Abstract

This study examines the effect of a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model integrated with local issues on the geography learning interest of Class XI Social Science students at SMA Negeri 5 Bengkulu Selatan. Initial observations indicated that student engagement and learning interest were noticeably low, supported by pretest results far below the minimum competency standard. A quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group was employed, involving 28 students in the experimental class and 23 in the control class. Data were collected through a 20-item Likert-scale questionnaire measuring four indicators of learning interest: enjoyment, curiosity, receptiveness, and active participation. Hypothesis testing was conducted using SmartPLS 4 with the bootstrapping technique. The findings show that the experimental class achieved a mean interest score of 64.29 (80.36%), categorized as High, compared to 48.65 (60.82%) in the control class, categorized as Moderate. The path coefficient was 1.530, T-statistics reached 18.303 (>1.96), and P-value was 0.000 (<0.05), confirming a significant positive effect. The R-squared value of 0.585 indicates that the PBL model accounted for 58.5% of the variance in student learning interest. This study confirms that contextualizing PBL with locally relevant issues specifically illegal gold mining (PETI) in Lebong Regency is an effective strategy for improving student engagement in geography learning.

Abstract

Antibiotic resistance in Salmonella typhi has become a major problem in Indonesia, where typhoid fever remains common and the effectiveness of antibiotics is diminishing due to this resistance. Jackfruit leaves (Artocarpus heterophyllus) are a plant source of active compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, and saponins. Meanwhile, chayote (Sechium edule) leaf extract contains active compounds such as saponins and tannins. This study aimed to determine the antibacterial activity of a combination of chayote leaf and fruit extracts against Salmonella typhi, as well as to identify the most optimal concentration. The study employed an experimental design using a completely randomized design (CRD). The treatments consisted of a positive control (chloramphenicol) and a negative control (distilled water), single extracts of jackfruit and chayote leaves at concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%, and combinations of jackfruit and chayote extracts at ratios of 1:1, 2:1, and 1:2, with each treatment repeated three times. Data for the single jackfruit and chayote extracts, as well as the N:LS (1:1) combination, were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis, while the N:LS (1:2) and N:LS (2:1) combinations were analyzed using one-way ANOVA. The results of the study showed that all treatments exhibited antibacterial activity ranging from moderate to strong, and the extract combinations demonstrated higher inhibitory activity compared to the single extracts, with the combination of jackfruit leaves and chayote leaves

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the structure of the Serawai ethnic folktale Dusun Tinggi (Sebakas) from Air Nipis District, South Bengkulu Regency, and to identify its cultural value orientations based on Kluckhohn’s theory as well as the cultural values embedded in the story. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method. The data were collected through interviews with informants, observation, documentation, and note-taking. The data were analyzed by examining the narrative structure, including theme, plot, characters and characterization, and setting, followed by an analysis of cultural value orientations based on Kluckhohn’s theory and the identification of cultural values. The results indicate that the folktale Dusun Tinggi (Sebakas) has a complete narrative structure consisting of the theme of arrogance and the loss of social concern, a progressive plot, the main characters Bintang Ruanau, Serunting Sakti, and the people of Dusun Sebakas, as well as natural, social, cultural, and psychological settings. The analysis also reveals five cultural value orientations based on Kluckhohn’s theory, namely the nature of human life, the nature of human work, the human relationship with time, the human relationship with nature, and the human relationship with others, with the human relationship with others emerging as the most dominant orientation. In addition, eight cultural values were identified: responsibility, mutual cooperation, social concern, humility, respect for others, respect for customs and traditions, simplicity, and spirituality. These findings demonstrate that the folktale Dusun Tinggi (Sebakas) functions not only as an oral literary work but also as a medium for transmitting cultural values, moral guidance, and preserving the local wisdom of the Serawai ethnic community.

Abstract

Student engagement is a key aspect of the learning process because it reflects students’ involvement during classroom activities. Preliminary research findings in third-grade classes at SDN I Jepun indicate that student engagement in learning the “My Home County” curriculum topic is still suboptimal. This study aims to describe and analyze third-grade students’ engagement in using Kahoot during IPAS lessons on the “My Home District” topic at SDN I Jepun in Tulungagung Regency. This study employs a qualitative approach using a descriptive research design. The research subjects consisted of the third-grade teacher and 20 third-grade students at SDN I Jepun. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and documentation, while data analysis utilized the Miles and Huberman model, which encompasses data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Data validity was tested using source triangulation and methodological triangulation. The research results showed that student engagement was 82.88%, while interviews with teachers and students revealed that most students were actively engaged throughout the learning process. Student engagement was evident through their attention to the lesson, their willingness to answer questions, their ability to express opinions or ask questions, and their active participation in Kahoot quizzes. The use of Kahoot made students more focused, enthusiastic, and motivated to participate in the lesson. Thus, the use of Kahoot supported the creation of interactive learning and encouraged student engagement in IPAS lessons.
