Abstract

The purpose of this study was to discuss the scaffolding techniques used in the Jenius Writing (JW) program to support students’ creative writing. The Jenius Writing 58 (JW 58) class was studied using a qualitative case study method. The data were gathered through documentation from posts on the JW 58 WhatsApp Group and Gen JW International’s Facebook page. Data analysis was performed using Miles and Huberman’s data analysis technique, which included data reduction, data visualization, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal four distinct types of creative writing scaffolding techniques: (1) writing inconsequentially, directly, or as things; (2) utilizing a hypnotic pattern or employing wording and phrases that can influence the development of writing; (3) employing a paragraph pattern to build writing, specifically writing based on the structure of words or phrases that focus on a single concept; and (4) using questions to develop a piece of writing.

Abstract

This study aimed to measure the effectiveness of interactive multimedia aided social cognitive model in early reading learning, implemented to improve students’ early reading skills. The model was implemented to 195 first- and second-graders in an elementary school in Bandung. Descriptive statistics analysis was conducted to measure the difference in students’ ability before and after the treatment, based on the result of pre- and post-test using EGRA instrument. Results of this study indicated that social cognitive learning could be combined with interactive multimedia to effectively improve students’ early reading ability. However, further study is required to understand why the model contributed lower significance towards improvement of word-reading skill than towards improvement of other aspects of early reading skills.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to see how polite netizens are in commenting on Nadiem Makarim's Instagram account, Minister of Education and Culture. This type of research is a qualitative research with descriptive method. The data is sourced from the Instagram account (@nadiemmakariem), speech or writing in the comments of Nadiem Makarim's first post on August 17, 2020, the focus of the data is comments about online learning. The results showed that comments about online learning on Nadiem Makarim's posts were dominated by netizens who used polite speech or obeyed the principles of politeness. Comments that are found a lot are comments from school children and students for schools to be reactivated or they want schools to be opened and face to face. This is certainly a spirit that appears from the students and a positive thing. Complying with the netizen's politeness principle in commenting on Nadiem Makarim's Instagram account, there are 85 utterances or comments. Meanwhile, there are 54 violations of the netizen's politeness principles.

Abstract

In this era, English plays an important role in opening access to education and career. Regarding the significance, universities in Indonesia not only include English subjects in the curriculum, but they also use the English media for other subjects such as books, presentation slides, and video.  This application has been a complaint from students, especially the first-year students who are used to using Indonesian media. Therefore, this study aims to see first-year students’ readiness in using English media for the learning process. This study adopts a mixed-method approach using questionnaires and interviews. The result shows the students feel that they have good English skills, but the learning process using English media has not been optimized. Furthermore, this condition has affected the learning process.

Abstract

Ternate Malay Language Interference in the Indonesian Language Learning Process. This research was conducted with the aim of explaining the interference of the Ternate Malay language in the Indonesian language learning process for the eighth-grade students of Banau National Junior High School, Ternate, and describing the factors that cause interference in the learning process of Ternate Malay for eighth-grade students of Banau National Junior High School, Ternate. This study used the descriptive qualitative method. The data used are primary data and secondary data. The data sources were 28 students who spoke Ternate Malay. Data collection techniques, namely: observation, interviews, documentation, and speaking. The data analysis technique uses descriptive qualitative which includes the process of data reduction, data presentation, summarizing, and verification. The results of the data analysis concluded that the form of interference in the Ternate Malay language in the Indonesian language learning process, namely: (1) interference in the form of words, sentences, phrases, and clauses and (2) the factors causing interference in the Indonesian language learning process was caused by: habit, influence opponents of speech, students are more comfortable using Ternate Malay, have not realized or used to use Indonesian in the learning process.

Abstract

This study describes and compares euphemisms in Indonesian and Mandarin. The research is qualitative and applies a contrastive approach. Data was collected by listening and taking notes and the analysis was conducted by comparative-contrastive description. The results show that there are fourteen realms in comparing Indonesian and Mandarin euphemisms. Further, euphemisms manifest themselves in words, terms, phrases and clauses in these two languages. Euphemisms are used to add politeness and promote harmony in communication – perks of using euphemisms include conflict-mitigation and corroboration of one’s cultural identity. Understanding euphemisms helps foreign students speak better Indonesian in keeping with their own cultural framework.

