Abstract

Student engagement and critical thinking are essential competencies in 21st-century education, yet many high school learning activities remain teacher-centered and provide limited opportunities for active participation. Playful Study Design (PSD), which integrates enjoyable and competitive learning experiences, has the potential to enhance students' involvement and higher-order thinking. This study aimed to examine changes in Student engagement and critical thinking skills following the implementation of PSD in Informatics learning among eleventh-grade high school students. A quantitative approach employing a one-group pretest-posttest   design was used with 34 students of class XI CI at SMAN 1 Purwadadi. The intervention integrated designing fun and designing competition into collaborative problem-solving, discussions, presentations, and reflective learning activities. Data were collected using a student engagement questionnaire and an essay-based critical thinking test. Data were analyzed through validity, reliability, normality, and Paired Sample t-tests. The findings revealed statistically significant improvements in both Student engagement and critical thinking skills after the implementation of PSD (p < 0.001). Students demonstrated higher participation, stronger collaboration, and improved analytical performance in the posttest  compared with the pretest. These findings indicate that PSD was associated with positive changes in Student engagement and critical thinking skills. However, because the study employed a one-group pretest-posttest   design without a control group, the results should be interpreted cautiously and cannot be considered conclusive evidence of causal effectiveness. This study highlights the potential of PSD as a student-centered learning approach that supports the development of competencies required for 21st-century education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of interactive videos in overcoming visibility constraints and students' psychological anxiety in traditional dance learning. Employing a descriptive-analytical qualitative approach, data were collected through observation, interviews, and Likert scale questionnaires from 30 8th-grade students and 1 teacher at SMP Nasional Denpasar. The results show that the slow motion and multi-angle features significantly reduce visual distortion, thereby increasing the accuracy of students' complex movement interpretations. Psychopedagogically, the use of personal devices successfully created a "safe space" that frees students from the pressure of social surveillance. This drastically reduced academic anxiety and encouraged students to practice freely and independently. Through the self-assessment mechanism, an 86.7% increase in student self-confidence was recorded. This interactive video also proved effective in distributing the teacher's instructional load. In conclusion, this media is highly effective as a pedagogical solution to facilitate learning autonomy and eliminate mental barriers during practice. Learning time becomes more efficient, providing educators with ample guidance space to focus on the transfer of aesthetic values and soulful expressions (wirasa).

Abstract

Social diversity is an inherent characteristic of the elementary school environment and has significant potential as a foundation for fostering students' character development and tolerance. This article aims to systematically examine research findings on the role of social diversity in elementary schools in promoting students' character and tolerance. The study employed a qualitative literature review using content analysis. The literature search was conducted through Google Scholar, ERIC, and Scopus databases using the keywords social diversity, elementary school, character education, tolerance, keberagaman sosial, sekolah dasar, and pendidikan karakter. The included sources consisted of peer-reviewed journal articles and books published between 2021 and 2026 in both Indonesian and English, focusing on social diversity in elementary school settings and available in full text. Irrelevant, duplicate, and non-peer-reviewed publications were excluded from the analysis. The review revealed that social diversity in elementary schools encompasses differences in religion, ethnicity, culture, language, socioeconomic background, gender, and individual characteristics. The synthesis of the selected studies indicates that social diversity contributes to strengthening students' character by fostering tolerance, empathy, cooperation, responsibility, social awareness, and mutual respect. The development of tolerance is facilitated through inclusive social interactions, collaborative learning, multicultural value habituation, and teachers' role modeling in creating a learning environment that respects diversity. The findings highlight that social diversity is not merely a reality of elementary education but also serves as a fundamental basis for developing inclusive educational practices that support students' character development.

