Abstract

Purpose – This study aimed to develop yoga activities based on prayer movements to train children’s self-control. The subjects in this study were early childhood children in the TK B group. Design/methods/approach – This research uses development research (R&D). Feasibility assessment of the development of prayer movement-based Yoga to train children’s self-control based on the assessment of media experts, yoga experts, and group B students as test subjects. Analysis using qualitative and quantitative data analysis, collecting data using interview guidelines, observation documentation, and questionnaires. Findings – The results showed that the development of prayer movement-based Yoga through a series of trials and expert validation, was workable for training children’s self-control which included (1) the ability to regulate behavior, (2) the ability to regulate stimuli, (3) the ability to consider things and events, ( 4) the ability to evaluate events and things positively, and (5) the ability to determine actions. Research implications/limitations – This research can be the basis and guideline for further research related to Yoga based on prayer movements in training self-control in early childhood. Researchers suggest that there are other studies regarding using Yoga based on prayer movements to train children’s self-control and other abilities from an early age. The drawback of this study is that it did not conduct a practical test due to time constraints. Practical implications – This research produces Yoga products based on prayer movements. Teachers and parents can use it to train children’s self-control from childhood. So that the results of developing this product can be helpful, and other schools can practice it in training children’s self-control or other abilities after the pandemic that hit the world. Originality/value – The development of Yoga based on prayer movements can train the self-control abilities of early childhood. Researchers recommend using prayer movement-based yoga in kindergartens to train children’s self-control. Paper type Research paper

Abstract

Purpose – The pandemic-era policy that requires schools to conduct face-to-face meetings is an issue that cannot be taken "lightly". The trend of face-to-face learning that has entrenched makes schools, including ECCE institutions, "profitable". There are not many alternatives that can be done, other than using online face to face applications that have been popular such as Whatsapp and other Messanger. However, the use of these applications cannot cover all Early Childhood Education (ECE) learning needs with their own characteristics that are generally different from learning at other levels of education. Therefore, a more suitable online learning system is needed such as through the Si-Pappa Information System/Application. Design/methods/approach – For this purpose, in this study, the PAR (Participation Action Research) Method was used with assisted objects, namely 10 ECE Institutions in Palopo City which have been partners of the Islamic Early Childhood Education IAIN Palopo Study Program. Data collection methods utilizing Performance Tests are reinforced by unstructured interviews and direct observation. Findings – The results of data analysis, the parameters of the results of the implementation of service were achieved, namely the average participant who was able to master the parameters of more than 83%. From this, it can be concluded that the Application of Information Systems (Si-Pappa) can improve the effectiveness of ECCE services during the pandemic in Palopo City. Research implications/limitations – This study related to the problems of learning effectiveness during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Practical implications – The use of the Si-Pappa application allows parents to conduct direct and measurable consultations from the existing menu, making teachers provide methodical assistance because the video calls made are directly integrated into each participant's account so that it can be directly reviewed or confirmed from other menus such as autentic assessment conditions that show photos of children, flow charts or worksheets of learning activities, anecdotal notes related to special or unique conditions of children, and various other comparative data that can be used in determining mood conditions, causes used in making decisions to follow up to determine a wiser and more comprehensive solution for children. Originality/value – The impact of teacher understanding of the concept of learning from home in the context of using applications is that teachers not only view learning applications such as Si-Pappa only as learning tools or media, but are able to appreciate the presence of applications as assistance partners that will make learning more effective. Abstract

Purpose – This article reports on a project to facilitate teachers’ digital skill improvement. The context of the project itself was the past COVID-19 pandemic, which paralized the education sector, including the closure of early childhood education (ECE) centers. While remote, online learning was highly recommended to face disastrous situation such as pandemic, in practice, especially at the ECE level, online learning faces complex challenges. On the other hand, teachers were not adequately prepared for online and digital learning. Design/methods/approach – This study combined developmental and conventional descriptive methods. The participants (15 people) were teachers, with various backgrounds of work experience (2 to over 7 years), with good internet access skills. Data and information were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation; followed by descriptive analysis. Findings – These teachers found that Podcasts could be an alternative and a variation of digital learning media. Making and using podcasts can also be an entry point in strengthening the integration of Technological and Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) in the ECE context. Research implications/limitations – While storytelling Podcast as ECE learning tool was used limitedly during the COVID-19 period, its uses may last beyond the pandemic time provided systematic integration of digital technology and skills associated with it into ECE sector is met.  Practical implications – This study implies that storytelling podcasts can be an alternative learning tool in the situation where teacher-student face-to-face interaction is less possible. Originality/value – The emergency period prevented teacher-student direct contacts. This study contributes to providing an alternative to learning in an emergency situation. Paper type Research paper

