Abstract

Abstract. Higher order thinking skill (HOTS) is the demanded skill in 21st century that one needs to possess in order to be able to compete in the advanced era. The aim of this case study is to investigate the teachers’ beliefs in HOTS integration in the teaching of reading comprehension as well as how the beliefs are applied in the practices of teaching reading by doing a qualitative study in a case-study design. A semi-structured interview and classroom observations were used to obtain the data. The results indicated that the teachers shared strong beliefs about the concept of HOTS and its components. The concept includes how they defined HOTS. In addition, the components revealed how they comprehend analyzing (C4), evaluating (C5), and creating (C6). Practically, the teachers' beliefs were not fully reflected, particularly in the question and assignment they assigned to students that indicated LOTS. This ivestigation suggests that more teachers’ professional development is required to promote the success of HOTS incorporation into teaching reading comprehension, mainly during online learning due to pandemic. Keywords: Higher Order Thinking Skill, HOTS, Reading Comprehension, Teachers’ Beliefs,   integration

Abstract

Abstract. Age and the choice of language learning strategies (LLS) have similarities with the relationship between the aspects of individual differences, social factor, and the LLS itself. This study aimed to investigate whether and how the learners’ starting age in second language learning affects their choice of LLS. 94 ESL learners of two age-based groups were involved in this study. A translated version of the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) version 7.0 proposed by Oxford and an interview guideline were used in data collection. Such version covers 50 statements designed for the learners of English as a second and foreign language. The SILL identified the learners’ strategy by asking them to give a response to a series of strategy statements. The data were then analyzed through inferential statistics. The results of the study revealed that learners’ starting age in second language learning affects their choice of LLS due to their different goals in learning English. The early-starting learners generally learn English to communicate properly while the late-starting learners do the same for specific purposes, such as for working and for studying abroad. Keywords: Starting Age, Language Learning Strategies, Second Language Acquisition

Abstract

Abstract. Teacher-students’ interaction patterns in EFL teaching can be considered crucial to be investigated. It is due to the reason that interaction in English classroom may facilitate pupils in practicing the language skills they have learnt in a real context. In doing this, Classroom Discourse Analysis (CDA) can be an alternative way in order to seek the level of accuracy in portraying classroom activities. Dealing with this, the present study aimed at analyzing teacher-students’ interaction patterns that occurred in EFL classroom interaction. This was a descriptive qualitative study. The participants of this study were an English teacher at one vocational school students and 36 students of XII grade. In collecting the data, classroom observation was administered. The data then were transcribed and analyzed by using SMSLEFA (Synergetic Multilayered Students’ Learning Engagement Framework of Analysis) framework as a part of Classroom Discourse Analysis proposed by Suherdi (2010) and Berry’s Exchange System Network (ESN). The data revealed that both non-anomalous exchanges and anomalous exchanges occurred during the teaching and learning process, specifically there were 54 K-oriented exchanges, 36 S-oriented exchanges, and 6 A-oriented exchanges. In addition, Dk1-initiated patterns and Ds1-initiated patterns appeared as the dominant patterns in the corpus. The findings implied that the activities conducted by the teacher focused on checking students’ understanding about the text and developing students’ skill, particularly students’ reading skill and speaking skill. the result of this study can be utilize to investigate the effort that learners devote to the learning process that are linked to their achievement. Keywords: teacher-students’ interaction, Classroom Discourse Analysis, SMSLEFA

Abstract

Abstract. This study aims to compare the social life of Tokyo workers and what Yoshihiro Tatsumi describes in the comic gekiga “Abandon the Old in Tokyo” in the period of Japan’s rapid economic growth (mid 1950-early 1970) using the sociological approach of literary works. Social life that will be studied is specifically on the social interactions of Tokyo workers with society, employers, colleagues, parents and also the form of the worker's family system at that time. The method used in this study is the qualitative descriptive method. The findings showed that the comic story, despite being a work of fiction, does indeed depict the real social conditions of Tokyo workers during a period of rapid economic growth where workers tend to be individualistic and hedonistic. The rapid changes in Tokyo at that time does not carry over into the work environment where workers still adhere to patrilineal management which is very formal, however between colleagues some form of informality and intimacy still exists in the face of extremely difficult working conditions. Meanwhile, the neglect of parents by the younger generation occurs a lot due to changes in the family system changing from the IE system to the kazoku system, the economic and the housing situation, as well as the relationship between family members is no longer close. Marriage no longer occurs to maintain the IE system and customs, rather, marriage occurs on the basis of love between husband and wifeKeywords: Sociological Analysis, Abandon the Old in Tokyo, Gekiga, Workers

