Abstract

This article discusses the eco-sufism that Hamka built in his book Tafsir al-Azhar. This is motivated by the issue of environmental damage caused by, among other things, the anthropocentric paradigm, namely the notion that views humans as the center of the universe and has the right to exploit nature without considering its sustainability. Meanwhile, the hallmark of Hamka's interpretation of the verses of the Qur'an, which has a Sufi tendency, is trying to respond to environmental damage by offering sustainable environmental conservation efforts. Using a descriptive-explorative thematic method, Hamka built five efforts in preserving the environment with a Sufism approach, namely: paying attention to nature will strengthen faith in Allah; natural order is a form of God's existence; contemplation of nature will cause ‘isyq (longing) to God; managing nature as a provision to return to the presence of God; and being grateful for the results of natural resources by sharing them with others. In the interpretation of the verses about the five efforts, it appears that Hamka's interp retation tries to respond to environmental damage with a Sufi approach, which is seen as contributing to environmental conservation in a sustainable manner. Hamka provides a paradigm for balancing human rights and obligations to nature based on the holy book al-Qur'an so that it can be used as a guide for all Indonesians to realize a polite and moderate Islam towards nature by paying attention to environmental conservation.

Abstract

Humans have an essential role and function as caliphs on this earth. However, the figure of the caliph as a leader has begun to decline. This is due to the lack of knowledge about a caliph’s nature and the obligations that must be carried out. This library research will explore the concept of caliphs in the plural and singular forms found in the Qur'an based on an analysis of thematic interpretation studies and its relevance as a leader in Islam. The results of this study state that the meaning of the khalifah in the Qur'an can be clarified into three, namely: the meaning of the khalifah as a general leader for all human beings, the meaning of the khalifah as a leader that is specific or addressed to a nation or generations, and the meaning of the caliph which is individual, namely to the Prophet David. In addition, this paper can also provide insight into the values or principles of the Shari'a contained in the meaning of caliph so that it can be a reference and is expected to be a motivation to produce a leader who understands the concept of khalifah and can implement his rights and obligations.

Abstract

This article aims to probe the discourse surrounding the debate between classical and modern interpretations of the Quran and the factors contributing to these interpretation styles' formation and evolution. The first interpretation is considered textualist and does not use much of an outside scientific approach inherited from Islam. In contrast, the modern interpretation is enunciated to depart from the traditional Islamic scholarly traditions and employ social science approaches. The research was conducted through a library research approach, analyzing classical tafsir manuscripts and modern academic research. The study extrapolated that the evolution of interpretation is shaped by the tendencies and interests of interpreters, impacted by their worldview and cultural history. As a result, the emerging interpretation styles enclose classical-literalist, theological, and modern-rationalist.

Abstract

This study aims to collect, present, and analyze the Qur’ān’s talk about the guidance of Qur’ān, in Sayyid Quṭb’s al-Ẓilāl. To accomplish them, the researcher employed the inductive approach by collecting Qur’ānic verses that talk about the guidances of Qur’ān, and then locating the commentaries of the author of al-Ẓilāl on those verses. It was followed by the analytical approach by analyzing those collected verses, and finally the deductive approach by concluding issues that emerge from those examined verses relating to the Qur’ān’s talk about the guidance of Qur’ān. The researcher gathered several findings, among them: 1) The term of “al-Huda” in the Holy Qur’an has two meanings. The first, “Al-Hudā” in the sense of guidance, clarification, showing the path of truth, and clarifying the argument, and the second: “Al-Hudā” is the grace of God with success and infallibility for the servant. 2) Sayyid Qutb believes that the general or innate guidance is the greatest trust that God Almighty bestowed on all people, and that the Qur’anic guidance is the core of the miracle of the Qur’an. 3) The condition for attaining the guidance of the Qur’an is that a person has a sincere intention and corrects his aspiration when dealing with it. The second is looking and contemplating its noble verses, universal and legal. 4) The way of the Holy Qur’an in proving guidance is through exhortation and remembrance, which came in a variety of ways. 5) The goal of guidance in the views of the Qur’an is social change, and that is in two stages. The first stage is family readiness, and the second stage is social solidarity.

