Abstract

Previous studies assessed that the Korean Wave, including the music group Bangtan Sonyeondan (BTS), had campaigned for a different side of masculinity. BTS, through their music, seems to carry the concept of a "female-friendly model of masculinity". This feminine masculine identity is attached to BTS members and creates a typical stereotype of Asian men in the United States. This study aims to determine the representation of masculinity displayed by the boy group BTS in their video clips from 2013 to 2021 and observe at least 33 video clips. The researcher observed the symbol representation in the video clip with a Critical Discourse Analysis from Norman Fairclough and then conducted a thematic analysis by Braun and Clarke. The results showed a change in the representation of masculinity throughout their careers. This change in representation is also a form of compromise and negotiation between BTS as artists and the music industry's demands at an international level

Abstract

The extensive usage of social media in today's globalized society has had an impact on the education industry. To undertake academic and non-academic activities, social media are usually utilized by students in higher distance education to communicate with peers and instructors during the learning process. Some of them had difficulty adjusting to the new method of learning. The goal of the study is to examine how they utilize social media in relation to their access behaviour. This online survey received responses from 549 individuals in purposive samplingThe finding shows a considerable correlation between access capacity behaviour and social media usage. It is evident that access habits, which are supported by behaviour and accessibility, have a substantial effect on the use of entertainment and socialization. Based on these findings, it is understandable that social media offer more abundantly relaxing contents that easily tempts students than the serious ones. In order to address this issue, educational institutions must develop several easy and engaging media-based educational tools.

Abstract

This study examined the cognitive response of Indonesian society (namely, the people who use digital mass media) to the narratives built by digital mass media. Establishing an argumentative “communication” relationship between digital mass media and society is necessary because the narratives built by digital mass media tend to represent particular interests. Therefore, between the two, an argumentative “communication” relationship is needed to reach a consensus through the expression of rational language. This relationship actually forms a communicative society based on the value of emancipatory critical rationality to achieve "consensus". Thus, the problem posed in this study, ‘How is the cognitive response and form of digital society in Indonesia within the scope of the digital mass media era?’ To answer that question this study used a qualitative approach by conducting a sociological study of the narratives in the digital mass media user community, especially convergence mass media (kompas.com, tempo.co, and tribunnews.com). While the technique of the validity test of the narrative data of people who use digital mass media uses was the triangulation technique of sources and theories. This study found that digital society can create and produce imaginative spaces based on its own laws and culture. Its awareness of the digital mass media narrative is solid and shifts its passive role as an object to be ‘interactive’ (itself as a subject) with mass media. Meanwhile, the relationship between digital society and communication technology has three options, namely, first, digital society positions itself as technology; second, humanize technology as itself; and third, dialectically compromising the potential of humanity and technology.

Abstract

The research will review the effect of Content Creator on adolescent consumptive behavior. The object of research is the TikTok account @carlendoraa. The research population is the followers of the TikTok account @carlendoraa, most of which are teenagers, amounting to 374,000. Determination of the sample uses the Slovin formula, which obtained a total sample of 100 people. The correlational research method is used to determine research hypotheses and the data will be analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The results of the research display a significant value of 0.018 < 0.005, which means that there is a correlation between the content creator of Tiktok @carlendoraa and the consumer behavior of teenagers in online shopping. The correlation value of 0.237 implicates a relatively weak, albeit significant correlation between content creator Tiktok @carlendoraa and adolescent consumptive behavior in online shopping.

Abstract

The massive use of Instagram in Indonesia aligns with the high need for emerging adults to socialize and express themselves. This makes users face much information, making it vulnerable to causing social media fatigue. This study examines the role of the information overload variable as a mediator of the relationship between the intensity of social media use and social media fatigue in the emerging adult group. Respondents in this study were aged 18-25 years, including 145 men and 182 women. Data was collected using three scales: SONTUS Revised Version, Information Overload Scales, and the SMFS Scale, adapted into Indonesian. The collected data was tested using PROCESS Macro (Model 4) involving intermediary variables with the help of the SPSS Statistics 26.0 for Windows program. This study's results indicate a mediating effect of excess information in the relationship between the intensity of social media use and social media fatigue. Complete mediation occurs because the direct impact becomes insignificant when the extra information variable is added to the equation

Abstract

This research is an attempt to understand communication and local wisdom centered on mamak (MmK) and kamanakan (KmN) communication in the Minangkabau community in West Sumatra in tackling the Covid-19 pandemic. The research is motivated by the reality of the world which is experiencing a crisis due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which has caused many setbacks in all fields, especially in the social, cultural and economic fields. Data analysis was carried out by exploring and narrating community experiences, and analyzing domains that are considered potential for developing cultural communication, maintaining local wisdom and communication gaps between generations. The results of the study show that the MmK – KmN communication is still quite well maintained and useful for the educational process and solving problems that arise as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the vertical communication pattern from top to bottom places MMK as the party that knows best about the problem of communication generations gaps, so it must be modified according to the development of KmN's knowledge which is more technologically literate and has more access to various sources of information.

Abstract

Social media has seamlessly integrated into the daily lives of countless individuals, captivating users who spend significant portions of their time scrolling through their feeds and interacting with their online connections. This digital era, however, has brought to light a darker side – the prevalence of hate speech and abusive behavior, notably among Indonesian netizens. This study seeks to identify and scrutinize official Instagram accounts of certain celebrities, focusing on the presence of hate speech. Employing a quantitative research method with content analysis, the research centers on comments made by fans. Data will be gathered, coded, and subjected to a reliability test for categorization. The findings underscore a disturbingly high incidence of hate speech on Instagram accounts, highlighting the need for intervention from multiple stakeholders, particularly within the realms of communication science and prophetic communication. This research offers invaluable insights into social media usage and paves the way for corrective measures, education, and evaluation, ultimately striving to foster a more positive and constructive social media environment for all users.
