Abstract

This research aimed to identify business ethics that could be applied in visits and guest services for Japanese clients, considering the increasingly globalized business landscape. Given the necessity of collaborating with foreign partners, including Japanese individuals, this study employed a qualitative approach using observational methods based on the author's five years of experience in the Japanese business world. The findings revealed the importance of implementing appropriate ethics in all aspects of interaction, from airport pick-ups and in-car etiquette to hotel and dining manners, as well as accompanying guests on tours and receiving visitors at the company. Such practices fostered stronger relationships and enhanced trust with Japanese business partners. Business professionals needed to be adaptable and capable of building positive relationships with various stakeholders. Consequently, learning and applying business ethics was essential for any businessperson.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the dynamics of the second life and instinctual drives in the anime ReLife using Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory, specifically the concepts of Eros and Thanatos. ReLife narrates the journey of Arata Kaizaki, the main character who is given the opportunity to relive his youth through a scientific experiment. This research explores how the life drive (Eros), related to the desire for survival, love, and reproduction, competes with the death drive (Thanatos), which involves destructiveness, despair, and a tendency to return to a state of non-existence. By applying a narrative analysis method and a qualitative approach, this study found that ReLife symbolically depicts the struggle between Eros and Thanatos in Arata's inner conflict as he tries to start a new life while overcoming his past trauma. The results of this study indicate that ReLife not only portrays the character's struggle to rebuild his social life but also raises a deeper theme concerning the conflict between the life and death instincts in the context of modern life

Abstract

This paper examines the cross-border dynamics of Japanese metalcore, focusing particularly on the band Crossfaith, exploring how they navigate the complexities of global mobility, cultural identity, and transnationalism in their music. This study employs a case study approach, using document analysis as the primary method. The data then was analyzed by identifying recurring themes, patterns, and relationships. The results show that while metalcore itself is already transnational due to its use of English, Crossfaith exemplifies the creation of a "borderless" sound that transcends national boundaries. Through collaborations with international artists, performances at the Nikkosan Rinnoji Temple, and partnerships with local artists, the band manages to maintain a strong Japanese identity while appealing to a global audience. However, cross-border challenges remain, including linguistic barriers, visa restrictions, and cultural negotiations, which impact Crossfaith's international success, revealing the uneven access to global stages for non-Western artists. These challenges highlight the need for a more inclusive and accessible global music industry. This study concludes by advocating for the reduction of systemic barriers to ensure that diverse musical voices can fully participate in the global exchange of ideas, thereby enriching the cultural landscape and promoting greater cross-border collaboration in music.

Abstract

Language interference is a language error that can occur in everyday life, both consciously and unconsciously. There are various types of interference, including lexical, phonological, morphological, and syntactic. It can also be seen as code switching which combines two or more languages in one sentence. This error affects communication with both positive and negative impacts. Various factors, such as mother tongue, translation, and language acquisition can cause interference. This study uses a qualitative quantitative method to collect data categorized by the type of interference, as seen in the Detective Conan Movie by Aoyama Gosho.