Abstract

This article is based on the human paradigm which recognizes that the Prophet Ibrahim was the father of three samawī religions. This paradigm influences the ideology of religious communities. The researcher semantically interprets the ḥanîf sentence by examining the meaning of hanīf based on its history. The study concludes that ḥanîf means someone who turns away from evil, leans towards goodness and truth, always turns himself towards the Qibla of Baitul Haram, sincere in his worship, accepting all commands of Allah, and steadfast in the way of Allah, obeying all commandments without the slightest deviation. The meaning of ḥanîf therefore proves the monotheism of Prophet Ibrahim AS and his complete adherence to the religion of Allah.

Abstract

This article discusses vernacularization in Malay-Language Tafsir by examining Tafsir Nur al-Ihsan by Syaikh Muhammad Sa'id al-Qadhi al-Kedahi as an analytical study. This oldest tafsir was written in 1344H/1926M during the reign of the 21st Sultan of Kedah by a Qadhi in Kedah Malaysia, as well as the first Malaysian mufassir who interpreted the Qur'an in Javanese with Arabic alphabet letters. This research focuses on three main problems: how vernacularization is applied in the book of Tafsir Nur al-Ihsan in the linguistic, writing, and interpretation aspects. Through the theory of vernacularization, this research explains the implementation of vernacularization related to the phenomenon and the facts of the text that developed in the book of Tafsir Nur al-Ihsan. By using a qualitative approach through the literature study method, the results of this study show that; First, vernacularization in the linguistic aspect through the use of local languages commonly used by the local community in the use of the word "sembahyang" and the designation "lembu" for naming surah al-Baqarah. Second is vernacularization in Malay writing using the Arabic-Jawi script (pegon). Third, vernacularization is found in the interpretation of QS. al-Maidah verse 38 and QS. Al-Baqarah verse 17, which dominantly reflects aspects of locality such as the expression, morality, and character of the Malaysian Muslim community, as well as the lives and habits of Malaysian Muslims, especially in the Kedah area.

Abstract

This article analyzes Ibn ʿĀshūr's understanding of astronomical verses in his tafsir al-Taḥrīr wa al-Tanwīr. Indeed, the Qur'an contains scientific cues that encourage the Ummah’s development and progress in science and technology. The Qur'an mentions the heavens and the earth, the sun, the moon and its rotation, east and west, galaxies, stars and planets, the symptoms of day and night, dawn and dusk, darkness and light, the sea, rivers, springs, wind, thick clouds containing rain and thin clouds, lightning and rain. The subject of this study is described using thematic and historical approaches, and the research method is library research. The results indicate that Ibn ʿĀshūr uses a scientific approach to understand astronomical verses in the Qur'an, allowing the understanding of the relationship between natural phenomena and theological aspects of God's Power. His contribution to the science of contemporary exegesis is to encourage the study of scientific facts in interpreting the Quran and take lessons from the creation of the universe. Ibn ʿĀshūr emphasizes using other sciences to explore the meaning of the Quran while still following the rules of exegesis. This approach strengthens the theological dimension of exegesis and helps to facilitate understanding on the theological implications of glorifying the Power of God as the Creator and Ruler of the Universe.

Abstract

Religion, on the one hand, is something sacred, but on the other hand, there is a phenomenon wherein it is used to earn profits for business. It appears that religion has turned into a marketing point that alters the sacred nature of the essence of religion itself, with religious symbols serving as a way to attract consumers' interest in purchasing goods. This study describes the phenomenon of religious commodification in light of the Quran. The qualitative research method was used in the present study. Primary data were collected from business owners near Tuan Guru Babussalam Langkat's graveyard area. The field research data were analyzed from the viewpoint of the Qur'an. The findings indicated that Babussalam, Langkat has certain aspects of religious commodification. The components of commercialization include honouring intellectuals and requesting favours, or tabarruk. According to the Qur’an, the practice of commercializing religion is acceptable because no verses condemn the actions of the residents of Babussalam village.
