Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of implementing the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model on the mathematical critical thinking ability of grade VII students on algebra material at SMP Negeri 14 Seluma. The background of this study is the low critical thinking ability of students in understanding and solving algebraic problems logically and reflectively. The method used was a pre-experimental design with a One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The research subjects consisted of 29 students of class VII B, determined using a cluster random sampling technique. Data were collected using essay tests covering five critical thinking indicators based on Facione's (2011) theory, namely interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, and explanation. Data analysis employed the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, N-Gain percentage calculation, and the Paired Sample t-Test. The results showed that the mean posttest score was 86.21, higher than the mean pretest score of 38.97. The N-Gain percentage was 77.37%, categorized as high. The Paired Sample t-Test yielded a t-value of 30.258 with df = 28 and a Sig. (2-tailed) value of < 0.001, leading to the rejection of H0 and acceptance of Ha. Therefore, it is concluded that the implementation of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model is significantly effective in improving the mathematical critical thinking ability of grade VII students on algebra material at SMP Negeri 14 Seluma.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is one of the essential language skills that supports students' academic achievement. However, differences in students' reading interest may influence their ability to comprehend descriptive texts. This study aimed to determine the relationship between reading interest and descriptive text reading comprehension skills among seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Tanjungpinang for the 2025/2026 academic year. This research employed a quantitative correlational approach. The population consisted of 271 seventh-grade students, with a sample of 54 students selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using a reading interest questionnaire and a descriptive text reading comprehension test. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson Product Moment correlation with the assistance of IBM SPSS Statistics. The findings revealed that students' reading interest was generally categorized as good, while their descriptive text reading comprehension skills were also in the good category. Nevertheless, the correlation analysis indicated no significant relationship between reading interest and descriptive text reading comprehension skills. These findings suggest that students' reading comprehension is influenced not only by reading interest but also by other factors, such as vocabulary mastery, reading strategies, learning motivation, and the learning environment. Therefore, improving reading comprehension requires comprehensive instructional strategies and continuous literacy programs in schools.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) to enhance the micro-cognitive critical thinking processes of vocational students during the pre-writing and drafting phases of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) instruction. Conventional language instruction often isolates learning from authentic vocational contexts, triggering severe difficulties in translating technical ideas into structured texts. Addressing this empirical gap, a qualitative case study was conducted with tenth-grade students in the Agribusiness of Agricultural Product Processing (APHP) program at SMKN 1 Kotaraja. Data gathered through classroom observations, writing artifacts, and retrospective interviews from 32 participants, including six focal students, were analyzed using an interactive qualitative framework. The findings demonstrate that authentic agribusiness problem scenarios embedded within the PBL syntax effectively stimulate Facione’s core critical thinking indicators—interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and inference. Students successfully deconstructed complex agricultural issues, managed cognitive loads collaboratively, and produced coherent argumentative texts. Theoretically and practically, this study proves that integrating PBL into ESP instruction bridges the gap between vocational problem-solving and professional language proficiency, offering a validated pedagogical blueprint for modern vocational education.

Abstract

Critical thinking is one of the essential competencies that should be developed in elementary school Science and Social Studies (IPAS) learning. However, classroom instruction is still predominantly teacher-centered, resulting in limited student engagement and low critical thinking ability. This study aimed to improve students' critical thinking skills through the implementation of a Digital Pop-Up Book on the topic of Energy Transformation for fifth-grade students at SD Muhammadiyah 1 Sambeng. This research employed Classroom Action Research based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, consisting of two cycles: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The participants were nine fifth-grade students. Data were collected through observation, tests, and documentation and analyzed using descriptive quantitative and qualitative techniques. The findings revealed that the implementation of the Digital Pop-Up Book improved both the learning process and students' critical thinking skills. Teacher activity increased from 76.14% in Cycle I to 95.45% in Cycle II, while student activity increased from 75.00% to 93.18%. Students' average critical thinking score improved from 73.33 to 88.89, and classical learning mastery increased from 66.67% to 100%. These findings indicate that the Digital Pop-Up Book is an effective instructional medium for improving elementary school students' critical thinking skills by promoting active, interactive, and student-centered learning.

Abstract

Learning activeness is an essential indicator of the quality of early childhood education because it reflects children's physical, cognitive, emotional, and social engagement throughout the learning process. Preliminary observations conducted at KB An-Nur Class B-2, Sumberwringin, Bondowoso revealed that children's learning activeness was relatively low due to the limited availability and poor condition of Educational Play Equipment (EPE), resulting in less varied learning activities and passive classroom participation. This study aimed to improve children's learning activeness through the implementation of cardboard-based Educational Play Equipmentspecifically designed to meet the developmental characteristics of early childhood learners. The study employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, which consisted of two cycles involving the stages of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The research participants were children in Class B-2 of KB An-Nur. Data were collected through structured observations, documentation, and field notes. Learning activeness was assessed using five indicators: participation in learning activities, willingness to ask and answer questions, engagement in using Educational Play Equipment, cooperation with peers, and enthusiasm during classroom activities. The findings demonstrated that the implementation of cardboard-based Educational Play Equipment progressively enhanced children's learning activeness from the initial condition to Cycle I and showed a more substantial improvement in Cycle II after several refinements were introduced, including increasing the number of Educational Play Equipment sets, implementing small-group learning, and providing reinforcement through rewards. These improvements expanded children's opportunities to explore learning media, strengthened social interaction, and encouraged active participation throughout the learning process. The study concludes that cardboard-based Educational Play Equipment is an effective, economical, and environmentally friendly learning medium for enhancing early childhood learning activeness through child-centered, concrete, and enjoyable learning experiences. These findings provide practical implications for early childhood educators in developing innovative learning media from recycled materials to improve the quality of classroom learning

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the livelihood strategies of land-owning farmer households in facing recurrent flood crises in Nagari Desa Baru Barat, Ranah Batahan District, West Pasaman Regency. Repeated flooding has led to damaged rice fields, crop failure, and declining household income, increasing farmers’ economic vulnerability. The research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving land-owning farmers affected by floods. The findings indicate that flooding directly reduces rice production and destabilizes household income. To cope with these conditions, farmer households adopt several livelihood strategies: adjusting planting schedules and improving irrigation management, diversifying income sources outside agriculture, and utilizing loans for land recovery and farm continuity. These strategies reflect economic adaptation to environmental pressures and disaster risks.

Abstract

This study examines the development model of modern Islamic educational institutions with a focus on the implementation of educational practices at an Islamic school as a case study. The research is motivated by the challenges faced by Islamic education in responding to modernization, including the dichotomy between religious and general sciences, the weakening of moral values, and the need for integrating Islamic principles with contemporary educational systems. The objective of this study is to analyze the institutional development model, the implementation of modern Islamic education, the internalization of adab (ethical values), and the supporting and inhibiting factors influencing educational effectiveness. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach through literature review and theoretical analysis of Islamic educational concepts and their implementation in educational institutions. The findings indicate that the Islamic school has successfully integrated modern management practices with Islamic values through professional institutional governance, an integrated curriculum, student-centered learning approaches, and systematic character development programs. The internalization of adab is implemented through school culture, role modeling, religious activities, and continuous mentoring programs. Furthermore, the study reveals that strong leadership, qualified human resources, parental involvement, and supportive school culture significantly contribute to educational success. In conclusion, the modern Islamic education model implemented by the institution demonstrates that the integration of knowledge, faith, and character can produce graduates who are academically competent, morally grounded, spiritually aware, and capable of meeting the challenges of the twenty-first century.