Abstract

Homogeneous Japan is the source of several problems that have yet to be solved, one of which is bullying. The amount of bullying that occurs, especially in schools, causes many students to be depressed and even commit suicide. These harmful things are then represented in a film titled Monster (2023). In this paper, there are two research questions, namely 1) how does the government dominate and hegemonise society so that the concept of homogeneity and mentsu can crystallise in Japan? 2) what is the relationship between the discourses of LGBTQIA+, ijime, and mentsu that appear in the film? Antonio Gramsci's theory of hegemony is used with a qualitative method to dissect the film. This research discovered that the film attempts to voice the discrimination received by LGBTQIA+ people in Japan by portraying them as two boys who fall in love and yearn for freedom. The societal pressure that considers them different due to the hegemony of the homogeneous concept of Confucianism leads to ijime. This is exacerbated by the mentsu in society, which has a reciprocal relationship. LGBTQIA+ people therefore have no space in conservative Japanese society and so the film was produced to emancipate freedom for subaltern LGBTQIA+ people.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of the Japanese language in workplace oral communication and some difficulties faced by Japanese speakers. ‘Japanese speakers’ refers to Indonesians who work as Japanese-speaking staff in Japanese companies. The data was obtained through applying questioner methods, Focus Group Discussions, and followed by in-depth interviews with respondents. The research respondents were Japanese speakers at KIIC (Karawang International Industrial City) of West Java. This study shows that Japanese language competence plays a significant role in smooth communication in the Japanese industry, especially in tier 2 and 3 companies. Japanese oral communication activities include internal (shanai) and external communication (shagai). Communication is generally used for completing work carried out through discussions or meetings, presentations to superiors and customers, suppliers, and communication with Japanese colleagues. In addition, because the Horenso concept is still strongly applied as an organizational communication system, the need to communicate in Japanese for hookoku, renraku, and soodan purposes is also significant. The difficulties experienced by Japanese speakers are seen in the difficulty of choosing expressions appropriate to the context and purpose of the conversation. This is partly due to their lack of understanding of the application of the concepts of ningen kankei and uchi-soto in Japanese business communication practices. Employees who have business Japanese competencies have a greater chance of advancing their careers. This research will continue to be refined to obtain results with a strong foundation as a basis for consideration in compiling business Japanese language teaching materials and improving the applied Japanese language curriculum to suit the needs of today's workplace.

Abstract

This quantitative study investigates the impact of Japanese Pop Culture (JPC) on the motivation and Japanese language skills of Japanese language study program students in Indonesia. This research is based on theories about the role of pop culture in foreign language learning, especially the role of JPC in students' interest in Japanese. Questionnaires related to interest in learning Japanese, motivation to learn Japanese, activities associated with JPC outside of lectures, and improving Japanese language skills were distributed to 70 Japanese language study program students from several universities in Indonesia. The results of data analysis show that JPC plays a big role in motivating students to study Japanese and improve their Japanese language skills. Based on the questionnaire results, all respondents were interested in and liked JPC. Over half of the respondents were JPC fans before becoming Japanese language study program students. Regarding motivation to study Japanese, as many as 63% of students were motivated to become students in the Japanese language study program because they liked JPC before. More than 80% of respondents carry out JPC activities by watching anime and listening to Japanese music. Half of the respondents stated that they could get to know Japan and understand Japanese people better by consuming JPC. In contrast, more than 80% of respondents felt benefits in increasing their ability and understanding of Japanese after consuming JPC. It is hoped that the results of this research can be used as a basis or reference for further research on using JPC in Japanese language learning.

Abstract

This study examines Japan's diplomatic language strategies through Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's speech at the Japan-Ukraine Conference for Promotion of Economic Growth and Reconstruction. Using Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the research investigates how diplomatic language tools like politeness, modality, and metaphors construct Japan's international image as a committed and peace-oriented nation. The study focuses on three dimensions: text, discursive practices, and social practices, to analyze linguistic elements and their broader socio-political contexts. The findings highlight that Kishida employs specific linguistic choices to convey Japan's solidarity and support for Ukraine amidst geopolitical challenges. Through the use of modality, Kishida reinforces Japan's authoritative yet empathetic stance, framing its support as both a moral and strategic obligation. Politeness strategies are used to establish rapport and mitigate potential tensions, while metaphors such as "investment in the future" redefine Japan's contributions as mutually beneficial, transcending traditional aid narratives. The research reveals that Kishida's rhetoric strategically positions Japan within the global community as a reliable ally and a proactive participant in addressing international crises. By aligning linguistic strategies with Japan's foreign policy objectives, the speech reflects broader ideological constructs and power relations within global geopolitics. This study underscores the significance of diplomatic language as a tool for fostering international collaboration, enhancing Japan's global reputation, and promoting shared values of peace, stability, and economic development.
