Abstract

Abstract. It is not enough to teach a language without acknowledging culture while teaching English as a Foreign Language, so teachers must be culturally conscious of incorporating culture into their teaching activities. This research was conducted to investigate the cultural awareness of pre-service EFL teachers in the higher education context. The aim is to find out the cultural understanding of cultural differences of the pre-service EFL teachers. This research used a qualitative research design. The participants of this research were 20 pre-service EFL teachers who had attended the PPG program in 2018. A questionnaire by Marx and Moss (2011) on My Cultural Awareness Profile (MyCAP) was adopted as an instrument of this research. The study's findings showed that the participants had a significant cultural awareness and understanding of cultural differences. However, due to the limited time and approach employed in the study, the researchers hope that more researchers will be attracted to look further into intercultural understanding in higher education with different subjects and approaches.Keywords: Cultural Awareness, Cultural Understanding, Cultural Differences, Pre-Service EFL Teacher

Abstract

Abstract. There are many things to consider in translating children’s stories: behavioral influence on children, level of language difficulty, and suitability to the target culture. A child has limitations in their social interactions and communications. This article analyzes the translation of pronouns and repetitions in a children’s story with Google Translate. As an online application, Google Translate is considered to have the ability to translate words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and even paragraphs. This study aims to reveal the ability of google translate to translate children's stories, especially Indonesian pronouns and repetitions into French. This study used data from the translation of an Indonesian children's story titled “Petualangan Si Kancil” (literal translation: “The Adventures of the Mouse Deer”) by means of Google Translate, adopting descriptive and comparative methods. The results of data analysis show that Google Translate only translates word for word or sentence for sentence, and has not considered the cultural context. In detail, the results are as follow: (i) pronoun translation cannot sufficiently reflect both the writing style and the cultural context of the source text, (ii) translation of repetitions is avoided and replaced with lexical equivalence.Keywords: Children’s Story; Google Translate; Pronouns; Repetitions

Abstract

Abstract.  Since the release of the 2013 Curriculum system by the Indonesian Ministry of Education, the vocabulary of Indonesian senior high school Chinese textbooks has constantly been changing. In 2021, The National Language Commission of the Ministry of Education, PRC, released the Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education (Grading Standard). In the same year, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia encouraged learning according to students' abilities and provided more expansive space for character development and essential competencies through the 2022 Prototype Curriculum system as an option for all academic units. This curriculum is a system implemented between 2022 and 2024 in the post-COVID-19 learning recovery. Based on the analysis of these new standards, we find out how to adapt to curriculum changes, find out which difficulties arise and how to overcome them. In this study, we use analytic and quantitative research to analyze the teachers' adaptation process to the two new standards in textbook vocabulary. Furthermore, we use the vocabulary statistics of Mandarin textbooks for senior high school, textbook compiling principle-based these two standards and related theory. Through the analysis and statistics of the vocabulary in this textbook, we found that teachers need to adjust some main words in adapting to the two new standards and make a vocabulary selection and supplement to the textbook vocabulary. In addition, to meet the standards of government textbook preparation and meet the expectations of textbook users to understand social life in China through vocabulary to achieve better communication, teachers need teaching resources for textbook vocabulary teaching in this adaptation.Keywords: Indonesian curriculum Prototype Curriculum,Vocabulary learning,Chinese Language new standard, Bahasa Mandarin/汉语 textbook.

Abstract

Abstract. Reflective teaching is a means to improve teacher professionalism. By applying reflective teaching, teachers can not only find out their strengths and weaknesses during teaching, but also re-examine their principles and beliefs. In this regard, the purpose of this study is to determine the extent to which in-service EFL teachers understand the concept of reflective teaching, the reflection strategies they apply, and the obstacles that might hinder them in reflecting. This research is categorized as a descriptive-qualitative study which involved six junior high school in-service EFL teachers from four districts in Central Java and the Special Region of Yogyakarta. This study administered 3 data collection techniques, which are in-depth interviews, stimulated recall, and close-ended questionnaires as the data triangulation. The findings indicated that of the six participants, only two had heard or knew about the term reflective teaching. However, they have integrated reflection to their teaching practice and showed their ability to reflect within the level of dialogic reflection. Descriptive writing as the lowest level serves as their point of departure before they came to the higher levels (descriptive reflection and dialogic reflection). There was no evidence to show that the participants had reached the highest level of reflection, which is critical reflection. Further examination found that there were two major issues that hindered participants from reflecting, i.e. their lack of knowledge about the concepts and strategies of reflective teaching and a heavy number of administrative workload which reduced their reflection time.Keywords: Reflective Teaching, EFL, Reflective Practice, Reflection

Abstract

Abstract. The objective of this study was to develop Lahat local culture-based  instructionalnarrative reading materials which are valid, practical, and have potential effect for secondary school students. This study applied development research which was conductedthrough three phases including analysis, design, and evaluation and revision phases. There were five stages of formative evaluation used in the evaluation phase, they are self-evaluation, expert review, one-to-one evaluation, small group evaluation, and field test evaluation. The participants of this study were theninth-grade students of a public junior high school in Lahat Regency, South Sumatera in academic year 2020/2021.  The data were obtained using questionnaire and reading comprehension test.In determining the validity and practicality of the developed reading materials, the average score of questionnaires from experts’ judgement (for validity) and questionnaire in one-to-one and small group evaluation (for practically) were used. The results showed that the developed product was valid (average score 3.87) and practical (average score 4.6). Abstract

