Abstract

Abstract: In psycholinguistics, slips of the ear involving the area of speech perception have accumulated data in recent years. Slip of the ear (SOE) is a phenomenon that occurs when someone misunderstands what the speaker has communicated, whether in quiet or busy environments. The objective of this current study is to identify and determine the many forms of ear slips as defined by Bond (2005), with a focus on the most commonly occurring varieties. The participants in the study were 40 elementary school pupils from grades 3, 4, and 5 at SDN 1 Gubeng Surabaya. These students did not have any hearing impairment and their first language was Bahasa Indonesia. The method used pre-experimental design by giving a listening task in which the voice of speakers used two different accents that were Dayak-Melayu and Minang. Hence, there were 10 sentences in which the participants had to complete the blank space in each sentence. There were 254 incorrect answers, classified into 11 types out of 14 types of SOE. Furthermore, the most frequent type of SOE found is well-formed and ill-formed utterances (30.77%). Lastly, it may be concluded that even in quiet situations and in their own first language, the participants still misperceived the utterance or the gap in every sentence. Abstrak: Dalam psikolinguistik, keliru dengar melibatkan area persepsi ucapan telah tercatat dalam data dalam beberapa tahun terakhir. Fenomena slips of the ear terjadi karena kesalahpahaman seseorang terhadap apa yang telah disampaikan oleh pembicara baik dalam situasi hening maupun ramai. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui jenis dan tipe slips of the ear yang paling sering terjadi menurut Bond (2005). Terdapat 40 siswa SD kelas 3, 4, dan 5 SDN 1 Gubeng Surabaya sebagai peserta, tidak memiliki gangguan pendengaran, dan menggunakan bahasa Indonesia sebagai bahasa pertama mereka. Metode yang digunakan adalah pre-experimental design dengan memberikan tugas menyimak dimana suara pembicara menggunakan dua aksen yang berbeda yaitu Dayak-Melayu dan Minang, sehingga ada 10 kalimat yang harus diisi oleh peserta pada setiap kalimat. Studi ini menemukan ada 254 jawaban salah yang diklasifikasikan ke dalam 11 jenis dari 14 jenis slips of the ear. Selain itu, jenis slip of the ear yang paling banyak terjadi dalam penelitian ini adalah ujaran well-formed dan ill-formed senilai 30,77%. Akhirnya, dapat disimpulkan bahwa dalam situasi hening dan bahasa pertama mereka sendiri pun, para peserta masih mengalami salah mempersepsikan ucapan atau celah di setiap kalimat. Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan sebagai upaya melihat strategi pengajaran yang tepat untuk digunakan dalam proses pembelajaran Bahasa Indonesia. Pembelajaran yang melibatkan game menjadi motivasi yang besar bagi siswa. Seiring kemajuan teknologi, siswa menjadi semakin akrab dengan gadget. Fenomena ini juga dapat mendorong guru untuk menggunakan media game yang meningkatkan antusias dan memotivasi siswa dalam proses pembelajaran. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif yang diperoleh dari hasil observasi dan wawancara. teknik analisis data menggunakan teknik model interaktif Miles dan Huberman (2019): reduksi data (data reduction), pemaparan data (data display), dan penarikan kesimpulan (conclusion/verifying). Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa bahwa guru dituntut untuk dapat membuat siswa menangkap pelajaran dengan cara yang cukup khas dan menyenangkan sehingga mereka menikmati dan merasa senang. Dengan demikian, pembelajaran berlangsung dengan kondusif dan efisien.

Abstract

This article contains students' pair work interactions on developing their speaking skills in speaking class. Pairing students for their speaking practice was more effective than grouping the students. But in this study that was not always the case. There are some requirements to complete the effectiveness of pair-work interaction. Thus, to collect the data, the author observed a speaking class in one of the universities in Surabaya with the consent of the faculty and the lecturer. The collected data will be analyzed using interactive analysis techniques and was presented in a descriptive form. There were two classes that were observed with 26 students in first class and 27 students in second class. When the students present are an odd number the lecturer will make it one group with three people. The lecturer lets the students have freedom to choose their own partner. The topic that was given to the students was "Welcoming Visitor”. From the observations the task was more successfully carried out by the second class than the first class. Pairs in the first class are less active than the second class. This can be seen from when they discussed how they proceed with the assignment of this speaking class. Based on the experience of this current study it is advisable to observe pair-work activities within smaller student groups than those of the current study, as observing large-scale pairs can be overwhelming for the observer. When observing large-scale pairs it is advisable to employ more than two observers. Thus the results would yield richer information and enhanced result consistency when monitoring a class engaged in pair work.

Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji nama-nama sate di Jawa Timur dari perspektif semantik untuk mengungkap makna dan nilai-nilai sosial budaya yang terkandung di dalamnya. Dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif, penelitian ini menganalisis 22 nama sate yang diperoleh melalui observasi lapangan dan wawancara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penamaan sate di Jawa Timur dapat diklasifikasikan berdasarkan keserupaan, plesetan, sifat khas, bahan, dan inovasi. Makna di balik nama-nama tersebut mencerminkan kearifan lokal, kreativitas linguistik, dan nilai-nilai sosial budaya masyarakat Jawa Timur. Analisis semantik mengungkapkan bahwa nama-nama sate tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai penanda kuliner, tetapi juga sebagai representasi identitas, humor, dan filosofi masyarakat setempat. Lebih lanjut, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa penamaan sate sering kali mengandung unsur metafora yang menggambarkan karakteristik hidangan atau konteks sosial budayanya. Keberagaman strategi penamaan yang ditemukan juga mencerminkan adaptabilitas bahasa dan budaya Jawa Timur dalam menghadapi perubahan dan inovasi kuliner, sambil tetap mempertahankan identitas lokal. Penelitian ini memberikan wawasan penting tentang bagaimana bahasa, khususnya dalam penamaan kuliner, dapat menjadi cerminan dinamika sosial dan budaya suatu masyarakat, serta berkontribusi pada pemahaman yang lebih dalam tentang hubungan antara bahasa, makanan, dan identitas budaya.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji pengaruh teknologi Augmented Reality (AR) dan Artificial Intelligence (AI) terhadap antusiasme dan akseptansi siswa dalam pembelajaran bahasa di sekolah dasar. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah pendekatan kuantitatif dengan desain cross-sectional. Data dikumpulkan melalui kuesioner yang didistribusikan kepada 200 siswa sekolah dasar di Sidoarjo. Analisis dilakukan menggunakan model Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) berbasis Partial Least Squares (PLS). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa teknologi AR dan AI berpengaruh signifikan terhadap antusiasme siswa, dengan nilai β sebesar 0,186 (p = 0,002) untuk AR dan β sebesar 0,649 (p = 0,000) untuk AI. Selain itu, AR juga berpengaruh langsung terhadap akseptansi siswa dengan nilai β sebesar 0,201 (p = 0,020), sementara AI berpengaruh terhadap akseptansi dengan β sebesar 0,223 (p = 0,012). Antusiasme siswa berperan sebagai mediator signifikan dalam hubungan antara penggunaan teknologi dan akseptansi, dengan pengaruh tidak langsung AI melalui antusiasme sebesar β = 0,149 (p = 0,003) dan AR sebesar β = 0,043 (p = 0,040). Nilai R² untuk antusiasme adalah 64,3%, dan untuk akseptansi adalah 35,8%. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa penggunaan AR dan AI mampu meningkatkan antusiasme dan akseptansi siswa terhadap pembelajaran bahasa. Kedua teknologi tersebut dapat menciptakan pengalaman belajar yang lebih interaktif dan personal, yang secara signifikan meningkatkan penerimaan siswa terhadap metode pembelajaran berbasis teknologi.

Abstract

Abstract: During COVID-19, some teaching strategies for vocabulary, as with other materials, cannot be re-adopted since the teaching activities have shifted to online. Language teachers started providing students with educational videos taken from YouTube to overcome this situation. Using technology, mainly YouTube, to learn English has persisted since the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite being a trend nowadays, vocabulary teaching strategies on videos for English learning on YouTube are relatively unexplored. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the vocabulary teaching strategies on Learn English with Papa Teach Me YouTube channel. This study adopted a qualitative approach. The data of this study were obtained from a playlist titled “English Vocabulary” on Learn English with Papa Teach Me. The data were analyzed using Harmer‟s (1991) vocabulary teaching strategies. The findings show that Learn English with Papa Teach Me applied five of seven vocabulary teaching strategies proposed by Harmer (1991), which are: (1) mime, action, and gesture; (2) picture; (3) explanation; (4) enumeration; and (5) translation. Three strategies that were most frequently used are mime, action, and gesture (59 times), picture (54 times), and explanation (51 times). Therefore, this study recommends the utilization of (1) mime, action, gesture, (2) picture, and (3) explanation strategies for teachers. Teachers can combine these strategies to catch students‟ attention, help them understand the vocabulary context, and enhance their memorization ability. Abstract