Abstract

Balinese, as an element of Balinese cultural identity, is experiencing symptoms of maintenance shift among the urban younger generation due to the dominance of Indonesian, despite being reinforced through regional language preservation regulations. This condition is of particular concern at the Vocational High School (SMK) level in the health sector in urban areas such as Denpasar, which has not been widely researched and possesses vocational curriculum characteristics different from those of general schools. This study aims to describe the language attitudes of students at SMKS Kesehatan Bali Medika Denpasar toward the Balinese language based on three indicators-namely language loyalty, language pride, and norm of language awareness-while also identifying the factors that influence them. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through an open-ended questionnaire distributed to 307 students (50% of the population of 614 students), in-depth interviews with 12 selected informants, and field observations, then analyzed qualitatively using an interactive analysis model and validated through source and technique triangulation. The results show that students' language loyalty is relatively low, marked by the dominance of code-mixing and full code-switching to Indonesian in institutional domains; language pride, on the other hand, is relatively high and cuts across ethnic backgrounds, driven by the instrumental value of Balinese in healthcare services; while norm of language awareness regarding Balinese speech levels (sor singgih basa Bali) remains low and largely stems from limited linguistic competence. These findings indicate that students' language attitudes are fragmented across the affective, conative, and cognitive components, so that strengthening positive language attitudes requires strategies that target not only cultural pride but also the habituation of active language use and the contextual reinforcement of Balinese language competence.

Abstract

Character education is an essential component of special education because it emphasizes not only academic achievement but also the development of students' attitudes, values, and adaptive behaviors. For students with intellectual disabilities, character education requires contextual, adaptive, and culturally responsive approaches. This study aimed to analyze the process of Tri Hita Karana value internalization in character education for students with intellectual disabilities at SLB Negeri 1 Buleleng, Bali, identify the pedagogical strategies implemented, and examine their implications for students' character development. This research employed a qualitative case study design. Data were collected through observations, in-depth interviews, and document analysis involving 15 informants consisting of the principal, teachers, students with intellectual disabilities, and parents. Data were analyzed using an interactive model through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, while trustworthiness was established through source and technique triangulation. The findings indicate that the internalization of Tri Hita Karana values is embedded in school culture through religious habituation, guided social interaction, teacher role modeling, and environmental care activities adapted to students' learning characteristics. The parahyangan dimension nurtures religious discipline and spiritual awareness, pawongan develops empathy, cooperation, and social adaptation through structured guidance, while palemahan strengthens environmental responsibility, independence, and adaptive life skills through routine environmental practices. These findings suggest that, within the context of this case study, Tri Hita Karana represents a meaningful Balinese local wisdom-based framework that contributes to the holistic character development of students with intellectual disabilities.

Abstract

The low learning outcomes of third-grade elementary school students in Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) indicate the need for learning media that can present abstract concepts in a more concrete and engaging way. This study aimed to develop and analyze the effectiveness of multimedia-based animated videos in improving IPAS learning outcomes among third-grade elementary school students. This research employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE model, which includes Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The subjects consisted of 43 third-grade students in Gugus II Kecamatan Seririt, divided into an experimental class of 16 students and a control class of 27 students, along with four teachers involved in the practicality test. The instruments used were expert validation sheets, teacher and student response questionnaires, and IPAS learning outcome tests in the form of pretest and posttest. The results showed that the developed animated video was highly valid, with validity scores of 0.94 from media experts, 0.96 from material experts, and 0.94 from language experts. The practicality test showed that the media was highly practical, with a teacher response score of 96.67% and a student response score of 88.25%. The effectiveness test showed that the experimental class obtained a higher posttest mean score of 85.63 than the control class, which obtained 71.48. The independent sample t-test produced t = 8.72, df = 41, and p < 0.001, indicating a significant difference in learning outcomes. The N-Gain score of the experimental class was 0.68, while the control class obtained 0.37. Therefore, multimedia-based animated videos are valid, practical, and effective for improving IPAS learning outcomes among third-grade elementary school students.

Abstract

The implementation of the Kurikulum Merdeka (Independent Curriculum) encourages teachers to adopt differentiated instruction that accommodates the diverse characteristics of students. However, science instruction regarding food chains in elementary schools still faces a lack of learning media that supports differentiated instruction. This study aims to analyze the need for developing a differentiated-instruction-based puzzle medium for the food chain topic in Grade 5 elementary school, serving as the basis for formulating the medium's specifications. This study constitutes a preliminary study within the "Analysis" phase of the ADDIE development model, employing a quantitative descriptive approach. It was conducted at SDN Joglo 05, West Jakarta, involving 28 students from class VC as respondents. Data were collected using a needs analysis questionnaire comprising 25 statements across five indicators: student characteristics, the state of science instruction, the need for puzzle media, differentiation within the media, and learning outcomes. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, specifically mean scores and percentages. The results indicate that the need for puzzle media (92.6%), differentiation within the media (90.2%), student characteristics (85.6%), and learning outcomes (89.4%) fell into the "very high" category, whereas the state of science instruction fell into the "moderate" category (62.4%). These findings reveal a gap between the students' high need for differentiated learning media and the current state of science instruction. The results of this needs analysis serve as an empirical basis for formulating the specifications of the differentiated-instruction-based puzzle medium to be developed during the "Design" phase of the ADDIE model.