Abstract

The gender role of a person, whether male or female, depends on the cultural values that develop in the classroom. In the patriarchal class, from the start the gender roles of male students were more dominant than girls, so there was a comparison of gender roles and in turn, men were considered more powerful than women in the class. However, poststructuralism discourse analysis views men's and women's rights equally. This paper reveals that there are differences between male and female students, as seen from the results of the analysis during class discussions. Poststructuralism discourse analysis provides equal rights and research is carried out naturally, without favoritism in learning. The teacher allows the discussion to take place so that it is clear that there is no teacher domination of male and female students.

Abstract

Abstract:  Laku in Attaining Perfection of Life According to Javanese Manuscript “Ngelmi Pangrucat”. Life tranquility is something which is always wanted by everyone. The last purpose of tranquil life achievement is to reach the perfection of life in this world and hereafter. However, not everyone is aware of behaving well to attain the life tranquility. Regarding to this, the role of ancestors’ writings in the form of Javanese manuscript is very important to deepen human understanding in achieving the perfection of life in which the contents contained remain relevant to be used as life guidance. How is laku? This article explains about manners (laku) to reach life perfection based on Javanese manuscript entitled Ngelmi Pangrucat. This study employed descriptive method by using modern philology theory approach. The result of the study is the text on Ngelmi Pangrucat manuscript with latin characters which are correct. Additionally, sentences were found containing the steps of Ngelmi Pangrucat in the form of laku in order to attain the tranquility and perfection of life on earth and hereafter.

Abstract

This research examines the using metaphors in the commentary column on Instagram social media accounts @serambinews and @haba_acehbarat. The chosen topic of metaphors due to the majority of hate speech on social media has found metaphor. As a result, victims feel aggrieved by posting social media reports to the police to be proven in court. The data collected is comments of the Instagram user in January-April 2021. From 1,750 commentary has observed are 107 metaphors consist of 51 structural metaphors, 27 orientational metaphors, and 29 ontological metaphors. The structural metaphors found in this study mostly use the term animal as a metaphorical element is almost the same as the ontological metaphor uses abstract terms to become concrete. Besides that, the orientational metaphors used for related to spatial orientation. Regards the potential for hate speech of the 1,750 comments has observed, 27 comments had the potential to be hate speech. The hate speech found in Instagram comments is defamation, insult, and provocation.

Abstract

The research discusses the revitalization of Javanese in a school environment from a landscape linguistic perspective. This research is conducted based on the phenomenon that in the era of 4.0 Javanese mastery of the younger generation is inadequate. The data of this research are Javanese texts on public space media placed in the Special Region of Yogyakarta school environment. The research method is carried out by observing, photographing data, classifying data, and analyzing data. The research aims to describe the revitalization of the Javanese in public space media in the school environment from the aspects of language situations, language codes, Javanese writing order, written form, form, function, and local wisdom values. The results show that the revitalization of the Javanese language based on situation aspects and language codes are divided into three types, namely  monolingual (Javanese), bilingual (Javanese and Indonesian), and multilingual (Javanese, Indonesian, English, and Arabic). Based on the order of writing, Javanese is placed in the order of  first,  second,  third,  fourth, and  only Javanese. Based on the form of writing, Javanese is categorized into three types, namely Javanese, Latin character, and a combination of Javanese and Latin. Based on the form realization, Javanese is classified into eight types, namely room names,  expressions, phatic expressions,  proverbs,  philosophies, appeals, prose, and  slogans. Based on the function, Javanese is categorized into four types, namely information, advice, appeal, and  greeting. Based on the values of local wisdom, Javanese contains teachings about  ethics and morals, philosophy of life, religion, preserving the environment,  maintaining health, tolerance, work ethic, cooperation, and preserving Javanese script.
