Abstract

This study explores the implementation of anti-corruption education in traditional Islamic boarding schools (dayah) in Aceh, Indonesia. Grounded in qualitative research design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and document analysis at selected dayahs. The findings reveal that anti-corruption values are not taught as isolated subjects but are embedded holistically in religious instruction, institutional policies, daily routines, and the moral example of teachers (teungku). The integration of classical Islamic texts—such as fiqh, aqidah, and akhlaq—with ethical conduct fosters an environment where values like honesty, responsibility, and justice are lived and reinforced through practice. Institutional leadership plays a key role in maintaining consistency between curriculum and conduct, while student organizations support peer-led accountability. This educational model represents a distinctive bottom-up approach rooted in religious and communal traditions, contributing to character formation and civic responsibility. Moreover, the Acehnese dayah model offers globally relevant insights for anti-corruption strategies by highlighting the role of culturally embedded, faith-based institutions in shaping ethical behavior. The study suggests that integrating spiritual, moral, and civic education through trusted local institutions may provide effective alternatives to formal, legalistic anti-corruption initiatives, especially in plural societies and post-conflict regions.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of open-ended and guided inquiry-based learning modules in enhancing Science Process Skills (SPS) among pre-service science teachers in Indonesia. The study responds to the limited research on SPS development under the implementation of the Independent Curriculum. A quasi-experimental non-equivalent pretest-posttest control group design was employed involving 204 pre-service teachers enrolled in Environmental Education courses, distributed across open-ended inquiry, guided inquiry, and conventional learning groups. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and factorial MANOVA (3×2), considering gender and study program (Biology and Physics) as moderating variables. The results reveal statistically significant improvements in SPS for both inquiry-based groups compared to the conventional group (p < 0.001). Gender-based differences were also observed: female participants outperformed males in the guided inquiry group, while males performed better in the open-ended group. In addition, no significant differences were found between study programs. The findings underscore the potential of inquiry-based learning modules to foster key scientific competencies and suggest that gender-responsive strategies may further optimize SPS outcomes. This study contributes to international discussions on competency-based science teacher education and offers practical insights for curriculum design in national and global contexts.

Abstract

The issue of zakat fatwa implementation faces challenges in ensuring sharia compliance and effective governance. This study examines zakat fatwa implementation in three institutions: Muhammadiyah Amil Zakat Institute (LAZISMU), Nahdlatul Ulama Amil Zakat Institute (LAZISNU), and the Islamic Dakwah Fund (IDF) of the Council of Indonesian Ulama (MUI). Using a mixed-methods approach with a sequential explanatory design, the research explores the application of zakat fatwas issued by Muhammadiyah, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), and MUI, their impact on institutional compliance, and the opportunities and challenges involved. Quantitative data from 40 zakat administrators (amil) and qualitative insights from eight key informants were analyzed using regression models, the Public Satisfaction Index (IKM), and thematic qualitative techniques. Results indicate zakat fatwa implementation is “suboptimal”, with an Amil Satisfaction Index of 74.60. Opportunities include digitalization, institutional collaboration, and standardized management, while challenges involve limited skilled human resources, insufficient professional certification, and inadequate fatwa dissemination. The study underscores the need for improved fatwa dissemination, systematic SOP evaluations, and enhanced amil professionalism. These findings contribute to the global discourse on zakat governance by offering insights from Indonesia’s multi-fatwa system, which has implications for similar institutions worldwide. Abstract

Land degradation has emerged as a critical global issue, with significant implications for food security, agricultural productivity, and environmental sustainability. In Indonesia, this problem is deeply intertwined with land politics, where land ownership and access inequities exacerbate the challenges posed by soil erosion, unsustainable agricultural practices, and socio-economic transitions. This study examines the relationship between land degradation and food security, focusing on how agrarian politics influence these dynamics. Through a qualitative approach systematic literature review, we analyzed articles from the Scopus database using VOSviewer to identify critical patterns and themes. The findings highlight that dryland farming areas in Indonesia are particularly vulnerable, with land degradation being aggravated by urbanization, economic pressures, and socio-political factors such as unequal land ownership and inadequate policy implementation. While agrarian reform initiatives have been proposed to address disparities in land access and improve resource distribution, their effectiveness remains limited due to insufficient community involvement and a lack of integration between local socio-ecological knowledge and policy frameworks. This research underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to land management that integrates equitable land policies, community participation, and sustainable agricultural practices. By addressing the socio-political dimensions of land use and degradation, Indonesia can enhance food security and create a more resilient agricultural sector.

Abstract

This study looked into what factors help predict the performance of Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd) graduates in the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET). It used a descriptive-correlational and longitudinal research design, applying path analysis to examine how high school grades, university admission test scores, college qualifying exam results, and interview scores affect LET results. Data from 186 graduates were used. The findings showed that high school grades and college qualifying exam scores had a strong and positive effect on LET performance. On the other hand, admission test and interview scores did not have a direct impact. A revised model based on the results showed a good fit and can help improve how students are selected and supported in teacher education programs. The findings emphasize the importance of aligning admission policies with academic competencies and offer a model that can be adapted to improve teacher education practices and licensure outcomes in both national and international contexts.

