Abstract

Indonesia, 4 out of 10 teenagers suffer from anemia. Adolescent girls have a higher likelihood of experiencing anemia due to physical and psychological changes that affect greater nutritional needs. Some references associate anemia with differences in body mass index, thus further research is needed on the relationship between body mass index and the occurrence of anemia. This study aims to determine the relationship between Body Mass Index and the occurrence of Anemia in adolescent girls at MA Nurul Islam. The research design used in this study is cross-sectional. The population consisted of adolescent girls aged 15-18 years from MA Nurul Islam who had started menstruating. The study employed consecutive sampling technique, involving a total of 46 participants. The chi-square test results indicate no association between body mass index and the occurrence of anemia (p = 1.000; PR = 0.800; 95% CI = 0.178-3.587). Additionally, other characteristics such as menstrual duration, menstrual cycle, iron supplement consumption, and parental income also did not show significant associations with the occurrence of anemia among adolescent girls at MA Nurul Islam in this study. This study found no association between body mass index (BMI) and the incidence of anemia in adolescent girls at MA Nurul Islam. Other characteristics examined, such as menstrual duration, menstrual cycle, iron supplement consumption, and parental income, also did not show significant associations with the occurrence of anemia. Therefore, further research with different approaches is needed to evaluate other factors that may affect anemia in adolescent girls.

Abstract

Aspergillosis is an infection caused by the fungus Aspergillus , which typically affects individuals with weakened immune systems. One of the more serious forms of this infection is chronic pulmonary aspergillosis, which has a mortality rate of over 50%. This infection is estimated to affect approximately 3 million people worldwide, making it a significant global health issue. Accurate diagnosis and effective management are crucial to reducing morbidity and mortality. This article aims to explore the diagnosis and management of aspergillosis. The method employed is a literature review, with data obtained from various scientific articles through databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect, with a publication limit of the last 10 years. Diagnosis of aspergillosis is based on clinical manifestations and supported by laboratory, radiological, and mycological examinations. Management of aspergillosis includes the administration of oral corticosteroids, antifungal drugs, surgery, and immunomodulatory therapy. Diagnosis is established based on clinical symptoms and relevant supporting examinations, while treatment is adjusted according to the severity of the infection and the patient's overall health condition. The conclusion of this article emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and appropriate management in reducing the mortality rate associated with aspergillosis.

Abstract

Lignin is a component of crude fiber found in sago stems and is difficult to degrade. The aim is to compare lignolytic bacteria in sago pith, wet sago flour, and sago hampas in three (3) layers of waste piles. Samples were obtained from a traditional sago factory in Palopo City. Lignolytic bacteria were isolated using an M9 minimum agar supplemented with 1% lignin. The research parameters were the total lignolytic bacteria and the number of different colonies in each sample. The results showed that the most lignolytic bacteria and different colonies were found in the sago pith and the least in the middle layer of the sago hampas pile. The research results conclude that the sago pith can be an alternative source of lignolytic bacterial isolates. However, the ability of these lignolytic bacteria still needs to be tested and selected to obtain potential isolates.

Abstract

Aplastic anemia (AA) is a rare but serious hematologic disorder characterized by bone marrow failure, leading to pancytopenia and a reduction in all blood cell lines. This study aims to explore the definition, etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of AA. A comprehensive literature review was conducted using electronic databases such as PubMed, ProQuest, ScienceDirect, MDPI, and Google Scholar, focusing on studies and reviews related to AA. The findings indicate that the primary causes of AA include immune-mediated destruction of hematopoietic stem cells, with potential triggers such as drugs, chemicals, and autoimmune disorders. The diagnosis is confirmed through clinical evaluation, blood tests, and bone marrow biopsy. Treatment strategies consist of immunosuppressive therapy, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), and supportive care. In conclusion, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential for improving the prognosis of patients with AA.

Abstract

Comet fish (Carassius auratus) are one of the popular ornamental fish due to their beautiful colors and body shapes. The enhancement of comet fish colors is often done by adding feed ingredients that contain carotenoids, such as carrot powder and shrimp head powder. This study aims to analyze the effect of adding carrot powder and shrimp head powder on growth rate, survival rate, feed conversion ratio, feed utilization efficiency, and the coloration of comet fish. The study was conducted using four different feed treatments: (A) 50% commercial pellets + 50% carrot powder, (B) 50% commercial pellets + 50% shrimp head powder, (C) 50% commercial pellets + 25% carrot powder + 25% shrimp head powder, and (K) 100% commercial pellets (control). Each treatment was replicated three times, and observations were made over 40 days. The results showed that the addition of carrot powder and shrimp head powder did not significantly affect daily growth rate and feed utilization efficiency. However, there was a significant effect on absolute length growth, with treatment A providing the best results. The survival rate of comet fish was also not significantly affected by feed treatments. Color analysis indicated that the combination of carrot powder and shrimp head powder (treatment C) provided the best yellow color intensity. The addition of carrot powder and shrimp head powder in the feed can enhance the color intensity of comet fish, especially the yellow color. However, this treatment did not significantly affect daily growth rate and feed utilization efficiency. This study provides important information for ornamental fish breeders in improving the color quality of comet fish through natural feed.

Abstract

Indonesia is ranked third in the world after India and China with the largest number of smokers. LDL, triglyceride, total cholesterol, and HDL levels can all rise and fall due to smoking. While HDL serves to prevent the formation of atherosclerosis, high LDL levels can increase the risk of atherosclerosis. POCT (Point of Care Testing) is one procedure to check total cholesterol levels. The purpose of this study was to determine the difference in total cholesterol levels of male smokers and non-smokers aged 20-50 years in the Kopang Health Center work area in 2023. This study used a cross-sectional approach. The sampling technique in this study was purposive sampling. The results of this study showed that 63.3% were light smokers, 36.7% were moderate smokers and no heavy smokers. A total of 66.7% of smokers had normal total cholesterol levels while 33.3% experienced increased levels. Non-smokers as many as 96.7% had normal total cholesterol levels and 3.3% experienced increased levels. The results of the Chi-square test showed a P value of 0.010, which means P <0.05, so there is a significant difference between the cholesterol levels of smokers and non-smokers. The conclusion is that total cholesterol levels are normal in smoker respondents and total cholesterol levels are high in non-smoker respondents. The recommendation from this study is the importance of reducing cigarette consumption, controlling cholesterol levels regularly, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle to prevent a significant decrease in HDL levels.
