Abstract

The application of liberal feminism to modern film analysis is discussed in this article. Ideas from liberal feminist thinkers such as Mary Wollstonecraft, John Stuart Mill, Rosemarie Tong, and Joyce Trebilcot are incorporated. The researchers used a library research method and conceptual framework approach for this qualitative study to examine how Wollstonecraft's ideas often align with 18th- to 20th-century film themes and how later thinkers broadened liberal feminism concepts to encompass values that relate to modern-themed films. The findings of this research demonstrated that, in line with the theory employed by the researchers, Wollstonecraft's liberal feminism is closely linked to 18th-20th century films, often depicting women's struggles for politics, education, and suffrage, while Mill, Tong, and Trebilcot's liberal feminism aligns with modern films discussing issues like ambition, self-discovery, personal freedom, gender justice, and mono-androgyny. It can be concluded that researchers can explore liberal feminist values like gender justice, autonomy, and equal freedom in analyzing modern films using Mill, Tong, and Trebilcot's ideas.

Abstract

This research analyzes the stages and psychological effects of child grooming in Priscilla (2023), which portrays an unequal relationship between a minor and an adult public figure. The film depicts grooming through emotional manipulation rather than explicit abuse. As an autobiographical adaptation of Priscilla Presley’s life, it centers the victim rather than the perpetrator. The study employs McAlinden’s theory of child grooming, the grooming stages model by Winters, Jeglic, and Kaylor, and Elliot and Briere’s indicators of psychological effects. Using a qualitative method and Wellek and Warren’s psychological approach to literature, the analysis applies Petrie and Boggs’ framework of conflict and characterization in film. The findings identify five manipulation stages, which are victim selection, gaining access and isolating a child, trust development, desensitization to sexual content and physical contact, and maintenance following the abuse, and six psychological effects, which are anxiety, depression, dissociation, sexual problems, sleep disturbance, and post-traumatic symptoms. These findings appear through both internal and external conflicts, with internal conflict being the most dominant. Characterization reveals Priscilla’s passivity, emotional fragility, and dependency on Elvis. This study demonstrates that film, as a form of literary work, can represent the emotional, behavioral, and cognitive consequences of child grooming through its intrinsic elements of conflict and characterization.

Abstract

This research focuses on analyzing the language style used by Otto in the film A Man Called Otto. The researcher used language style theory by Martin Joos who classifies language style into five styles, which are frozen style, formal style, consultative style, casual style and intimate style. This research uses qualitative research as the method and a sociolinguistic approach. In collecting data, the researcher watched and read both film and the transcript, marked the related data, and then collected the data based on theory. The findings indicate that Otto frequently used casual and intimate styles in his interactions, while formal and consultative styles appeared less often. These results suggest that Otto tends to communicate in a more relaxed and personal manner, especially with people he feels close to which can be seen when Otto communicates with his friends who have close relationships with him. But when Otto talks to a person who does not have close relationship with him, he has difficulty expressing what he wants to convey in communication, which causes misunderstanding due to the use of wrong language styles.