Abstract

Abstract. Falling into the language for specific purposes area of study, French-language training for hospitality students ideally offers learning materials needed for developing students’ specific language skills in their particular area of specialization. A comprehensive needs analysis then plays a central role in order to design coursebook materials meeting such language skills demands. Therefore, this study was aimed to develop a French-language coursebook with a basic consideration taken from the need analysis process. The framework of this study was Research and Development (R&D) by adopting the Dick & Carey procedures. There were five main procedures, i.e. analyzing the students’ needs, planning (drafting course grid), drafting the coursebook, expert judgment, and revising the coursebook. This research employed two instruments, i.e. questionnaires (for collecting the students’ needs in a need analysis step) and experts’ rubrics (for experts’ judgments). The first step of this study was conducting a needs analysis (NA, hereafter) involving 120 respondents chosen purposively. The data collected through NA questionnaires were analyzed descriptively. The data from NA were used to design the coursebook. Considering the result of experts’ judgments regarding the appropriateness of the content, the appropriateness of language, the appropriateness of materials presented, and the appropriateness of layout presentation, the hospitality coursebook developed is examined as a viable coursebook. Keywords: Needs Analysis, Coursebook, Material Development, French for Specific Purposes, Hospitality

Abstract

Abstract. Reading comprehension and critical thinking skills are pivotal skills which can trigger academic achievements of students in the English Foreign Language Learning. This study was conducted to improve those students’ reading comprehension and critical thinking skills by implementing Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA). The researcher conducted the study by following the classroom action research approach that consists of four steps in each of its cycles consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The researcher used pre-test, post-test, and questionnaire to collect the data. The data from the result of tests were analyzed quantitatively while the observation results were analyzed qualitatively. The study results show that the implementation of DRTA can improve students' reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. DRTA can improve students reading skills and critical thinking because the DRTA strategy focuses on student engagement with the text. Hence, students have to predict and prove when the students read, and it makes the learning process more interactive and the students more active. Thus, the researcher recommends DRTA for those teachers who find similar problems in improving students’ reading comprehension and critical thinking. Keywords: Critical Thinking, Directed Reading Thinking Activity, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

Abstract. Language teaching has developed with the support of techniques, media, and learning approaches that complement each other. However, the need to develop linguistic skills never arrest and need to be improved continuously. One of the models developed in the early 21st century is adaptive learning, but this learning tends to be more widely applied outside of language teaching. Therefore, This study aims to find concrete forms of adaptive learning that can be applied in appropriately developing speaking skills in German. A qualitative, descriptive approach is employed in this study, focusing on an inductive inquiry into phenomena and fact-finding on adaptive learning. The learning source employed in the learning is a coursebook called Netzwerk Deutsch als Fremdsprache. To bridge the rigidity of the content and the less flexible learning aspects delivered by the coursebook, we tried to integrate it with the campus internal learning management system Besmart-Moodle. There were 12 students (initials P1-12) who participated in learning and practising speaking-oriented learning. We collected data using video recordings, digital questionnaires and field notes. Afterwards, we analyzed participants' conduct and responses using coding procedures to formulate categories relevant to adaptive learning forms. The results showed that most participants viewed this learning positively, and it supported improving their speaking skills effectively. In addition, for both students and lecturers, this learning model thoroughly impacted the learning process concerning certain linguistic facets and enriched previous research. Keywords: Adaptive learning, German, Speaking Skills, Digital Learning, Besmart

Abstract

Abstract. This article aims to analyze and describe students' progressivity in the English lecture. Progressivity is based on changes in perception variables and learning experiences based on the efficiency of using TOEFL AIO and CBT E-Learning. We followed descriptive qualitative design approach, using reflection sheet in questions to collect data who involved 77 students as participants through purposive sampling. Data was collected through the distribution of questions in reflection by using a combination of Open-ended and Close-ended Questions. The data were analyzed by coding to the variables and Spradley's ethnoscience analysis in describing the data by looking at the domain, taxonomy, and componential and expanding the interpretation by looking at the cultural themes of the existing data as main thematic analysis. The results show students believe that mental progressivity and student cognition that affect changes in student perceptions and learning experiences previously tended negative to progressive. Besides, they also believe the lecturers, as the main key role, determine whether there is progress or not and the application or platform will not play a role without the flexibility of the lecturer in the classroom. Then, the efficiency of the application and platform will impact students if the lecturer can make changes to student beliefs that have a domino effect on anxiety and internal motivation through a casual-contextual approach according to the perspective of the students themselves. As conclusion, this experience and progressivity were evaluated positively by them as long as ELT learning process activity puts students at the center and see how their perspectivesKeywords: Progressivity, Perception, Learning Experience, Platform And Application Efficiency
