Abstract

The disbandment of Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) in 2017 marked a significant shift in the dynamics of Islamist movements within Indonesia’s political landscape. Although officially banned, the HTI continued to operate in the shadows, employing various camouflage methods. This article analyzes how political dynamics led HTI to its outlawed status and how it adapted in pursuit of its goals amidst the challenges faced. By adopting a political opportunity structure and Islamist ideology as the theoretical framework with the case study as the method, this study scrutinizes HTI’s post-disbandment endeavors at the national level and delves deeper into cases in West Java, Yogyakarta, and East Java. The primary findings of this study reveal that the disbandment of HTI reflected the peak of incongruence between the anti-system ideology they embraced and Indonesia’s political structure. HTI’s ideological drive to exploit electoral events in 2016-2017 eventually put them at a threshold that the ruling authority perceives as a severe threat. HTI struggled to maintain its movement, mixing overt and covert operations, and facing significant pressures and constraints. Its strength is rooted in an Islamist ideology that integrates political and religious beliefs, supported by a disciplined structure. This resilience, seen as adaptive resistance, leverages tactical ingenuity and militancy in response to external pressures and the socio-cultural context in which they operate. Nevertheless, the disbandment has rendered it nearly impossible for HTI to reestablish its expansion in Indonesia’s political arena.

Abstract

This study discusses the Role of Women in Efforts to Increase Women’s Representation in the City Council of Banjarmasin for the Period 2019-2024. The low participation of women in politics in Banjarmasin, especially their representation in the City Council, remains low. The aim of this research is to identify the roles of female council members in promoting women’s representation in the City Council of Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan Province. The research design employed in this study is qualitative research method with data collection techniques through interviews and documentation. The collected data were processed using an inductive approach and analyzed through steps including data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. This study utilized the Role Theory by Biddle and Thomas as proposed by Sarwono (2015). The research findings from the four dimensions have been successfully implemented. There are supporting factors, such as internal factors like the lack of qualifications and quality among women, minimal support among women themselves, and a public preference leaning more towards men, which pose significant obstacles. External factors such as policies for empowering women, support from civil society organizations, the role of mass media, and societal awareness also play crucial roles. Efforts made include direct actions like empowering women, political education, and quotas or affirmative policies, which are seen as crucial steps to enhance women’s representation in the Banjarmasin City DPRD (Regional People’s Representative Council). Additionally, indirect efforts such as education and increasing gender awareness are considered important, focusing on changing societal views regarding women’s roles in politics and government policy support. These measures aim to improve women’s representation in the Banjarmasin City DPRD by altering societal perceptions of women’s roles in politics and gaining government policy support. All of these are integral to creating an inclusive and equitable environment for political participation for all citizens.

Abstract

A survey released by CSIS in September 2022 showed an increase in internet access for young voters from 2018 to 2022. The survey release showed a significant increase in access to social media as a source of information for young voters 19.5 per cent. Moreover, the CSIS survey found a condition where the interest of young Indonesians is currently very low in politics. On the other hand, hoaxes and misinformation can threaten young voters if they are not equipped with adequate political literacy and understanding. This desk study research was conducted to get an explanation from existing literature of how to utilise social media as a medium for the development of e-democracy amidst young people’s antipathy towards politics. Healthy social media free from intervention and arbitrariness of government policies can be a medium for young people’s political participation to foster e-democracy. The results of the desk study show that social media is possibly a means of political participation for youth and at the same time provides space for the growth of e-democracy with the prerequisite that the government is not abusive and offensive towards the use of digital media in Indonesia. This shows empirically that growing e-democracy needs not only a technological medium but a regime policy that supports e-democracy because digital media has become a living space attached to today’s young generation.

Abstract

This research investigates the strategic utilization of political communication by the Gerindra Party on the Twitter platform (X) leading up to the 2024 General Election in Indonesia. With a focus on the adoption of the ‘gemoy’ label by the public, subsequently becoming a framing tool for Prabowo, this shapes a positive image and significantly enhances his popularity. Through a comprehensive analysis of sentiment and engagement displays on social media, this study reveals the effectiveness of Gerindra’s political content in capturing public attention, signaling a paradigm shift in the dynamics of political communication in the digital era. The research adopts a quantitative methodology, employing a descriptive approach. Data collection involves direct interviews with the Public Relations Division of the Gerindra Party and utilizes netnography, combining online observations and content analysis of user interactions on Twitter (X) with the official Gerindra Party account. The results of the study demonstrate evolving emotional response dynamics over time, highlighting the adept use of framing strategies by the party. This research provides valuable insights into the transformative impact of social media on political communication, offering a deeper understanding of how political narratives are shaped and influence public opinion leading up to the general election.

