Abstract

This research aims to establish test indicators corresponding to CEFR-based Arabic language proficiency levels, especially for beginner levels (A1 and A2). This research uses content analysis methods to develop CEFR-based Arabic language proficiency test indicators. This research was also carried out by reviewing several sources, including the CEFR framework and several previous studies on the design of Arabic language proficiency tests. The CEFR-based Arabic language proficiency test indicators were created by considering descriptions of Arabic grammatical competence in nahwu (syntaxis), sharf (morphological), balaghah (rhetoric) science, and ‘ilm dilalah (semantics). The design of CEFR-based Arabic language proficiency test indicators can help overcome difficulties in measuring Arabic language proficiency for students in Indonesia. Using the CEFR framework, this research offers an alternative solution for developing a curriculum and test design appropriate to the level of Arabic language proficiency. This research concludes that the design of CEFR-based Arabic language proficiency test indicators can help improve the quality of Arabic language learning and ensure that students have abilities that comply with international standards.

Abstract

Limited vocabulary mastery can interfere with the fluency of the Arabic language learning process. However, not many studies describe the causes or factors that can affect vocabulary mastery in detail and deal with this problem in the Malaysian education system. This case study explores further the main factors that can influence the mastery of Arabic vocabulary at the secondary school level. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with six experienced teachers from four National Religious Secondary Schools (SMKA) in Kedah. Research interview data was analyzed thematically using NVivo 14 software. The study's findings show five main factors affecting vocabulary mastery: self, teacher's approach, syllabus, environment, and the Arabic language program. Based on these five factors, the self-factor is the most important and can affect how well students learn vocabulary. It includes internal factors (belief, interest, and attitude) and external factors (vocabulary use and learning strategies). Thus, teachers are suggested to focus on the students’ self-factor from internal and external aspects to help improve vocabulary mastery. It is believed that encouraging and promoting the various learning strategies, students will be more proactive and creative in enhancing their mastery of new vocabulary.

Abstract

One of the key characteristics of academic writing is its precision in expressing facts and ideas and its avoidance of subjective impressions, rhetorical styles, and ambiguous formulations. When students write their theses in foreign languages, proficiency in a foreign language is essential for high-quality academic writing. Numerous errors may be found in the theses without such proficiency, undermining the students’ efforts. This study adopted a descriptive-analytical approach to quantitatively and qualitatively analyse the writing errors found in six master's theses completed by International Islamic University Malaysia students. Among the study’s key findings is that language is the most suitable domain for applying the criterion of right and wrong. Writing errors stem from two primary sources: internal within the language and external from other languages. Moreover, these errors may intersect or overlap.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the level of reading anxiety in Arabic among university students in the East Coast region of Malaysia. The study used a quantitative approach through a cross-sectional survey design, with a sample of 132 students from Sultan Zainal Abidin University and Universiti Malaysia Kelantan. Data was collected using the Foreign Language Reading Anxiety Scale (FLRAS) questionnaire adapted from Mikami's study (2019). The results showed that the students' reading anxiety level was generally moderate, with three main anxiety dimensions emerging: unfamiliar texts (high level), linguistic distance (high level), and confidence/enjoyment in reading (high level). The study revealed that unfamiliar vocabulary and grammar constitute the most significant source of anxiety, followed by difficulties related to linguistic and cultural distance between the mother tongue and the Arabic language, in addition to the impact of low self-confidence and fear of making mistakes. The study recommends adopting effective teaching strategies to enhance basic language skills, bridging the cultural gap, building confidence and enhancing motivation through a supportive learning environment, and using technology and multimedia to make Arabic reading more enjoyable and interesting.

Abstract

This study aims to develop teaching strategies for translating Indonesian-Arabic from a cultural perspective that includes translating strategy documents, methods, procedures, and translating rules and factors that encourage students majoring in Choosing Translating strategies. This research methodology is descriptive qualitative research; data were sourced from 45 students who were randomly selected at three universities in the Department of Arabic Language Education in Indonesia, namely Antasari State Islamic University Banjarmasin, University of Qur’an Amuntai, and University of Darul Hijrah Martapura. Interviews and documentation search techniques were used to collect the data. The result of this study is the teaching of translating Indonesia to Arabic led to literal translation according to grammatical and morphological rules, without attention to cultural understanding, because many Arabic languages no equivalent in Indonesia, and understand the culture of both Indonesian and Arabic, and are influenced by ways of thinking in the Indonesian language system, so that most students follow the way of thinking in Indonesian when translating.

Abstract

The university has a language center (UPB/PPB) that develops the foreign language skills of students, lecturers, and workers. It has many programs and the curriculum. This research aims to describe the curriculum of standardized Arabic foreign language learning in Language centers at state Islamic universities in Indonesia based on a communicative approach and a standardized test of Foreign Language. This research is qualitative field research with subject purposive, namely universities that fit the scope of this research; its four Universities are Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang State Islamic University, Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta State Islamic University, Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta State Islamic University, and Sumatra Utara State Islamic University. The data are the curriculum, communicative approach, and standardized Arabic language tests for TOAFL. Analyze data by reducing, presenting, and concluding. The result is that the Language Center of the State Islamic University in Indonesia indicates a curriculum based on centralized and decentralized. It has focused on implementing the TOAFL as a standard Arabic language test by the systems and regulations of each university. In learning Arabic, the implementation of approaches refers to systems language center that is by this communicative approach, including all one system, student-centered learning, and behavioral Approach, also the implementation of variant methods including eclectic method, direct method, active learning, brain-based learning, problem-solving, discussions, conversation, and presentation.

