Abstract

Agus Mustofa is a controversial figure because his thoughts are considered deviant. Even so, he remains productive in writing and interpreting verses from the Al-Qur’an on his YouTube channel, which has hundreds of thousands of subscribers. Agus Mustofa’s academic background is nuclear engineering, not Qur’ānic exegesis. This study examines the sources, methods, validity, and implications of Agus Mustofa’s interpretations. It employs interpretive epistemological theory and mass communication theory to accomplish these objectives. Data is collected from a Agus Mustofa’s YouTube channel, Sufistic Islamic Studies. The results show that first, the sources used by Agus Mustofa are tafsir bil ma’tsur and tafsir bil ra’yi. Second, the method used is mauḍūʿī with a scientific approach. Third, the validity of the data obtained through coherence is inconsistent using interpretive sources, whereas correspondence and pragmatism are new in the world of interpretation. Fourth, Agus Mustofa’s interpretation provides positive cognitive, affective, and behavioral impacts on society.

The concept of betrayal from the perspective of the Qur'an emphasizes the forms of betrayal and the implications of the verses offered by the Qur'an in dealing with these acts of betrayal. The objectives of this research include three, namely, knowing the terms related to betrayal. Second, know the forms and factors that cause betrayal. Third, know solutions to prevent treasonous acts. This research uses a qualitative analysis method, collecting data from Al-Quran verses related to betrayal. Data was analyzed using a textual and contextual approach to understand the meaning, context, and message conv, eyed by the Al-Quran regarding treasonous acts. The data analysis technique used in this research is the qualitative analysis based on the views of the Book of Tafsir Al Misbah by Prof. Quraish Shihab, Tafsir Ibnu Katsir, and Tafsir, Kemenag. The results of this research show that the terms of betrayal that can be identified are munafiq, murtad, disobedient, ghulul, kadzib, and the factors that cause traitorous behavior include hubb, hasad, khasam, baghyu, and anniayah.

Abstract

Social media provides a platform for the concise and creative framing of religious narratives, often incorporating captivating visual elements and synoptic explanations through memes. Nevertheless, employing memes to mediatize the Qur’an frequently results in misleading interpretations. This paper scrutinizes the misinterpretation of Yusuf: 28 and Al-Nisa’: 76 in a viral meme circulating on social media, which asserts that “the deceitfulness of women surpasses that of the devil.” Three key inquiries are posed: a) How are these two verses interpreted and presented in meme form? b) What factors contribute to the deviations from the original meaning? c) What impact does the mediatization of this Qur’anic verse in the meme have in fostering a negative perception of women? By leveraging Ahmad Rafiq’s Qur’anic reception and Gary R. Bunt’s cyber Islamic environments theory in conjunction with qualitative research methodologies, this study identifies a disparity in the meme’s interpretation of the Qur’anic verse when compared to traditional and contemporary tafsir (Qur’anic exegesis). The visual composition of meme content is intrinsically linked to the prevailing trend in digital information delivery, which prioritizes simplicity and leverages psychological factors through elements such as captions and color choices. Furthermore, this research underscores the implication that excessive mediatization can lead to distortions in religious narratives, as evident in these memes that employ Qur’anic verses to unfairly stereotype women. In reality, the depicted report conveys a profound cynicism, suggesting that the potential flaws of women are even more significant than those of the most vile creature, Satan.

Abstract

This article discusses Thaifur Ali Wafa's response to the polemics of Islamic theology in Madura through his monumental work Tafsir Firdaws al-Naʿīm. As a pesantren cleric and structural NU figure, Thaifur represents Madurese clerical authority. In his career, he provides critical responses to Muktazilah thoughts, including such issues as the inability to see God in heaven, God's obligation to do good, and God's promises and threats. This library research uses the content analysis method. Using the sociology of knowledge approach, this study finds that Thaifur Ali Wafa's response to Muktazilah thought reflects the strong influence of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah ideology. This ideology was formed due to Madurese cultural factors and Thaifur Ali Wafa's scientific genealogy. This article is significant in illustrating the network and intellectual relationship between Nusantara Muslims and Middle Eastern scholars, which is crucial in the writing of Islamic scholarly works in the archipelago, including in Madura. It reflects the complexity and diversity of Islamic thought in the region, which is influenced by intercultural interactions and intellectual exchanges that have taken place over centuries.

