Abstract

This research aims to describe students' representational translation errors in solving numeracy problems. A qualitative method was employed in this study. The research subjects consisted of 24 elementary school students from a school in Malang Regency. The instruments used included tests, observation sheets, recording equipment, and field notes. The research process involved recording students' answers, identifying students who completed their work correctly but could not explain their answers, and categorizing students who made errors based on the type of error. The findings indicate that students experience translation errors in language representations, symbols, pictures, and analogies. The study recommends that teachers implement targeted learning interventions to support students who continue to make such errors.

Abstract

Teachers must be capable of shaping individuals who can adapt to computational thinking skills. Learning styles impact students' performance and learning outcomes. This study examine the computational thinking abilities of prospective mathematics teachers from the perspective of visual, auditory, kinesthetic learning styles. A qualitative approach was used in this study, specifically a case study research design. The subjects of this study were first-semester students in the Mathematics Education program enrolled in the Basic Mathematics course. Research instruments: written tests, learning style questionnaires, interviews. The test questions were validated by three mathematics education experts and piloted with four students. Based on the research findings, it was concluded that learning style influenced students' computational thinking skills. Kinesthetic students demonstrated proficiency across all indicators of computational thinking ability. Visual and auditory students struggled with algorithmic thinking and pattern recognition. However, visual and auditory students, like kinesthetic students, performed well in abstraction and decomposition.

Abstract

Vertex coloring of a graph is the coloring of vertices such that two adjacent vertices have different colors. The color code of a vertex is the distance from the vertex to the partition of the existing color set. A graph has a locating coloring if each vertex has a different color code. A palm graph is a graph constructed from a cycle graph, path graph, and star graph. A disjoint union of palm graphs is a disconnected graph with palm graphs as its components. The locating chromatic number of graph is the minimum colors of the graph to have locating coloring with k colors. In this paper, we determine the locating chromatic number of a disjoint union of palm graph.

Abstract

This study aims to describe female students' conjecture construction on the topic of linear equation graphs with the assistance of GeoGebra. The study involved two female students who had mastered the necessary prerequisite material. Research instruments included conjecture construction tests and interviews, which were analyzed based on these conjecture construction indicators: 1) problem identification and exploration, 2) formulating conjectures, 3) testing and refining conjectures, and 4) proving conjectures. Results showed that, in the problem identification and exploration stage, students identified what was asked in the question, determined the information needed to answer it, and explored examples using GeoGebra. One student independently identified a pattern, while the other required an explanation. In the conjecture formulation stage, both students needed guidance to construct a general conjecture. Both students tested their conjectures, though only one needed to refine it. Initially, proof was conducted through examples; ultimately, both students succeeded in generalizing their proofs.

Abstract

Integrating mathematics with other fields is necessary for students to tackle real-world problems. Incorporating technology and engineering, such as robotic activities, into science and mathematics teaching offers the potential to improve learning outcomes and enhance students’ 4C (Critical Thinking, Creativity, Collaboration, and Communication) skills. This study aims to design and develop a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) teaching module supported by the robotics activity Drive Up a Slope for middle school students and evaluate its feasibility and practicality in enhancing students' 4C skills. The development process of the teaching module follows the ADDIE model (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate). The results of this development indicate that the quality of the teaching module is categorized as highly valid, with a validity percentage of 94.64%, and highly practical, with a practicality percentage of 90%. Therefore, it can be concluded that the developed teaching module is both valid and practical.

Abstract

Problem-solving ability is one of the primary goals in mathematics education. One approach that can optimize problem-solving skills is the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) approach, supported by the Alef Education platform as a learning medium for mathematics. This study aims to examine the effect of the STEM learning approach assisted by the Alef platform on students' problem-solving skills at the junior high school (MTs) level. The research employs a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design, specifically the nonequivalent control group design, to enhance students' mathematical problem-solving abilities. The subjects of this study were seventh-grade students of MTs YPRA Batang Kuis. The instrument used to collect data was a mathematical problem-solving skills test. The results of the study indicate that the STEM learning approach assisted by the Alef platform significantly improves students' mathematical problem-solving skills compared to conventional learning methods.

Abstract

This study adopts a qualitative approach with a descriptive research design. The subjects of this study consist of six students from class X of a high school during the second semester of the 2023/2024 school year. The data analysis process includes three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The validity of the findings was ensured through triangulation, which involved comparing data from students' work, interview results, and observation results. The findings revealed that students exhibited seven types of misconceptions leading to errors in simplifying algebraic expressions: (1)  conjunction error, (2) exponent error, (3) reversal error, (4) difficulties with variables, (5) substitution error, (6) equation formation errors, and (7) a commutative-like terms error. These misconceptions were attributed to inappropriate assimilation and a lack of accommodation.

Abstract