Abstract

Listening skills in Arabic are a gateway to acquiring knowledge and a means of learning and communication. However, many preparatory year students in the Faculties of Islamic Sciences in Turkey complain about its difficulty and suffer from weak listening skills for various reasons. Modern studies in foreign language education emphasize the necessity for learners to possess learning strategies for each language skill due to their significant importance in developing these skills and overcoming many problems and difficulties that learners may encounter. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the learning strategies specific to listening skills among Arabic learners in the preparatory year at some Turkish universities and investigate the impact of variables (gender, place of study) on their use of these strategies. The study was conducted on a sample of 127 randomly selected male and female preparatory year students nearing the end of their year at several universities for the academic year 2023-2024. To achieve the study's objectives, the researcher used the descriptive-analytical method and developed a questionnaire that included a graduated scale measuring the extent to which learners use these strategies, consisting of 20 strategies distributed across three fields: 1. Pre-listening strategies, 2. While-listening strategies, 3. post-listening strategies. The study showed that preparatory year students practice pre-listening and while-listening strategies highly, while post-listening strategies are practiced moderately. The study revealed statistically significant differences between the averages of the sample individuals attributed to gender, in favor of females, in using pre-listening and while-listening strategies, but no differences in post-listening strategies. The study also showed statistically significant differences between the averages of the sample individuals attributed to the university, with Sabahattin Zaim University ranking first, followed by Sultan Mehmet Fatih University in pre-listening and while-listening strategies. As for post-listening strategies, Sabahattin Zaim University ranked first, followed by Kocaeli University. These results emphasize the need for teachers to pay more attention to language learning strategies in all skills in their lessons, in addition to guiding their students to the correct learning strategies and training them on how to use them.

Abstract

Recent educational reforms focus on strategically integrating technology into teaching, aligning with the principles of the fourth industrial revolution (IR 4.0). Among the swiftly evolving technologies in language learning is Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly in the form of Natural Language Processing (NLP). This technology has been applied to create the E-Muhadathat kit, an interactive Arabic conversation simulation tool designed to enhance communication skills for non-Arabic speaking students in Malaysian public universities. This study aims to investigate the role of AI in education, address the challenges in developing AI-based Arabic language learning software, and propose a model for the E-Muhadathat kit tailored for non-Arabic speakers. This literature review uses documentary methods to gather information from journals, conference proceedings, articles, dissertations, and digital books from databases such as Google Scholar, Springer Link, Science Direct, and Research Gate. The collected data undergoes descriptive analysis based on thematic categorization. The findings indicate that the concept of AI consists of three core components: machine learning, deep learning, and neural networks. Arabic linguists have recognized several challenges in developing AI-based software, such as orthographic, morphological, syntactic, anaphoric, and semantic ambiguities. Moreover, the E-Muhadathat kit's design integrates machine learning and deep learning techniques, featuring applications for both spoken and written language. The study's findings support educators and researchers aiming to create Arabic language software tailored for non-native speakers in Malaysian higher education institutions. As a result, the study advocates for further investigation into the use of AI in Arabic language education to enhance the communication abilities of non-native speakers in Malaysia.

Abstract

Films have a significant impact on the Muslim community in Malaysia due to their content; watching the film affects them with an understanding of Islam or otherwise based on its content, and watching the film also assists Arabic language students in learning language studies from the film, such as analyzing the linguistic knowledge found in the film. This study sought to uncover Said Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas' core notions about the nature of knowledge from an Islamic perspective by applying them to the film Paskal and showing the Islamization of the Malay language used in the film. The current study depended on the descriptive analytical technique, where the semiotic tool was employed when studying the film's content to obtain deeper Islamic notions from the perspective of Al-Attas. The most significant finding from this study's conclusion is that the Malay film contains numerous scenarios that illustrate the seven Islamic ideals from Sayd Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas's perspective: religion, humanity, science and knowledge, wisdom, justice, literature, college and university. In addition, the term Islamization of the Malay language refers to using Islamic Arabic terminology in Malay. In this film, loanwords in Arabic are used often, totaling 28 words, and two Malay terms that convey Islamic connotations.

Abstract

In the industrial revolution era, good teaching and learning processes should integrate the transfer of knowledge and values as a solid foundation for building students’ character. This research is a descriptive case study; the data were collected using observations and interviews before they were analyzed using an interactive model proposed by Miles & Huberman (1994). The result shows that Arabic teaching and learning is a befitting school subject that instills character values. Furthermore, character building can be seen in the planning, implementing, and evaluating Arabic teaching and learning processes. However, obstacles to its processes still exist, including the lack of coordination between parents and educators in the Islamic boarding school environment. Its supporting factors were also found, including a supportive curriculum, positive habituation, support for adequate facilities and infrastructure, and various programs organized by the Islamic boarding school regarding building the student character.