 Abstract: Nowadays, mass shootings have become a major problem in the United States. The media, especially CNN, plays an important role in shaping ideologies and perceptions of this case. This study aims to analyze CNN's role in representing shooting incidents in the United States from October to November 2023. This research applied a descriptive qualitative method, focusing on corpus-based Critical Discourse Analysis using Fairclough’s (2013) theory. The results found that the collocation and concordance of the word “Shooting” are often associated with verbs and adjectives with negative connotations. Discourse practice analysis indicates CNN’s tendency as a “left-wing” media. Furthermore, socio-cultural practice analysis shows that the shooting incident is related to the international political situation and poor government response. In addition, social factors reflect the ideology, culture, politics, and economic aspects of this shooting case. Thus, CNN’s ideology aligns with the left-wing groups, or liberals, in reporting mass shooting cases in the United States. Keywords: Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), Corpus, Shooting, CNN

Abstract

Abstract: : This study aims to explore the relationship between language, culture, and local identity through the ethnolinguistic analysis of traditional Gresik cuisine. A total of 14 culinary names were documented, including Sego Krawu, Pudak, Mangut Bandeng, and Otak-Otak Bandeng, which serve as a medium for communicating cultural values passed down through generations. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with local residents, direct observations, and literature reviews, and analyzed using a qualitative descriptive method. The findings reveal that the names of traditional Gresik dishes reflect the region's historical  significance as a port city, its social and cultural traditions, and its close connection with the geographic environment. For instance, the term “Pudak” illustrates the community's creativity in utilizing natural materials such as areca palm leaves as wrappers, while “Sego Krawu” symbolizes the simplicity and togetherness of the people. Additionally, the influence of the historical spice trade is evident in cooking techniques such as salting and the use of rich spices in dishes like Mangut Bandeng. Culinary names also serve as markers of cultural identity, strengthening the community's sense of belonging. In the context of globalization, these names symbolize resistance to culturalhomogenization. Through food festivals, they play a role in cultural diplomacy, introducing Gresik's unique heritage to the broader world. This documentation aims to preserve culinary traditions as intangible cultural heritage and provides a reference for future linguistic and anthropological studies. Abstract

Abstract: The ethics of language usage in YouTube live streaming has become an increasingly important topic as the platform grows in popularity as a medium for communication and entertainment. Live streaming facilitates direct interaction between content creators and viewers, often leading to uncontrolled language use by streamers. Ethical issues in language usage in this context can have negative impacts, such as the spread of hate speech and the creation of an unhealthy communication environment. Therefore, this paper aims to: (1) examine the language used by streamers MiawAug and Windah Basudara during YouTube live streams, (2) assess the impact of their language usage during live streaming, and (3) provide suggestions or recommendations for gaming streamers on YouTube.This study employs a qualitative research approach. Data collection techniques include indirect interviews conducted through Google Forms. The research subjects are active students from UPN Veteran Jawa Timur who are viewers of MiawAug and Windah Basudara’s YouTube live streams. The study period spans from August to October 2024.The results of the study reveal the following Language usage Windah Basudara often uses less polite expressions, such as "Anjir di kombo anjir muncul tiba-tiba cok" (used during surprising moments in games), while MiawAug tends to use more polite phrases like "Happy new year! Thank you everyone, happy new year!" (used during moments of victory). Impact of language usage: The positive impact of language usage by MiawAug and Windah Basudara during live streaming includes fostering a healthy and supportive community on YouTube. However, the negative impact includes potential harm to the community and a diminished viewing experience for audiences.Recommendations for gaming Streamers are encouraged to use proper and appropriate language to build a healthy community on YouTube. Abstract

Abstract: The hashtag "peringatan darurat" contains posts urging the public to monitor government decisions. This study aims to reveal the use and influence of language in the "peringatan darurat" hashtag on the social media platform X. The research employs a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. The data sources consist of tweet texts from posts tagged with "peringatan darurat" on social media X. To collect data, the methods used in this study include observation and documentation. The research analyzes microstructure, superstructure, and macrostructure using the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) model by Teun A. van Dijk. The microstructure is divided into semantics, syntax, and stylistics. The semantic elements reveal the use of denotative, connotative, rhetorical, and informal diction. The syntactic elements include declarative, imperative, and persuasive sentence forms. The stylistic elements highlight informative, satirical, and ironic language styles that enhance the discourse’s meaning. The superstructure identifies schematic elements, comprising an introduction, body, and conclusion. The macrostructure uncovers thematic elements that illustrate social criticism, collective solidarity, and public participation. The dimension of power reflects resistance to government policies through critical language, while the ideological dimension emphasizes the values of democracy and social justice underlying public opinion. This study concludes that the discourse within the "peringatan darurat" hashtag is strategically constructed in accordance with the ideological interests of the actors involved. The account @antikorupsi exerts pressure on the government through factual arguments, @walhinasional highlights environmental exploitation using metaphors, @aingriwehuy conveys public concerns through satire, and @Penyair_Berdiri generates social pressure through emotional rhetoric.