Abstract

Bullying remains a real problem within Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), even though these institutions are oriented toward the development of Islamic morals and character. The gap between the Islamic values taught and the daily practices of students (santri) serves as the primary background of this research. This study aims to analyze the hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) concerning the prohibition of bullying and to examine the implementation of these values in the lives of students at Pondok Pesantren Al-Ikhwan Assalam Serapuh, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra. A qualitative approach with field research was employed, involving 10 informants (1 administrator, 2 caretakers, 1 teacher, and 6 students) selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model and a thematic hadith approach (mawḍū‘ī). The findings reveal that verbal bullying is the most dominant form and is often perceived as joking, thus frequently unrecognized as a violation of Islamic teachings; social bullying was also found, while physical and psychological bullying occurred at lower intensities. Contributing factors include students' limited understanding of bullying boundaries, excessive joking culture, textual religious comprehension, and suboptimal anti-bullying socialization. Implementation of hadith values is carried out through role modeling by caretakers, supervision of student interactions, hadith-based religious instruction, and enforcement of rules with educational sanctions. The study concludes that hadiths prohibiting bullying have strong relevance as a normative foundation for anti-bullying efforts; however, the internalization of these values into students' behavior remains suboptimal. Therefore, strengthening moral development, systematic anti-bullying socialization, and continuous habituation of hadith values are essential to create a safe, harmonious, and Islamically characterized boarding school environment.

Abstract

The Merdeka Curriculum is a new educational framework introduced by the Indonesian government to improve national education quality and support learning recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic. Its transition from the 2013 Curriculum requires teachers to adapt and relearn the curriculum, which has challenged many educators. To support this process, the government launched the Merdeka Mengajar Platform (PMM) as a self-directed learning tool for teachers. This study aims to examine in depth the impact of PMM on teachers in a Sekolah Penggerak (driving school) at the elementary level. A qualitative descriptive design with a case study approach was employed at SDN 4 Gulang, Mejobo District, Kudus Regency. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and document analysis, and their credibility was ensured through source and technique triangulation, followed by data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal three interrelated impacts. First, PMM improved teachers' digital literacy, shown by their growing ability to operate the platform, complete training topics, and design teaching materials using Microsoft Word and Canva. Second, PMM fostered learning innovation, enabling teachers to move from monotonous, teacher-centred instruction toward more active, creative, and enjoyable learning that raised students' engagement. Third, PMM supported teachers' professional development through its community feature, webinars, and certified training integrated with performance management. The study concludes that the Merdeka Mengajar Platform exerts a positive and mutually reinforcing impact on elementary teachers in a Sekolah Penggerak, where improved digital literacy underpins both learning innovation and continuous professional growth.

Abstract

The socioeconomic background of families is often assumed to be related to the academic achievement of elementary school students, yet empirical findings on this relationship remain mixed. This study aims to examine the relationship between parental socioeconomic status and the academic achievement of fifth-grade elementary school students in Peranap District. A quantitative approach with a correlational design was employed. Using a saturated sampling technique, 50 fifth-grade students from SDN 004, SDN 006, and SDN 017 Baturijal Hulu were involved. Parental socioeconomic status was measured through a questionnaire covering five indicators (parental education, occupation, income, learning facilities, and parental support), while academic achievement was obtained from students’ report card scores. The questionnaire’s Likert-scale items were tested for validity, resulting in 19 valid items, and for reliability with a Cronbach’s Alpha of 0.889. Data were analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment correlation after the assumptions of normality (Kolmogorov-Smirnov, sig. 0.149 and 0.664 > 0.05) and linearity had been met, with no extreme outliers detected. The analysis yielded a correlation coefficient of 0.880 (p < 0.001), indicating a very strong and significant positive relationship, so that the alternative hypothesis was accepted. The coefficient of determination (77.4%) is interpreted as the proportion of variance in academic achievement statistically associated with parental socioeconomic status, not as evidence of a direct causal effect. As the design is correlational, the findings should be understood as associations rather than cause-and-effect relationships.