Abstract

The dichotomy of opinions on women's work in the public and domestic spheres and the gender equality discourse have become interesting issues in Islamic studies. In addressing the activities and roles of women, some groups make al-Aḥzāb verse 33 the basis for women's obligation to stay at home and prohibit them from participating in activities in the public domain. This qualitative library research employs the hermeneutic approach. It aims to obtain the contextual meaning in al-Aḥzāb verse 33 through the theory of Quranic hermeneutics developed by a Muslim intellectual, Ābid al-Jābirī. The hermeneutics promoted by al-Jabiri aim to make the moral values contained in the Qur'an be implied in the fabric of society and harmony with the current context. To obtain an objective and comprehensive interpretation of a text, al-Jabiri takes two steps. The first step is to explore the concept of al-faṣl and the second is to explore the concept of al-waṣl. The results suggest that women are free to partake in the public sphere within certain restrictions specified by Islamic law. However, women's activities in the public sphere should not be an excuse to neglect their role in the domestic sphere.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to provide greater information on Tafsir Maqashidi's research on the rights of individuals with sensory impairments. persons with sensory disabilities have the right to the same treatment as normal persons in their situation as mukallaf. The descriptive-analytical method is being used in this library research study. Research information relevant to the topic has been gathered from books, journals, fiqh books, and other sources. The findings showed that the major goals (maqashid) of the Al-Qur’anic verses addressing individuals with sensory impairments are to uphold religious precepts, acknowledge their existence in their human capacities, and emphasize the significance of treating them with inclusivity. These services, which are all offered to individuals with sensory impairments, are founded on equality, justice, accountability, and human values. For people with sensory disabilities to participate fully in religious, educational, and social events, accessibility and facilities must be provided. This is how the goals and values expressed in the verses that relate to them are to be implemented. Serving as a prayer leader, leading congregational prayers at the mosque, learning science, having the Al-Qur’an available in braille, and so forth are several instances.

Abstract

This article describes and analyses the tafhkīm and tarqīq of rā’ and lām in the recitations of Ḥafṣ and Warsh. It is library study and employs the descriptive-analytical method. The study shows that (1) tafkhīm and tarqīq are discussed in the science of qirā'āt in relation to the rule on the pronunciation of rā' and lām; (2) tafkhīm and tarqīq of rā’ and lām differ between Ḥafṣ and Warsh. This study contributes to the qirā’āt and ʿUlūm al-Qur’ān literature. It removes some doubt among Muslims about the correct pronunciation of both letters, as both recitations indeed were narrated by the Messenger of Allah to his companions by means of mushāfahah. The study may become an essential reference for Muslims in understanding the various methods by which the Qur’ān is recited.

Abstract

The terms al-Zulumat and al-Nur, which are both derived from the Qur'an, are discussed in this article. There is a strong relationship between these two phrases. When these two words are mentioned together, the word al-Zulumat always appears in the plural form while the word Al-Nur always appears in the Singular form, which shows that this Qur'anic phrase identifies the plural or singular form based on the source or origin of the word. In research on the lafadz al-Zulumat and al-Nur, the Munasabah verses approach which does not delve beyond the meaning of a word explanation is frequently utilized. As a result, the author's methodological strategy for conducting this field research comprises a semantic-linguistic analysis of both phrases. This literature study uses qualitative research methods, by collecting various data from books, journal articles and other relevant documents related to the semantic topic of the Al-Qur'an. The aim of this research is to examine the secrets contained in the words al-Zulumat which are often compared with the words al-Nur. The research conducted found that these two expressions combined signify the sequential emergence of direction as well as the process of creation. This article is important for exploring the linguistic and rhetorical special that exists in Al-Qur'an phrases, especially in the words al-Zulumat and Al-Nur.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to answer the thesis presented by Luxenberg. He states that the Qur'an is not Arabic. He assumes that the Qur'an has errors in its writing. The letters develop and are not by the beginning of its revelation. The tradition that changed from memorized tradition to written tradition also has a high possibility of being wrong, according to Luxenberg. This research uses the theory of interpretation criticism because what Luxenberg states as an orientalist is very different from the Islamic scientific tradition. The data analysis in this research uses literature data. Luxenberg's statement was analyzed and criticized using Islamic science and Palaeography. By using the theory and data analysis, it is established that Luxenberg's thesis is erroneous because the wrong writing of the Qur'an will never happen, either with the paleographic study presented by Luxenberg or with the study of the History of the Qur'an from the time of the Prophet until codification.

Abstract

This article examines how to respond and deal with hate speech through two verses of the Quran, namely al-Ḥujurāt (49:11) and al-Anʿām (6:108). The widespread dissemination of hate speech across various platforms has raised concerns. This activity not only has the potential to incite discriminatory behavior and provoke violence, but the larger issue at hand is the threat of national disintegration and social disharmony. Therefore, using Fazlur Rahman's double movement method, a socio-historical contextual analysis of the period during which these verses were revealed is conducted to uncover the moral message of the Quran and contextualize it for the present day. The results of this study indicate that Surah Al-Ḥujurāt (49:11) and Surah al-Anʿām (6:108) emphasize the importance of promoting politeness and respect in communication, by refraining from using derogatory titles or nicknames that may demean or offend others. It also stresses the importance of self-control to avoid engaging in spreading hate speech, both in verbal and online interactions. Additionally, responsible use of social media is highlighted, prioritizing healthy discussions and dialogues to prevent online conflicts that could disrupt societal harmony.