Abstract

Although the New Order Regime (1966-1998) was widely known for its strict censorship and government control, there was a simultaneous rise in producing exploitation films with graphic and provocative images. This kind of cinema was exported internationally in the 1980s and re-released in the 2000s by transnational DVD distributors. This article analyzed the transformation of exploitation films, which were disregarded and undervalued by the Government, cultural elites, and cinema critics. It explored how these films became a battleground for the politics of taste and resulted in a series of contradictions within the political policies of the New Order. The study focused on policy studies, examining film-related policies (such as presidential decree and censorship regulations), and analyzed the findings by thoroughly examining the regulations’ trends, patterns, and anomalies. As a result, paradoxically, the New Order had to undertake trial and error towards the films that they were actually shunned, which resulted in the blooming of this kind of movie.

Abstract

ABSTRACT. This article delves into the impact and role of the lower middle class on Indonesia’s environmental landscape. Despite their social and economic marginalization, this demographic heavily relies on cheap, easily accessible fast fashion for clothing, leading to detrimental environmental consequences such as ecosystem degradation and pollution. This research was carried out by conducting a literature review through library research, where the data came from library data collection. This study further analyzes literature regarding socio-economic dynamics and environmental problems. This approach unveiled the lower middle class’s profound influence of fast fashion consumption on Indonesia’s environment. The research highlights the lower middle class’s pivotal role in fast fashion waste distribution, exacerbating environmental pollution. Hence, governmental intervention becomes imperative to regulate fast fashion production, manage waste, and restrict the influx of second-hand fast fashion businesses. The article concludes by emphasizing the lower middle class’s dual role as both major consumers and victims of global capitalism in the fast fashion industry, necessitating state protection through various policy measures. These include elevating product quality standards, ensuring fair labor practices, enhancing consumer protection, and controlling the influx of foreign fast fashion products. Ultimately, the study underscores the necessity of comprehensive governmental interventions to mitigate the environmental repercussions of fast fashion consumption, safeguarding both the lower middle class and Indonesia’s environment.

Abstract

“DPR - Musikal” is a highly acclaimed and ambitious musical theater video created by SkinnyIndonesian24 (Jovial da Lopez & Andovi da Lopez) that features a compelling environmental message. This piece depicts the contested meaning of nature and how it is influenced by different interests in the DPR. This research will examine the environmental politics discourses present in “DPR - Musikal” as an artistic creation that establishes a connection between environmental concerns and the notion of power. The research employed a qualitative approach and utilized Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) by Norman Fairclough. Data was gathered through video transcripts, direct interviews with informants (Jovial da Lopez), and additional documents. This research identifies two discourses in the piece: (1) sustainable development which reconciles the objectives of development agenda and environmental conservation, and (2) anti-capitalism which is identified through the narratives of land privatization, natural resources exploitation, and capitalism’s dominance in policymaking within the Indonesian parliament. These two discourses represent contrasting political thoughts, hence confirming incohesive solutions to the environmental problems. Although the producers condemn the dominance of business power and the exploitation of nature, they do not present a radical opposition to capitalism. Instead, they exhibit a lenient stance towards the development agenda, thus exemplifying the dominant influence of capitalist ideology within the musical theater production.

Abstract

Pesantren and East Java (Jatim) share a mutualistic, symbiotic relationship in political and cultural spheres. Pesantren is a byproduct of East Javan culture and a voting platform for regional elections. This study aims to ascertain the elements that voters on Madura Island consider when selecting a candidate in the 2018 East Java Governor Election. A mixed method comprising qualitative and quantitative elements and logistic regression data analysis techniques was employed to accomplish these research aims. According to the study’s findings, voters consider four elements: job programs, political parties, pesantren politics, and support from the contemporary Muslim community. Concurrently, these four elements impact the Khofifah-Emil candidate team’s outcome. According to the logistic regression findings, the Khofifah-Emil candidate team’s pesantren political strategy is to increase the number of graduate networks and pesantren support

Abstract

Today, creating a personal political brand is essential for regional heads to increase electability ahead of regional elections. This research explores how elected millennial regional heads create, develop, and communicate their political brands to increase their electability in West Sumatera, Indonesia. The authors used an exploratory approach and data collection through primary data obtained from semi-structured interviews and surveys using questionnaires. Secondary data includes journals, online newspapers, the official website of the General Elections Commission (KPU), the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), and social media. This research also used a quasi-qualitative design that goes through several stages, starting with exploring the research problem to confirm a new theory. Here, we show that they created personal political brands through the legacy and experiences of families and regional leaders. They also take several stages in building a personal political brand, namely conducting introspective investigations and evaluations through brand mantras offline and online traces. Later, their involvement in several organizations also became a determinant of political branding. The final stage in building this personal political brand is to evaluate the existing brand. Therefore, this research can be a reference for candidates for regional heads and legislators who are building their political brands. Given the limitations of this study, the authors suggest conducting follow-up research from another point of view of the political brand and its political marketing strategy.
