashion works by five Indonesian designers produced between 2021 and 2024. Thomas Munro’s aesthetic morphology framework was employed to analyze transformations in motifs, scale, surface quality, garment structure, as well as visual organisationorganization, and visual hierarchy. The study concludes that aesthetic morphology provides an effective analytical framework for understanding the visual transformation of traditional crafts and their role in cultural sustainability within contemporary fashion design. These findings demonstrate that adaptive visual strategies enable traditional crafts to function sustainably within evolving global fashion contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the film Komang (2025) by Naya Anindita as a social communication medium that reflects the reality of marginalized communities in Indonesia. The film Komang by director Naya Anindita is an adaptation of the true story of the love journey of Raim Laode and his wife, Komang Ade Widiandari. This film raises the theme of love across cultures and religions in Indonesia, with the background of Buton Island and Bali. The research method used is a qualitative approach with Roland Barthes' visual semiotic analysis. The results show that the film Komang contains a strong social message related to structural inequality, power relations, and the position of women in society. This film also builds a space for public discussion and acts as a social advocacy medium. Thus, the film is proven to have the potential as an effective social communication tool in contemporary Indonesian cinematic discourse.

Abstract

This article analyzes in depth how nonverbal communication elements function as a system of signs and symbols to convey meaning, emotion, and narrative in contemporary physical theater performances. By highlighting gestures, mimics, body postures, proxemics (the use of personal space), and the use of stage space, this research explores the crucial role of the body in creating a rich artistic language, often without or with minimal verbal dialogue. Through a qualitative literature review informed by Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic approach, this article examines Saussure's theoretical framework, particularly the concepts of the signifier and the signified, the arbitrary and conventional nature of signs, and their application in the critique of physical theater performances. This methodology allows for the dismantling of the complex signifying system in the performance, where every movement and expression is part of a larger system of meaning. The results show that non-verbal communication in physical theater is a complex and integrated semiotic system that allows the audience to interpret layers of meaning through the interaction of visual and spatial signs, grounded in the dynamic relationship between signifier and signified. This research contributes to a richer understanding of the expressive power of physical theater and the potential of Saussure's semiotics in analyzing the depth of non-verbal communication in contemporary performance art.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of arts and culture in strengthening cultural tourism attractions in Kertawangi Tourism Village, West Bandung Regency, within the framework of sustainable tourism development based on the 3A concept (attractions, accessibility, and amenities). Although the village has strong cultural potential, the management of attractions is still not optimally integrated in the tourism system. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data was collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with key informants, and documentation studies, and analyzed using triangulation techniques. The results of the study show that cultural arts attractions such as Wayang Golek, Calung, and Jaipongan Dance have not been managed systematically, characterized by sporadic performances and minimal integration in tour packages. The implementation of the "Kertawangi Ngaraga Budaya: Sajian Kolaboratif Seni Tradisi" program has proven to improve the quality of attractions through a collaborative and participatory approach, producing impacts on cultural revitalization, community economic improvement, and enhancement of destination competitiveness and quality. This study concludes that the pentahelix collaborative model is an effective strategic framework in developing community-based cultural tourism attractions in a sustainable manner.

Abstract

This study investigates how design ethnography can be used to develop batik motifs as a visual identity for a tourism village. The research was conducted in Ketapanrame village, East Java, using a qualitative ethnographic approach combined with design thinking. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation across five iterative development cycles from 2019 to 2022, with follow-up observations until 2025. The study demonstrates how ethnographic insights into daily practices, coffee culture, village landscapes, and clothing habits were systematically translated into visual design through mood boards, prototyping, product-use evaluation, reflection, and iterative adaptation. The findings reveal that batik motifs function not only as visual products but also as cultural artifacts embedded in social practices, as reflected in their adoption in village uniforms, udeng, sarongs, home décor, and tableware. This study contributes by proposing a model of artwork creation that translates ethnographic data into design outcomes through an iterative design thinking process, highlighting how visual identity is formed through social adoption rather than purely aesthetic considerations.

Abstract

This study examines the role of the topeng (mask) puppeteer in the Ngarot traditional ceremony in Lelea, Indramayu, as a representation of local history and cultural identity of the coastal Javanese community. The Ngarot tradition, rooted in agrarian history, is combined with mask performance, creating a space of expression that reflects social, religious, and historical values. The topeng puppeteer functions not only as a performer but also as a guardian of historical narratives transmitted orally through symbols, movements, and performance dialogues. Using an ethnographic approach, this research explores the dynamics of the puppeteer’s role and the meanings constructed within the ceremonial context. The findings show that the topeng puppeteer acts as a cultural agent who affirms collective identity while strengthening the educational function of history through performing arts. Thus, Ngarot and Indramayu mask traditions can be understood as living cultural heritage that remains relevant to community life.
