Abstract

Writing the background is obligatory in undergraduate theses, and discourse markers are essential to creating cohesion and coherence in academic writing. Thus, this paper aimed to investigate discourse markers used by the undergraduate students in writing their thesis backgrounds and the extent of accuracy of the use of DMs in the students’ thesis backgrounds. Data were collected from 28 undergraduate thesis backgrounds written by the students of the English Language Education Study Program of Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta batch 2016, who graduated between May 2020 and January 2021. Descriptive research was employed, and the data were examined using document analysis. Results showed that elaborative markers were used 763 times (74.58%) and followed by reason markers 95 times (9.29%), inferential markers 85 times (8.31%), and contrastive markers 80 times (7.82%). In general, the EFL students used DMs accurately in their thesis backgrounds. Some DMs were, however, used inappropriately. It is essential that the EFL students better understand how to use DMs appropriately when writing their thesis backgrounds.

Abstract

These This article discusses two of Khaled Hosseini’s notable novels, namely The Kite Runner (2003) and A Thousand Splendid Suns (2007). These novels describes the story where Afghanistan is affected by the negative impacts of the long-running confilicts and the other social problems. The purpose of this article is to discuss the negative impacts of the cultural ban and the violation of human rights on the characters’ psychological condition. By applying the qualitative method and the psychoanalysis theory, this article would explain how the case of cultural ban and human rights violation affected the characters in the novels. The writer would also use several additional references to strengthen the evidences in this article. The findings of this article are related to the characters’ stresses in dealing with their respective problems in each novel. In The Kite Runner, the discussion focuses on the Hazara characters named Hassan and Sohrab, with the latter being the most-discussed one. Both are the victims of Taliban atrocities where Hassan was killed by the officials, and his son Sohrab was captured and forced to be a bacha bazi (dancing boy) by Assef, the antagonist of the novel , which reflected the negative impact of violations towards his psychological development. The next result is found in the second novel titled A Thousand Splendid Suns, which focuses on the story of Mariam. In the plot, Mariam is shown to be oppressed by both his temperamental husband Rasheed and the strict regulations of Taliban, which also at least prevented her to gain her rights and triggered her stress.

Abstract

: Indonesian political multi-parties system requires political parties to build a solid coalition in anticipating any election event, at all levels; national, regional, and local. The description of the way political parties build the relationship and how candidates seek support from a party is often described metaphorically as stages of marriage. There are few studies of metaphor in political discourse in the Indonesian context, but less attention is given to the detail of the use of the specific source domain MARRIAGE. This study aims to take a deeper look at how the marriage relationship context is used to describe the conceptual metaphor of political coalition establishment. The aim of this study is to identify the mapping principle from the Source domain of MARRIAGE to the target domain POLITICAL COALITION to pinpoint the particular properties that enable characteristics in MARRIAGE to be used as the metaphorical expressions. Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) of Lakoff and Johnson (1980) and Deliberate Metaphor Theory of Steen, (2011) are used as the theoretical framework, with six news headlines about the political coalition from Indonesian online media news is purposively chosen as the data source.

Abstract

The Brahmaraja Triloka Pura Community is a group of individuals who can maintain their existence amidst the issue of intolerance. The members identify themselves as Shiva Buddha adherents. The members of the Triloka Pura Brahmaraja Community believe themselves to be the descendants of the last Majapahit. They have temples as a form of the ancestral tomb located in Ponggok District, Blitar Regency. The inauguration of the Brahmaraja Triloka Pura temple was attended by adherents of Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Catholicism, and Confucianism. Moderation of religion is reflected through tolerance, acceptance, and respect for the members' beliefs. There are even several types of places of worship in one temple complex such as the Brahma Caturmuka and kelenteng. Surface-level diversity lies in social status, age, gender, ethnicity, and religion. The deep level of diversity lies in the values, ideologies, and motives of each member in conducting worship at the temple. Diversity management which is applied through religious moderation maintains harmonious relations with all creatures, even the invisible ones, anti-discrimination, and orientation to the homogeneity of Majapahit descent from a blend of Javanese, Balinese, and Chinese.

Abstract

Various studies have examined EFL students' attitudes towards accented English. However, this topic has rarely been studied in the Saudi context. The current study examined the attitudes of Saudi EFL university students towards teachers with British or American-accented English (a native speaker model) and Arabic-accented English (a nonnative speaker model) in the language classroom. Thirteen Saudi EFL students participated in this study. An online questionnaire was administered using the matched-guise technique. The results of the study showed that EFL teachers with an American accent is the most favored by their students. Nevertheless, there was little support for this finding. Another important finding is that the examined EFL students had similar positive attitudes towards both British and Arabic accented English. This similarity might suggest that having an accent as an EFL teacher might not perceived negatively as long as the teacher has the ability to deliver information properly.