Abstract. This study aimed to investigate factors affecting the students’ L2 language development. This issue was raised because second language acquisition is one of the most impressive and fascinating aspects of human communication skills. This study was also intended to help students effectively learn and understand the language. This was a descriptive quantitative study. The samples were 158 preservice students in the English Education Department, Universitas Borneo Tarakan. This data was collected using an online questionnaire through google form to indicate the students’ responses on how English as a second language is acquired by the learning experience and was analyzed using factorial analysis (principle componential analysis). This research found that second language development is affected by linguistic factors like vocabulary enrichment, the structure of the native language, and the ability to pronounce words. Besides, non-linguistic factors like cognitive styles, psychological aspects, personality traits, technology use, and age also influenced students’ learning processes and outcomes. It can be shown from personal characteristics and experiences of the learner, social and cultural environment both inside (virtual/ offline meeting) and outside (online assignment/ project/ task-based) of the classroom, the opportunities for communication, access to both oral and written corrective feedback and instruction let by teachers. Those factors were not fully controlled by the teachers but understanding those aspects will make teachers able to consider how students learn English in effective ways to mitigate their learning loss in rapid knowledge growth and technological advancement era. Abstract

Abstract. Collocation is the co-occurrence of words comprising a node and one or more collocates. Insufficient studies have documented on the equivalence of source language (SL) collocation into more than one version of target language (TL) collocation. Hence, this study aims to explore the equivalence of English clausal extension collocations in the three versions of Indonesian translated novels, to identify the typology of the translations, to deal with the cohesive ties of the translations, to investigate the translation techniques used, and to observe the impact of translation techniques on the quality of the translation in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The methods applied in this research were quantitative and descriptive qualitative. The data were taken from a novel Pride and Prejudice and the three versions of Indonesian translated novels. Documentary analysis was implemented in collecting the data. They were pinpointed, coded, evaluated, classified and analysed. Further, the findings indicate that English clausal extension collocations are translated into Indonesian in the form of clausal extension, verbal extension, clausal enhancement, verbal enhancement collocation, and non-verbal node collocation. Meanwhile, the cohesive ties of the collocations include strong and weak cohesive ties. The translation techniques applied are generalization, established equivalence, modulation, amplification, and discursive creation. The use of generalization, established equivalence, modulation and amplification results in accurate, acceptable, and readable translations. On the other hand, discursive creation and deletion result in less accurate, less acceptable and less readable. It was concluded that it is the arbitrariness of language that results the different typology and cohesive tie of collocation among languages. Abstract

Abstract. This research aims to identify the language styles used in a biography book, ‘The Sultan’s Admiral.’ The identification may help us see how various language styles add to non-fiction writing and are structured in a biography book. This current research is a qualitative analysis that uses a content analysis method. The data source is available from the biography ‘The Sultan’s Admiral: Barbarossa’ written by Ernle Bradford and published in English language edition in 2008. The data comes in the form of linguistic elements such as syntax, lexis, and semantic forms of the text. The data analysis technique categorizes or determines stylish language features from the sample and the level of style related to linguistics and stylistics approaches. Lexis, syntactic and semantic level of language style is prior categories of this research. As a result, the technical terms and adjectives are used in the lexical level of style, direct quotations, and em-dashed ( – ) adjuncts in sentences as the structural level of style, idioms, and figures of speech are used in the semantic level of style. Those chosen styles appear with the writer's background to give extra values to the actual story. This research describes and classifies portions among several linguistic features used by the narrator/writer in the development of narrative in Barbarossa's legendary life, to demonstrate the benefits of the technique in incorporating linguistic aspects into the text. Abstract

Abstract.  In academic writing, an abstract is the most important initial part of a publication. Besides being substantive, an abstract is a reflection of the quality of the publication. Based on fifty abstracts from Indonesian undergraduate students’ publications in two departments, this study aimed to explore these questions: (1) how do Indonesian undergraduate students apply the rhetoric moves in their research abstracts and (2) how do Indonesian undergraduate students apply the thematic patterns in their research abstracts? In doing so, Paltridge’s (2012) Thematic Progression and Swales’s (2004) CARS model were adopted. The results showed at least three obligatory rhetorical moves in the abstract written by Indonesian undergraduate students, viz., (a) situating the research, (b) describing the methodology, (c) and summarizing the findings. The results also indicated that both linear and constant thematic patterns tended to be predominantly utilized by students. This was evident in certain linguistic features including grammatical subjects, verb tense, and voice. This study provides practical and pedagogical implications for lecturers and undergraduate students involved in academic writing, and suggestions for future research.Keywords: Research Abstract, Rhetoric Moves, Thematic Patterns, Indonesian Undergraduate Students

Abstract

Abstract. The purpose of this study is to develop an foreign language teaching material based on Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and to investigate the impacts of the implementation of the teaching material in increasing students’ literacy skill. This study used research and development approach by adopting ADDIE model which consisted of 5 steps (Analyze-Design-Develop-Implement-Evaluate). The participants of the study were 25 students who took General Writing and Reading course in the English Literature study program in the fifth semester. An assent form was given to all the participants. Data were collected by using study test results, scale and interview. The data of the study were 1) the results of validation test from five expert validators regarding the teaching material being developed, 2) the results of students’ study test comprised of writing and reading tests, and 3) qualitative data regarding students’ responses to the teaching material being developed. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics were used to make categorization of pre-test and post-test scores, while inferential statistics were used to analyze the paired sample t-test to know if there was a significant difference between pre-test and post-test. The results of the study showed that the implementation of HOTS-based teaching material being developed had positive impacts significantly on the improvement of students’ literacy skill, which were in this regard the results of learning General Writing and Reading course.
