Abstract

The main problem faced by the Sumber Rejeki Farmers Group in Percut Village, Percut Sei Tuan District, is the low productivity of rice due to saline land and pest infestations. The high soil acidity and low fertility are the main factors hindering rice growth. To address this issue, the community service team from Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), in collaboration with student activity units, Himadita Nursery, implemented a program utilizing Liquid Organic Fertilizer (LOF) Jakaba (Eternal Lucky Mushroom) and planting refugia plants. LOF Jakaba, derived from mushroom cultivation, helps reduce soil acidity and increases essential nutrients, thereby improving soil structure. Meanwhile, refugia plants serve as habitats for natural pest predators, enabling ecological pest control and reducing reliance on chemical pesticides. The methods used in this program included socialization, training, and assistance for farmers in producing and applying LOF Jakaba, as well as planting refugia plants. The results of this initiative showed improved soil fertility, reduced pest infestations, and increased rice productivity. The conclusion of this activity is that this sustainable agricultural approach has the potential to serve as a model for other areas facing similar challenges and can enhance the well-being of farmers in Percut Village.

Abstract

Lake Toba features a diverse array of geological landscapes and rock formations, alongside globally acknowledged cultural and biological variety. The geological diversity of the Lake Toba caldera possesses significant Geological Heritage value. This region possesses significant potential as a premier tourism destination and merits inclusion in a worldwide geopark. A survey in Silahisabungan District identified desolate, landslide-prone regions along the shores of Lake Toba that remain uncultivated. Simultaneously, a significant portion of the region is allocated for ecotourism. Should the tourist site suffer escalating degradation owing to desolation, it is anticipated that the influx of visitors to the Silahisabungan region will likewise diminish. If the community's economic revenue relies exclusively on the tourism industry, the economy would undoubtedly face challenges; therefore, economic income must be derived from several sectors. Consequently, the region urgently requires the implementation of tree planting initiatives, particularly including 1,500 productive tree types. Productive tree seedlings will be cultivated in five villages: Paropo, Paropo I, Silalahi I, Silalahi II, and Silalahi III, located in the Silahisabungan District of Dairi Regency, North Sumatra. The tree planting initiatives are anticipated to yield economic benefits for the community through fruit harvests. This planting initiative would enhance the local economy while reforesting desolate area, hence drawing tourists to Silahisabungan.

Abstract

This article presents an early-stage analysis of the potentials and challenges faced by emerging tourism villages, using the ASTACITA Summit 2025 as a case study. Held in Kuta Gugung Village, North Sumatra, ASTACITA (Strategic Alliance for Collaborative, Inclusive, and Integrated Village Governance) served as a pioneering forum for multi-stakeholder engagement in rural development. The forum brought together actors from government, academia, business, community, and media within a structured dialogue aimed at empowering rural communities through participatory tourism planning. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through participant observation, informal interviews, and documentation of collaborative sessions during the summit. The study mapped key village potentials including cultural uniqueness, natural attractions, and local entrepreneurial initiatives as well as pressing challenges such as infrastructural limitations, governance gaps, and lack of digital capacity. Through structured discussion tables and networking exchanges, the forum enabled a bottom-up identification of strategic priorities, including training needs, partnership opportunities, and local regulation frameworks. Findings suggest that the ASTACITA format not only facilitated knowledge transfer but also generated community-driven insights that can inform long-term development planning. The mapping process served as a reflective and inclusive diagnostic tool that centered local voices while aligning with national rural tourism goals. This study contributes to the discourse on participatory governance and sustainable tourism by showcasing how structured forums like ASTACITA can be harnessed for strategic, data-informed, and collaborative planning in rural contexts.
