Abstract

This research was intended to describe types of speech acts performed by English lecturers in learning process at Madrasah Aliyah Pondok Pesantren Al-Kamil. This research was descriptive qualitative. The data of this research were the English utterances performed by English Teachers. The researcher obtained the data by means of observation technique. In observation technique the researcher used recording instruments, sound recorder, to record the classroom dialogues. Next, the researcher writes some data into note to as a additional data report The researcher analyzes the directive speech act in this research using Kreidler’s theory (1998). Based on the observation, the researcher found three types of directive speech act. They are command/order, request, Warning or prohibitation. In conclusion, the researcher found directives speech act from observation are 3 utterances are command/order (2,80%) , 2 utterances are requesting (1,87%), 1 utterance is warning (0,93%), and 101 utterances are unidentified (94,39%)

Abstract

The objective of this research is to know and analyze the deductive and inductive approaches in teaching grammar used by english teachers at SMPN 2 Kota Tangerang. The researchers used descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research were collected through the observation of teaching and learning activities in the classroom of four english teachers at SMPN 2 Kota Tangerang. The result of the research showed that the four english teachers used either deductive approach or inductive approach, it can be seen from the way they were teaching, they chose and used either deductive approach or inductive seen by the steps that implemented by the teacher in teaching grammar, the role  of teacher and students in the teaching and learning activities. The three of four English teachers at SMPN 2 Kota Tangerang used or applied deductive approach in the classroom and one of them still used and applied inductive one. As for the used of an approach, the researchers got a result of the dominance approach used by the English teachers at SMPN 2 Kota Tangerang was deductive.

Abstract

The world assumes that someone who has emotions is someone who will harm themselves and those around them. Emotions that are considered as a disease called S.O.S. (switched of the syndrome). This research aims to analyze a film entitled Equals  (2015) that depicts a world with high technological advances and humans who do not have emotions. We will use the descriptive analysis method with Freud's psychoanalysis approach to analyze "Silas" as the main character who suddenly has an emotional feelings are forced to be hidden from the people around him including the woman he likes.There are three psychological structure of a person found in the psychology of literature that According to Sigmund Freud, namely the id, ego, and superego. The end result of this research we will see how Silas hides his feelings and find a solution about the situation. The story of Silas shows us about the emotional disease change his life in the future.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe listening comprehension problems faced by students when taking the TOEFL-like test. This research is a descriptive research. This research is also categorized as a survey, the broad area of survey research encompasses any measurement procedures that involves asking questions of respondents. Furthermore, the researcher gave questions to the sample in form of questionnaire to get the data about listening problem faced by students taking TOEFL-like. In this research, the researcher used the questionnaire to collect the data. After discussion in the previous chapter, finally leads the researcher to make conclusion from what have been already discussed. The conclusion is among the twenty indicators, all the indicators came from various sides, such as: students' side, TOEFL organizer, material, listening equipment and another supported thing that related to the activity on TOEFL test especially listening skills.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out students’ perceptions toward a learning media for EFL speaking skills. The purpose of this study is to find out students’ perceptions toward a learning media for EFL speaking skills. In this research, the researcher used questionnaires. The method of data analysis was descriptive method, which is analysing the data by illustrating the object of the research. The population of this research was the second-grade students of SMA Lokon St. Nikolaus Tomohon. There were 4 classes that spread into 2 science classes and 2 social classes. There were 107-second year students. And the sample was taken from science and social class based on the teacher’s recommendation. There were 35 students participating in this research to answer the questionnaires. Based on the results of this study, it was found that the students’ perception toward the statements was dominated positively because students were having a great experience in watching Video Blog. As conclusion, YouTube English Vlog was considered effective to the second-year students of SMA Lokon St. Nikolaus Tomohon. English teachers were suggested to always do something creative, follow the technology, and improve what needs to be improved for example blending the media with some interesting stimulations.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the significant effect on the students writing skills in narrative text taught using webtoon application at first grade of SMK Teknologi Pilar Bangsa Sepatan. Webtoon Application is acronym from Web and Toon it means website and cartoon. So, Webtoon Application is digital – based illustrated cartoon comics. This research was conducted for 1 month, starting from October 04th to October 25th 2021. The target population in this research is are students of class X OTKP 1 totaling 40 students and X OTKP 2 totaling 42 students with the total number of students in the two classes being 82 students, but the students who were able to collect pre – test and post -test were 74 students (37 student from X OTKP 1 and 37 from X OTKP 2). The research method used is quantitative. The design of this research is a quasi – experimental research to find out the effect of using an effective Webtoon Application to improve students’ ability in writing narrative texts. The data collection technique used a test consisting pre – test and post – test. Pre – test Pre – test was carried out to the experimental class and control class before being given a treatment. Post – test is carried out after being given treatment, namely the experimental class using Webtoon Application and control class didn’t receive or didn’t use Webtoon Application. The results of the research can show that: (1) In the experimental class the average value of the pre – test is 72.30 while the average value of the post – test is 77.43, (2) In the control class the average value of the pre – test was 70.86 while the average value of the post – test was 74.08. In the results of paired ttest, the results show indicate a significant change in the pre – test and post – test values of the experimental class namely sig.2 tailed of 0.000 < 0.05, then H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted so that it can be concludes there is an average difference between pre – test and post – test learning outcomes which means that there is an significance change on the use Webtoon Application in the ability of writing narrative texts.

