Abstract

The study of love in the Qur’an has predominantly focused on its psychological dimension, viewing it as a manifestation of human emotions. However, the Qur’an places love in a broader context, emphasizing the centrality of God and transcending conventional subject-object relationships. Notably, the verses addressing love in the Qur’an often overlook its multifaceted dimensions. The contemporary discourse on reinterpreting religion through the lens of love underscores the need to comprehend the implications of love’s interpretation in exegesis books. Grounded in this context, this research aims to unravel the dimensions and implications of love’s meaning in Makārim Shīrāzī’s exegesis, al-Amthal. Employing an interpretative approach, the findings reveal four dimensions proposed by Makārim Shīrāzī: firstly, a philosophical dimension rooted in the dichotomy of genuine and illusory love; secondly, a religious dimension positioning love as the “substance of religion”; thirdly, a social dimension where love forms the basis for tranquility (iṭmi‘nān) and societal peace (sakan); and finally, a psychological dimension portraying love as an emotion existing alongside hatred. These dimensions bear implications for issues related to divinity, prophethood, social relations, and tolerance. This research contributes to refining the interpretation of love in Islam, fostering a nuanced understanding that transcends exclusive and extreme religious perspectives.

Abstract

This article discusses the difference in the reading of the word Lāmastum QS. Al-Nisa’: verse 43. It has resulted in the formation of two meanings; Shafi'i chose the recitation of Lamastum and stated that touching women invalidates ablution, Hanafi accepted the recitation of Lāmastum and declared that touching women does not invalidate ablution. Others have opinions for and against these two views. This research, which has been carried out in an analytic-descriptive method, has examined the difference in the readings of the word Lāmastum in this verse. The results of this study show that the difference in the reading of Lāmastum-Lamastum does not lead to a difference in meaning, but what causes different jurisprudential views of this verse is paying no attention to the ironical meaning and misunderstanding of the interpretation, which ultimately caused some translators suffice for the literal meaning and did not consider the ironic meaning of the word, and therefore, some English translators of the Holy Qur’an are not immune to this mistake.

Abstract

This research presents a new view of online acculturation, namely ngaji bandongan, which focuses on studying Gus Baha tafsīr jalalyn on the YouTube platform in reviewing the NU tafsīr account. A field study guides this analysis by looking at the current acculturation in social media, where ngaji bandongan is a permanent tradition in studying the yellow book. This research uses a qualitative methodology using ethnography to describe and build the social culture of a society. The theory used to analyze this is the theory of cultural acculturation, which, in this case, is ngaji bandongan. The data comes from a literature review, document study, and in-depth observation. The results in this analysis are in several aspects, namely the way of delivery of Gus Baha who uses language that is easy to understand and humorous, making it attractive to the younger generation. The content of Gus Baha's tafsīr Jalālyn study is a new paradigm in a tradition adapted to digital platforms to reach a wider audience, especially the younger generation. This shows that turrets remain relevant and contextual in the digital age.

Abstract

This study explores the concept of Barzakh in the Qur'an, focusing on Surah Al-Mu'minun verses 99-100 and 46. The research aims to understand the differences between the grave and Barzakh, whether humans sleep or are punished in barzakh, and the spiritual implications of these concepts. The novelty of this study lies in addressing the spiritual purpose of Barzakh as a 'checkpoint,' a topic not yet comprehensively examined in scholarly journals. Although Quraish Shihab has extensively discussed this in various YouTube content, it has not been systematically analyzed in academic literature. This study is a library research project employing a qualitative approach. The methodology involves descriptive analysis and content analysis of Quraish Shihab's interpretations, particularly his exegesis in Tafsir Al-Misbah. The findings conclude that Barzakh is a waiting realm (checkpoint) where rewards or sins from the world continue to affect the deceased. The spiritual significance of Barzakh underscores the importance of one's life record, encouraging the increase of good deeds and the avoidance of sinful deeds.

Abstract

This article discusses the integration of hermeneutics in Quranic studies. Some Muslim scholars consider hermeneutics to be one of the partners in interpreting the Quran. One of the contemporary Muslim intellectuals who has quite influential hermeneutical ideas is Bintu Syāṭī'. The research in this paper is classified as qualitative literature research with a socio-historical approach and uses Gadamer's theory to analyze the influence of Bintu Syāṭī''s hermeneutical concept. The results of this study conclude two things, namely: first, Bintu Shāṭī''s method of interpretation in her tafsir is influenced by her education and her husband Amīn al-Khūlī so that Bintu Shāṭī''s method in interpreting the Qur'an leans towards literary studies to reveal the bayani of the Qur'an. Second, Bintu Syāṭī' is one of the Muslim hermeneutic figures who adopts the quasi-objective hermeneutic genre.

Abstract

Al-Qur’an is the most miracle of the Prophet Muhammad who has a various forms of miracles (wujūh al-i'jāz), one of them is the “Audio Miracle” or al-I'jāz al-Ṣautī. Therefore, this research aims to present and analyze the discourse of i'jāz al-Sautī in the Qur’an. To achieve this, researchers use a historical approach by studying the history of the revelation of the Qur’an and its transmission to humanity, then this research uses an analytical approach to several examples of verses containing i'jāz al-Sautī in a contemporary perspective, and finally, the research uses an istinbāṭi approach, namely formulating a study in conclusion form. This research obtained several findings, First, I'jāz al-Sautī is the most visible form of i'jāz of the Qur’an, because it can be felt by all readers and listeners, not only limited to Arabs, but for all humans. Second, i'jāz al-Sautī is an important form of i'jāz which was initially conveyed from Allah to Jibril as. and then to the propet Rasulullah using the oral voice method (musyāfahah). Third, among the secrets of the i'jāz al-Sautī is the beautiful and detailed arrangement between the harmony of the sounds that provide comfort and tranquility for the soul and the harmony of the meaning contained therein. Fourth, Umar bin Khattab’s islamic event is the most obvious proof of the influence of the sound of the sentences of the Qur’an on the soul of the listener.

