Abstract

The purpose of this study is to provide an in-depth description of the application of a holistic approach in Indonesian language learning and its benefits for elementary school students. The research method used is qualitative with a qualitative descriptive design. Data were collected through unstructured interviews with teachers, participatory observation in the classroom, and documentation, then analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. The results showed that the holistic approach, with the principles of Connectedness, Wholeness, and Being, can integrate language skills with the context of students' lives, involve various senses and emotions, and provide opportunities for exploration of interests and talents. This approach has the potential to improve students' understanding of the subject matter, develop critical thinking skills, creativity and strong character, and create a fun, democratic and humanist learning atmosphere.

Abstract

This study explores students’ perceptions of using WhatsApp as a knowledge-sharing platform in a rural university in the Eastern Cape. A total sample of 52 students participated in the study, with data collected through interviews and focus group discussions. The research examines how WhatsApp facilitates collaborative learning and academic resource sharing in a resource-constrained environment. Thematic analysis revealed that students perceive WhatsApp as a valuable tool for real-time communication, enhancing peer engagement, and fostering group collaboration. Its accessibility and ease of use were highlighted as significant advantages, particularly in overcoming geographic and infrastructural barriers. However, students also identified challenges, such as distractions, data costs, and occasional misuse for non-academic purposes. Despite these limitations, participants acknowledged WhatsApp's role in creating a supportive and interactive learning environment. The findings offer insights for students and lecturers seeking to optimize the use of social media platforms for educational purposes in rural settings.

Abstract

The purpose is to evaluate the effectiveness of reading logs and identify alternative literacy activities that are developmentally appropriate for young learners. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through classroom observations, document analysis, semi-structured interviews with teachers and librarians, and focus group discussions with students. The findings reveal that while reading logs offer structure for reading practice, they present cognitive, emotional, and practical challenges that reduce students’ reading motivation and comprehension. Many students struggled with summarization tasks, often viewing the logs as a burden. In contrast, alternative activities such as interactive storytelling, drawing, peer discussions, and digital tools were found to be more engaging and effective. The study concludes that integrating diverse and interactive literacy activities better supports early literacy development and fosters a more positive reading experience for young learners.

Abstract

Primary school teachers' understanding of literacy learning is often limited to reading and writing skills, whereas 21st century literacy skills include comprehension, analysis of information, and expression of emotions and thoughts. This study developed a model of Qur'an-based Differentiated Literacy Learning using the ADDIE development method, which involved observations, interviews and questionnaires. The model goes through five stages: analyzing learners' needs and characteristics, designing Qur'an-integrated learning, developing strategies and materials, implementing in trials, and evaluating learning outcomes and socio-emotional intelligence. The results showed that the model not only significantly improved students' literacy, but also strengthened their social-emotional intelligence, as seen from increased participation and positive interactions inside and outside the classroom. The model was rated as highly feasible and practical by experts. The results of this study make an important contribution to literacy learning that is holistic and based on the moral and spiritual values of the Qur'an.

Abstract

Innovative learning media in primary education remains limited, affecting students’ comprehension. Cultural diversity is often taught conventionally, making it less interactive. This study develops a QR Code-based Pop-Up Book as a learning tool combining three-dimensional elements and digital technology. The Research and Development (R&D) method was applied using the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). Experts validated the content, media, and language, while trials were conducted with fifth-grade students at SDN 160/IV Kota Jambi. Results showed high validity scores (91% content, 89% media, 93% language), with 90% practicality and 91.8% attractiveness. The QR Code-based Pop-Up Book effectively enhances students’ understanding and has strong potential for wider use in primary education.

Abstract

Early reading skills are essential for elementary students, yet many struggle due to unengaging methods and limited media support. This study examines the effectiveness of reading board media in improving first graders’ reading abilities. Using Classroom Action Research (CAR) based on the Kemmis & McTaggart model, the research was conducted in two cycles. Data were collected through observations, reading tests, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Results indicate significant improvement in students' reading skills. The first cycle increased students' interest and participation, while the second cycle enhanced fluency in reading words and simple sentences. The findings confirm that reading board media effectively boosts early reading skills and learning motivation. This interactive approach is recommended as an innovative literacy tool, supported by teacher training, parental involvement, and adequate facilities, to foster a more engaging and effective early reading experience.

Abstract

The Merdeka Curriculum addresses educational challenges in Indonesia by offering flexible learning and emphasizing character development. SD Negeri 194/VI Tambang Emas I has adopted this curriculum to enhance learning quality and align students with the Profil Pelajar Pancasila. However, challenges remain, including teacher readiness, parental involvement, and limited infrastructure. This study uses a qualitative case study approach, collecting data through observations, interviews with teachers and students, and document analysis. Data were analyzed using reduction, presentation, and conclusion techniques to understand implementation challenges and opportunities. The findings show that while the curriculum's flexibility enhances project-based learning, its effectiveness is hindered by a lack of teacher training and administrative burdens. Additionally, low parental engagement and inadequate infrastructure remain significant barriers. To ensure successful implementation, practical teacher training, stronger school-parent communication, and improved facilities are essential. Strengthening these aspects will help optimize the curriculum’s benefits for students

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the computational thinking skills of elementary school students. This research approach uses a qualitative and quantitative descriptive approach. The subjects of the study involved 70 fifth grade students at an elementary school in Malang City. The research instruments were in the form of observation sheets and tests, the data obtained were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The results of the analysis of critical and computational thinking of elementary school students showed that computational thinking skills were still lacking, 35.4% and 54% for critical thinking. The recommendation from the research results is to make it a habit for elementary school students to continue practicing high-level thinking skills through the learning process and the use of learning devices based on high-level thinking skills.