Abstract

This research identifies students’ lexical errors in translating English text into Indonesian at Open University (Universitas Terbuka). The lexicon is essential in a translation. A good and acceptable translation should be able to successfully render the message of the source language into the target language by using the appropriate lexicon. The incorrect lexical choice will distort the source language's message. A translation test was administered to 35 students as part of the data collection process. The finding shows some students wrongly order the word in a sentence as the  result  of  word  by  word  translation  and  they  translate  it  using  dictionary and translation  machine like  Google  translate  so  that  it  still  has  errors  in  sentence  or  word. In addition, some of the students translate English text into Indonesian word by word. So that the translation did not correspond with the meaning of the text. Even though they used a dictionary, but they did not understand the text perfectly.

Abstract

The cultural differences between English and Indonesian languages impact the language used if vice versa, translations should suffice. The translation is a result of the distinctions outlined. This article aims to analyze the source and target Language oriented on The Bicycle Rider by Tom W. Shapcott on Sapardi Djoko Damono’s Translation. This approach is structured based on the topic matter and the study’s primary purpose. Data collection, analysis, and research design are part of this study’s methodology. To analyze The Bicycle Rider by Tom W. Shapcott on Sapardi Djoko Damono’s translation, we use Newmark’s theory as the base thinking. In this translation, we found six free translation methods, five semantic translation methods, five literal translation methods, and two adaptation translation methods. The conclusion is that this translation has dominated by source language-oriented translation; meanwhile, it has some target language-oriented translation.

Abstract

This study aims to conduct a contextual analysis of Public Service Advertisements from the Ministry of Education and Culture: OVERSEAS WORKER. The approach in this research is qualitative with content analysis method. The source of the data in this study is the Public Service Advertisement from the Ministry of Education and Culture: OVERSEAS WORKER which is uploaded through the YouTube channel of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia. From this research, four data were found that can be analyzed by contextual discourse analysis, which are divided into the principle of personal interpretation, the principle of locational interpretation, the principle of temporal or situational interpretation, and the principle of analogy.

Abstract

The aim of the research is to know the effect of using Ganze Method is effective to be used on the Eight Grade Students’ Reading Comprehension at SMPN 16 Kota Tangerang. Ganze Method is a method of teaching reading comprehension that gives the opportunities to the students to outline and translate the text by the students own words. Reading comprehension is complex highly process that increases students’ knowledge, the context of the text, and expectation by interaction between the students. Ganze method applied in teaching reading could be an effective method. It was very helpful for the improvement of the students’ reading comprehension. The method used in this research was quantitative method. The design of this research was quasi - experiment to know the effectiveness of using Ganze method on the students’ reading comprehension. The result can be seen that using Ganze Method as the method is effective on the students’ reading comprehension. It could be seen from the average of post - test result in Experimental Class was 80.98, and the average of pre-test was 61.25. The average of post-test result in controlled class was 67.42, and the average of pre-test was 60.11. The result of the t – test of post-test also showed that there was a significant difference between experimental and control class, t – count of ɑ = 5% and dƒ = 68 was 4.92, and for t – table was 1.99. The calculation proved that t-count was higher than t-table. It can be concluded that Ganze method can be considered to use for teaching reading comprehension since it can expand the students’ knowledge and information with the text easily.
