Abstract

A good education produces satisfactory learning outcomes. Creative learning requires teachers to be able to use all available resources so that students learn optimally. One of the efforts to maximize learning at home is the use of appropriate media for the conditions and situations at school. The teachers’ difficulty of using suitable media is a problem, especially the teaching of English words. Students still have insufficient vocabulary mastery; as a result, innovations and effort are required in order that students can improve their learning outcomes. One of the media that can be used is scrabble. This research used classroom action research method. The class action was carried out in 2 cycles. The initial cycle began with mapping the students' initial abilities and administering a test after using Scrabble. The second cycle was conducted by improving the teaching through scrabble. 21 students were involved in the classroom action research. The results showed that scrabble could improve English vocabulary learning outcomes. The average score in cycle 1 was 77.9 and in cycle 2 was 78.9. There was an increase for1 point. This result was expected to be improved as the students' vocabulary increased. Teachers should be able to use various and effective media so that students would not get bored studying in class. Learning outcomes increased along with the increase in students’ activities in the classroom.

Abstract

This paper was a theoretical exploration of proxemic discourse and the experience of cafe space as a transitional educational space. It was based on the development of a paradigm in the 21st century that has targeted the cafe sector and provided the potential to be converted into an alternative educational space, especially for the millennial generation, called students. This study theoretically explored based on the phenomena seen at Yoman Cafe in Surabaya, Indonesia, which often became an alternative learning place for students at Universitas Negeri Surabaya. The research was conducted through participatory observations during March 2021, and it was analyzed by carrying out theoretical exploration of proxemics, spatial experiences, and alternative spaces. The results showed that the cafe currently had a dual role which was known as hybrid. Apart from being a cafe with the traditional definition of being a place to eat, the current cafe also had a role as an alternative space. This was based on the achievement of several aspects to create a sense of comfort as a transitional educational space, namely table settings that provided private space for visitors, comfortable and comprehensive furniture, selection of materials, ambiance entertainment, lighting and acoustics, colors, and use of aesthetic elements.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has made students learn through online learning, which is different from face-to-face learning. As a result, several problems might occurred due to this changing both for students and teachers. Online learning caused students to experience various academic problems, such as unstable internet connections, difficulties in understanding the materials, having more assignments, additional costs for buying internet packages, being unfamiliar with the online learning system, and increasing parents’ burden to help children in learning. Some of the problems mentioned above became a stressor for students in taking online learning. Based on the phenomenon reported by BK teachers at schools, male students were less disciplined in managing time during online learning. it was found that many male students skipped the class during online learning; many assignments were not submitted on time. As a result, their academic achievement decreased. On the other hand, female students focused more on the online learning and they were more likely to stay at home, so that it was easier for them to adapt to online learning compared to male students. The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in the level of academic stress of male and female students. The research samples were 155 students and the instrument in this study was an academic stress scale. This study obtained that the validity of the instruments was 0.3 and the reliability was 0.875. Then, the data were analyzed by independent sample T-test and descriptive analysis. The results showed that there were differences in the academic stress of male students and female students, in which the academic stress of the male students was higher than the academic stress of the female students.

Abstract

This research and development aimed to achieve 2 main objectives: to develop a mind mapping model based on prophetic values in writing exposition texts, and to describe and discuss the profile of mind mapping model based on prophetic values in writing exposition texts. This model was developed by using 4D model (definition, design, development, and dissemination) which was modified to 3DI (definition, design, development, and implementation). This research was conducted in the academic year 2019/2020 at a high school in Bandung. The instruments of this research were questionnaires and observation sheets that fulfilled the validity and reliability requirements. The initial product was tested on a limited trial in X IPA SMA Negeri 1 Baleendah Bandung. Then, the revised product was tested extensively in 2 classes, namely X IPA-3 and X IPS-5. The last procedure in this research was the dissemination of the final product prototype, which was teaching materials entitled Mind Mapping Based on Porphetic Values: Teaching Materials for Writing Exposition Texts for Grade X SMA/MA. This teaching material consisted of 30 pages, A4, time new roman, 12 automatic spaces outside the start page of 7. Ho was rejected for the paired sample t test because the sig. 0.037 < p = 0.05 for class X IPA-3 and the sig. 0.037 < p = 0.05 for class X IPS-5. This product was believed to contribute to the process of learning writing exposition texts at high schools. After that, as users, the Indonesian teachers scored in mode 4 for a scale of 1 to 4 for the 4 feasibility indicators. The score mode of 4 also occured in the assessment given by the expert team.