Abstract

Critical thinking is a vital 21st-century graduate attribute that significantly enhances employability and adaptability. This study investigated the effectiveness of experiential learning in fostering students’ critical thinking skills within the context of Indonesian higher education. Using a quantitative pretest-posttest design, data were collected from 117 university students enrolled in a science course at Universitas Riau. A structured questionnaire assessing five levels of critical thinking was used to measure students’ skills before and after the intervention. The findings revealed a statistically significant improvement in students’ critical thinking after the intervention (p < .001), with an average increase of 6.78 points and a 13.9% gain. Cohen’s d value of 0.84 indicated a large effect size. Post-intervention results showed a substantial shift in the distribution of critical thinking levels, with more students reaching the ‘superior’ and ‘exceptional’ categories. These results underscored the value of active, reflective, and real-world learning experiences in enhancing students’ cognitive skills. This study contributes to the growing body of evidence on pedagogical innovations in science education and offers practical implications for curriculum reform in developing countries.

Abstract

The study of Islamic educational history, vital for intellectual society’s development, is often reduced to rote memorization, placing a cognitive burden on students and diminishing its contemporary relevance. This qualitative case study explored the potential of the Nearpod application to promote creative and active learning of Islamic educational history among Malaysian trainee teachers. Thematic analysis of reflections from 93 first-year trainee teachers revealed four key findings: Nearpod enhanced concentration and comprehension through engaging and interactive experiences; fostered a deeper emotional connection to Islamic history, making learning more meaningful; inspired trainee teachers to develop innovative approaches for teaching Islamic history; and presented challenges due to internet connectivity issues. Nearpod’s multimedia features - audio, video, and interactive questions—created an immersive learning environment, significantly improving understanding, motivation, and enthusiasm for continuous learning. Despite technological challenges, the integration of Nearpod transformed the teaching of Islamic history, addressing the urgent need for engaging and relevant pedagogical methods. These findings highlighted the potential of Nearpod to make Islamic educational history more accessible and impactful. The study’s results carried significant implications for teacher training programs and Islamic education, suggesting that technology-driven approaches could modernize traditional subjects effectively.

Abstract

This study examined the predictive influence of spirituality and physical health on depression, anxiety, and stress among undergraduate students during their first full return to face-to-face learning after the COVID-19 pandemic. Anchored on the Biopsychosocial Model, SPIRE Model, and Health Hexagonal Model, a complex correlational design was employed using multiple linear regression analysis. Data were collected from 1,760 freshmen and sophomore students enrolled in 24 academic programs at a state university in the Philippines. Three validated instruments—the DASS-21, the Spirituality Scale, and the Physical Health Questionnaire—were administered. Findings revealed that spirituality, particularly the dimension of self-discovery, was a significant protective factor against depression, anxiety, and stress. In contrast, physical health concerns such as sleep disturbances, gastrointestinal problems, and respiratory infections were substantial risk factors across all three psychological outcomes. These results affirm the multifaceted nature of mental wellness and highlight the importance of integrating spiritual and physical dimensions in designing context-sensitive mental health interventions for higher education. The study contributes novel insights from the Philippine context to the growing global discourse on student mental health and underscores the value of holistic, culturally grounded approaches in supporting psychological well-being in post-pandemic academic transitions.

Abstract

This article examines the constitutional legitimacy and practical implications of Wasatiyyah da’wah—an Islamic propagation model rooted in the principle of moderation—in Malaysia’s plural legal and religious context. While the Federal Constitution recognizes Islam as the religion of the Federation (Article 3(1)), it also guarantees religious freedom (Article 11), creating a legal space that necessitates careful interpretation and application. This study uses a normative legal methodology to analyze constitutional texts, statutory instruments, and judicial decisions through systematic, teleological, and contextual interpretations. The findings indicate that Wasatiyyah da’wah may function as a constitutionally compatible approach to Islamic propagation, provided it avoids coercion and adheres to legal safeguards. However, tensions arise in its implementation, especially when state-sponsored religious programs intersect with public welfare, education, and minority rights. The institutionalization of Wasatiyyah must be accompanied by transparent regulation, independent oversight, and alignment with human rights principles. By treating Wasatiyyah not merely as a theological ideal but as a constitutional strategy, the study contributes to constitutional Islamic studies and offers insights into reconciling Islamic identity with democratic pluralism. The research also opens avenues for comparative studies in other Muslim-majority societies facing similar legal and social challenges.

Abstract

Zakat compliance among Indonesian Muslims remains relatively low despite its mandatory under Islamic law and regional regulations. This study investigates the factors influencing zakat compliance in Aceh Province, Indonesia, by examining the roles of accountability, financial report transparency, institutional credibility, religiosity, and zakat literacy. It also explores the mediating role of muzakki’s interest in enhancing compliance through formal Zakat Institutions, specifically Baitul Mal. Data were collected from 500 muzakki across 23 regencies/ cities using online and on-site surveys. Employing Structural Equation Modeling and Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS), the results reveal that accountability and transparency significantly affect muzakki’s interest, influencing zakat compliance. Moreover, accountability, transparency, religiosity, and muzakki’s interest directly affect compliance, while institutional credibility and zakat literacy show limited impact. This study offers practical implications for strengthening local zakat management systems. It contributes to the broader discourse in Islamic social finance by providing an empirical model applicable to other Muslim-majority contexts to improve formal zakat governance and behavioral compliance.
