Abstract

Science concepts are often abstract and difficult to understand through conventional teaching methods. Therefore, a more interactive and concrete approach is necessary. Students frequently struggle to imagine or visualize invisible processes, which can lead to misconceptions or difficulty in grasping the material. The pop-up book, as a learning medium designed to accommodate students’ characteristics and cognitive needs, can serve as a bridge between abstract concepts and concrete experiences. With its three-dimensional elements that appear as the pages are opened, the pop-up book is expected to enhance visual understanding of complex natural phenomena, such as the water cycle, photosynthesis, and the circulatory system. This study is relevant as it aims to systematically examine how the use of pop-up books can improve visualization abilities and understanding of science concepts among elementary school students. The research used a qualitative approach with a descriptive design, involving 23 third-grade students of SDN Pandanrejo II and a teacher as the research subjects. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation analysis to gain an in-depth understanding of students’ and teachers’ experiences in using pop-up books during the learning process. The results show that 80–92% of students reported improvement in learning science through pop-up books. Around 80% of students felt engaged and interested, and found it easier to visualize and remember abstract concepts. Additionally, 85% showed better understanding of difficult concepts and became more active in discussions. About 78% showed improved critical thinking skills, and 82% felt learning became more student-centered. Thus, using pop-up books in science learning proved effective in enhancing students’ ability to visualize abstract and complex scientific concepts.

Abstract

The main competencies of 21st century education emphasize critical thinking and problem-solving skills. A subject with great potential for developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills is mathematics. However, the role of mathematics, which is so important and bridges various sciences, is not in line with its practice. Mathematics is considered difficult, feared and considered an unpleasant lesson because it is not contextually linked. The purpose of this research is to integrate the values of tawhid meaningfully in mathematics learning through the researcher's personal experience so as to produce changes in ways of thinking, ways of understanding and ways of teaching mathematics. This research is transformative research with autoethnography method. This certainly involves the researcher as a subjectivity in obtaining data and utilizing the dimensions of the five ways of knowing owned by transformative research in helping the research process, starting from cultural-self knowing, relational knowing, critical knowing, visionary and ethical knowing and knowing in action. Data collection techniques in obtaining research data include writing critical autoethnography, writing as inquiry and literature study. The results showed that meaningful mathematics learning can be realized through integration with Islamic values, especially tawhid asma wa sifat. This approach not only enriches conceptual understanding, but also touches the spiritual side, so that math no longer feels like a difficult science, hard to understand and separate from life. Through autoethnographic reflection, the researcher found that numbers that were previously considered abstract such as the number 1 and strange odd numbers, turned out to have a deep spiritual depth of meaning when associated with the concept of tawhid.

Abstract

The lack of effective local culture-based learning media is a challenge in instilling the value of independence in character education in elementary schools. This study aims to (1) describe the character value of independence in the Collection of Fairy Tales of Si Kancil and (2) describe the strengthening of the character value of independence as part of the teaching material for Indonesian language content in elementary schools. This research uses descriptive qualitative method with literary sociology approach and dialectical technique. The main data in the form of expressions that reflect the value of independence are taken purposively from five stories in the Collection of Fairy Tales of Si Kancil by M.B. Rahimsyah A.R. published by Lingkar Media in 2013. Secondary data were obtained from academic literature related to character, literary sociology, and children's literature. Data collection was conducted through literature study, analytical reading, and note-taking, with Miles & Huberman model analysis and validation through triangulation of methods and sources. The results showed that the Collection of Fairy Tales of Si Kancil contains four aspects of independence: emotional, economic, intellectual, and social. These values can be strengthened in Indonesian language learning through interactive strategies, such as group discussion, dramatization, story rewriting, as well as written reflection and case study. This study concludes that the collection of Fairy Tales of Si Kancil contains values of independence including emotional, economic, intellectual, and social aspects, which are relevant for strengthening students' character and can be effectively integrated in Indonesian language learning through interactive strategies in elementary schools.
