Abstract

This study aimed to develop learners' critical thinking abilities through concentrated application in related learning activities. A quasi-experimental design of the Pretest-Posttest Non-Equivalent Control Group type was employed. The study was done between January and February 2023 with a sample of 60 junior high school students in grade VII, divided evenly into an experimental group and a control group, each with 30 participants, focused on the solar system. The experimental group utilized problem based learning (PBL) e-modules, while the control group followed conventional teaching methods. The instrument used in this study included a critical thinking variable with four components in the form of a multiple-choice exam with a reliability value of 0.183, allowing it to evaluate students' critical thinking skills. The data were collected during the pretest and after treatments by administering the posttest. After the SPSS analysis, the data was shown descriptively and inferentially. The results revealed a notable difference in critical thinking capabilities between students involved in PBL-based e-modules and those taught using conventional approaches (P < 0.01). Therefore, the study shows that including PBL-based e-modules into the curriculum could improve students' critical thinking ability quite successfully.

Abstract

Students' scientific literacy in understanding physics concepts still needs to improve. This study aims to determine scientific literacy using STEM Project-based Learning (PjBL) in learning physics, especially measurement concepts. The study used the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method with the Kemmis and McTaggart model, including planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subjects were students in the tenth grade of SMA Negeri 8 Yogyakarta for the 2023/2024 academic year, consisting of 33 students. The data collection techniques and instruments used a written test with three questions describing scientific literacy, observation, and documentation. STEM-PjBL through project activities carried out in two learning cycles. In the first cycle, the teacher implemented a project for making posters regarding measuring instrument specifications, while in the second cycle, there was a project for making miniature measuring instruments. After the first cycle, students' scientific literacy increased to 0.48 with a moderate category. In the second cycle, it increased to 0.68. Using STEM-PjBL is thought to have just a modest improvement. These results underline the potential of STEM-PjBL as a fundamental teaching tool to improve students' scientific literacy as they show how well it fosters a strong awareness of physics ideas. Future studies could examine the effects of STEM-PjBL on more scientific ideas or within varied educational environments.

Abstract

This research aims to develop a prototype of the P-PAM (Physics Practicum Apparatus based on Microcontroller), specifically designed to address misconceptions in basic kinematics. The method employed for the prototype development follows the ADPT model (Analysis, Design, Prototyping, and Testing). The misconceptions identified during the analysis process include: (1) If the object's position is in the positive coordinate, it indicates that the object is moving forward; (2) The acceleration of an object is proportional to its instantaneous velocity. The practicum apparatus designed to address Misconception 1 is intended to measure the distance of an object, with data processed using Arduino Uno and transmitted to a PC via Bluetooth. The distance data is then processed using Python to generate information regarding distance, velocity, and acceleration, which are displayed in graphs over time. The apparatus for addressing Misconception 2 presents initial and final velocity data, as well as the acceleration of an object rolling past two sensors. The prototype of the first practicum apparatus can generate real-time graphs of position versus time and speed versus time. The second apparatus prototype provides initial velocity, final velocity, and acceleration data. Additionally, the device can demonstrate uniform acceleration for different initial speeds, as the incline is kept constant. There are 7 out of 10 acceleration data that fall within the confidence interval  at the 96% confidence level. The prototype we created can present scientific facts from two misconceptions in basic kinematics material, in addition, our prototype can be used in learning that focuses on conceptual change.

Abstract

This research examines the development of physics learning media with a multi-representation approach through a systematic literature review. The research method follows the PRISMA stages with data sources from Google Scholar, including articles published between 2015-2023, which SINTA/Scopus index. Of the initial 769 titles, 30 articles were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results show the dominance of development research focused on high school students and validated by experts. Modules are the most frequently used media. A spike in publications occurred in 2020, possibly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which encouraged innovation in distance learning. Research finds that interactive media encourages active student involvement more effectively in increasing understanding of complex physics concepts. The multiple representation approach is proven to improve students' understanding, because it allows them to access information through multiple representations. Further research is needed on a variety of physics topics and involving more diverse samples and the use of new technologies. This article provides practical recommendations for developers and educators to discover trends, challenges, and opportunities in the further development of multi-representation-based physics learning media.

Abstract

In a 2020/21 course and 2021/22 course, diverse pedadogic resources were applied. Learning-teaching styles usually are considered as a personal feature inherently linked to the teacher. For the presented courses, along the pandemic, not only did we use media resources to solve the issues and limitations for the learning-teaching process in higher education, but we also used an open field of teaching styles, displaying an ecologic style to increase inclusion, NdS, gender disparity, and, overally, reducing the limitations and possible negative impact due to cognitive, social, and basic human needs disparities, as well as starting level differences. The results can be seen in Bache, 2022a; Bache & Ries, 2021a; Bache et al., 2022). Hereby we present the ecologic approach as a way to inclusion and transcend the concept of teaching style to individualization and diversity inclusion (from teaching style as a feature to teaching styles as pedagogic resources) and the complex structres that emerged from the application of pedagogic resources, mostly regarding and linked to SDT and media, through PBL, PALS and Digital/Media resources.