Abstract

Purpose – This study explored why South African Foundation Phase teachers are reluctant and anxious to teach Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) content to young learners. The unit of analysis was Foundation Phase teachers in public schools. Design/methods/approach – Adopting a qualitative, interpretive approach, the study conducted semi-structured interviews with six teachers from primary schools in Gauteng Province. The study used thematic analysis to understand teachers' perceptions and attitudes toward CSE. The data was analysed using Creswell’s six steps of data analysis. Findings – Findings reveal a varied understanding of CSE among teachers, with some viewing it narrowly as sex education and others recognising its broader scope, including emotional development and safety. Primary reasons for reluctance include perceived age inappropriateness, discomfort with content, and cultural and religious constraints. The lack of adequate training and resources further exacerbates this reluctance. Research implications/limitations – This study on South African teachers' reluctance to teach Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) in the Foundation Phase has critical implications for educational policy and practice, emphasizing the need for culturally sensitive curriculum development, comprehensive teacher training, and supportive educational environments. However, its limitations include a reliance on teacher perceptions, a small sample size from a single district, and the absence of quantitative data, which may affect the generalizability of its findings. Future research should expand geographically, employ diverse methodologies, and examine the effects of curriculum and training reforms on CSE's effectiveness in varied South African educational contexts. Practical implications – The study underscores the importance of developing a culturally sensitive, comprehensive CSE curriculum and professional development programs for South African teachers. It highlights the need for clear educational guidelines and resources to assist teachers in effectively delivering CSE content to young learners. Originality/value – This research provides a novel perspective by focusing on the reluctance of Foundation Phase teachers in South Africa to teach CSE, a relatively unexplored area in educational research. It offers valuable insights into the intersection of cultural, religious, and pedagogical factors affecting CSE delivery, contributing significantly to the global discourse on sexuality education in early childhood. Abstract

Purpose –This study aims to analyze the relationship between interest, self-efficacy, and practical teaching experience concerning prospective early childhood education teachers' perceptions of Pedagogical Knowledge of Technology Content. Design/methods/approach – This research employs an associative correlational quantitative design, involving 84 students from the Early Childhood Islamic Education Study Program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. Data was collected through both offline and online questionnaires and analyzed using multiple linear regression techniques. This analysis assesses the predictive capacity of interest, self-efficacy, and teaching experience in determining TPACK within the perceptions of prospective ECCE teachers. Data analysis was aided by the statistical software SPSS 26 for Windows. Findings – The statistical tests indicate that interest, when considered individually, does not exhibit a positive and significant effect on TPACK. Conversely, self-efficacy and teaching practice experience, when examined separately, demonstrate a positive and significant influence on TPACK. Moreover, when these variables are collectively examined, interest, self-efficacy, and teaching practice experience collectively impact TPACK, showcasing a robust relationship of 75.4%. However, it's worth noting that there are some inconsistencies in the results concerning the impact of interest on TPACK, which may be attributed to a lack of specific context and a detailed examination of respondents' interest levels. Research implications/limitations – This study primarily focuses on elucidating the interplay between interest, self-efficacy, and practical teaching experience in TPACK development. Practical implications – These practical implications are envisioned to enhance the quality of early childhood education and prepare prospective ECCE teachers to confront the evolving technological landscape. Originality/value – This research contributes to an enhanced understanding of the interrelationships between interest, self-efficacy, and practical teaching experience in shaping prospective teachers' perceptions of TPACK, offering novel insights into the professional development of prospective ECCE teachers. Abstract

Purpose – To explore the knowledge, attitude, and practices regarding oral and dental health for mothers of children aged 6 months to 8 years and older children aged above 8 years to 15 years seeking healthcare in a tertiary health facility in the Sokoto metropolis.Design/methods/approach – A cross-sectional study was conducted between February and April 2022. Subjects included mothers of 6 months to < 8 years and children aged 8 to 15 years presenting with minor illnesses to the General outpatient clinic. A structured questionnaire and focus group discussion guide were used to collect the information. Data was analyzed using IBM SPSS version 25.Findings – Out of 238 participants, 128 children were 6 months to <8 years, while 110 were above 8 to 15 years old. Less than half of mothers, 46.9%, had inadequate knowledge, while 20.3% had adequate practices. Among the older children in this study, the proportion of those with good knowledge, attitude, and practice level of oral health was 60%, 61.8%, and 32.7%. There was a significant moderate positive correlation between knowledge and attitude scores but not practice for the 2 groups. Mothers’ education and fathers’ occupation were significantly related to good scores (p=<0.05). Mothers of children with primary teeth and older children with permanent teeth in this study all had poor oral and dental health practices. More awareness programs should be conducted in the community to target those with poor practices. Increasing female education and empowerment is also essential in this regard.Research implications/limitations – This research implies that from an early age, it is necessary to check oral and dental health to prevent infectious diseases.Originality/value – Oral and dental health is an essential aspect of primary health care and is a situation in which the mouth, teeth, and gums are healthy and free from any diseases. Parents, especially mothers, are responsible for maintaining good oral hygiene practices and inculcating good oral hygiene habits in children.Paper Type Research paper