Abstract

The rapid development of technology has led to the emergence of digital Qur'an and Tafsir applications. This study focuses on the Learn Qur'an Tafsir application, chosen for its features that explore various themes supported by references to Qur'anic verses and their interpretations. The research specifically examines the topic of women’s attire, a subject that remains a prominent and evolving discussion. The dynamic growth of the fashion industry has influenced the styles of Muslim women’s attire, addressing issues such as dressing styles, the boundaries of aurat, and the selection of materials and colors. This study aims to uncover how women's issues are represented on a Tafsir platform, focusing on the Learn Qur'an Tafsir application. Using an epistemological framework of Tafsir and a descriptive-analytical approach, the study investigates the depiction of women’s attire within this application. The findings indicate that the topic of women’s attire in the Learn Qur'an Tafsir application is categorized into several specific subtopics, including Women Lengthen Their Clothes, Tabarruj, Hijab, Covering Women's Faces, Waiver of Hijab Against Parents, Jewelry, and Women’s attire. Each subtopic is analyzed by referencing related Qur'anic verses, word translations, verse translations, and interpretations from credible Tafsir sources such as the Qur'an, the translation by the Ministry of Religion, and other reputable Tafsir texts. A thematic method is employed to organize the analysis. The study finds coherence and pragmatic validity in the interpretations but identifies a lack of correspondence truth in the application.

Abstract

Every individual inevitably encounters pressures, conflicts, and social relationship challenges throughout their lives. While some individuals are able to navigate these difficulties successfully, others may struggle, leading to prolonged mental stress. In severe cases, this can manifest in self-harming behaviors, including Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI). To prevent such behaviors, effective self-healing strategies are essential. For Muslims, one source of inspiration for self-healing is the tauhid-based approach exemplified by Prophet Yusuf, who endured significant trials from his brothers and his environment. This study explores the concept of tauhid-based self-healing as demonstrated by Prophet Yusuf to understand how he managed to avoid prolonged mental stress. Employing a descriptive-analytical method, the study examines the narrative of Prophet Yusuf, highlighting his adversities—such as being thrown into a well, falsely accused of theft, and slandered with adultery—and his strategies to overcome them. The findings reveal that Prophet Yusuf employed tauhid-based self-healing through self-compassion, compensation, mindfulness, and open-mindedness, providing valuable insights into addressing NSSI.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the mechanisms and authority underlying K.H. Maimun Zubair’s interpretations as reflected in Tafsir Safīnah Kallā Saya’lamūn, a work documented by his student, Ismail Al-Ascholīy. Mbah Moen’s interpretations are often perceived as deeply intertwined with contextual nuances, yet the factors influencing these interpretations and the processes involved in their formulation remain insufficiently examined. This research seeks to bridge this gap by uncovering the intricate processes behind his interpretative approach, particularly concerning contemporary themes. Employing qualitative methods with a literature-based analysis, the study reveals that multifaceted dimensions, including historical and psychological contexts shape Mbah Moen’s interpretations. His engagement with a conducive intellectual environment fosters a contextual interpretative framework that aligns with modern phenomena. Furthermore, his interpretations are deeply rooted in the pesantren tradition, which significantly informs his intellectual orientation. Within this framework, the authority of the Qur’an, historical narratives, and classical exegetical works remains pivotal. Nonetheless, Mbah Moen adeptly integrates modern perspectives into his interpretations, demonstrating a capacity to contextualize Qur’anic texts in ways that transcend conventional exegetical paradigms.

Abstract

This article examines the diverse public receptions towards the tradition of reciting four selected surahs—Surah Yāsīn, Surah As-Sajdah, Surah Al-Wāqi'ah, and Surah Al-Mulk—during the burial ceremony in Kampung Tengah, Enok Village, Enok District, as a form of practicing the Qur'an in everyday life. Qur'anic studies encompass not only its meaning and interpretation but also the re-actualization of its guidance in societal practices, including traditions and customs. This study aims to describe the reception of the Kampung Tengah community regarding the practice of these four selected surahs in local funeral ceremonies. Using qualitative methods and a living Qur'an approach, this study focuses on describing community receptions of local traditions or social phenomena. The research identifies three key findings. First, the socio-anthropological aspect: this tradition represents a habitual practice among Kampung Tengah residents in conducting burials, including the recitation of these surahs as an expression of solidarity among Muslims. Second, the socio-historical aspect: the tradition originated as a local custom initiated by a Bugis scholar, H. Dullah bin H. Ismail, based on the teachings of Tuan Guru Abdurrahman Shiddiq Al-Banjari in the book Perukunan. Third, the spiritual aspect: the community believes that reciting these surahs brings various virtues (fadhilah) for both the deceased and the living. This article contributes to understanding the relevance of local traditions within Islamic teachings and offers an academic contribution to Qur'anic interpretation studies, particularly the living Qur'an field.
