Abstract

This paper studies the comparison between ~souda modality in Japanese and predictability modality in Indonesian. This paper also aims to analyze the structure, meaning, as well as the similarities and differences between the Japanese language modality and the Indonesian language modality. The data used in this research came from websites, news sites, novels and short stories. The research method used in this studies is descriptive qualitative. The results of this research indicate that the ~souda modality can be constructed with verbs and adjectives, and has an approximate meaning based on the sense of sight, information held, and excessive estimates; whereas the predictability modality can be constructed with verbs, adjectives, adverbs, verbal clauses, adjectival clauses, and nominal clauses, and have approximate meanings based on objective and subjective assessments. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that ~souda modality in Japanese and predictability modality in Indonesian: markers of predictability 'duga', 'kira', 'rasa’, 'pikir', 'tampaknya', 'kelihatannya', 'sepertinya', 'rasanya' have the same meaning, namely to express estimates, conjectures or suspicions about something, while the difference is that the -souda modality marker is directly constructed with the word it is attached to, while the predictability modality marker can be inserted with another word.

Abstract

This study explores the strategies Indonesian interns employ to enhance their Japanese language proficiency during internships in Japan. A qualitative research method was utilized, collecting data through an online survey from 90 respondents. The survey included information on personal characteristics, learning strategies, experiences, and challenges encountered during the learning process. Analysis revealed that most interns were male (86.7%) with a predominant age range of 26-30 years, most of whom had resided in Japan for over 2 years. While many had educational backgrounds equivalent to high school, their initial proficiency levels in Japanese varied, with most starting at level N4. Common learning strategies included self-study using media such as videos (including films and TV shows), reading Japanese textbooks, and practicing speaking with friends. Direct interaction with native Japanese speakers outside work contexts was also considered crucial. Despite relatively low participation in formal Japanese language classes, respondents found their chosen self-study methods to be effective. Primary challenges included time constraints and difficulties in grasping Japanese grammar. Effective strategies identified for improving Japanese language proficiency among interns encompass consistent self-directed learning, direct interaction with native speakers, and the use of relevant learning resources. The implications of this research underscore the importance of adapting to irregular work schedules and maintaining high motivation to achieve significant progress in mastering the Japanese language.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the interconnection between gender equality, education, and the workforce of Generation Z in Japan, South Korea, and Indonesia, focusing on their roles in sustainable development. With rapid technological advancement and globalization, Generation Z is expected to be the primary driver of future labor markets. However, challenges related to gender inequality, education gaps, and labor market readiness persist in these countries. This paper reviews recent literature to identify existing research gaps, particularly the lack of comprehensive studies integrating gender equality, education, and workforce development within the framework of sustainable development. Previous studies have focused on individual aspects, but there is limited research that holistically examines these factors across multiple countries with differing socio-economic contexts. By employing a qualitative approach, this study analyzes secondary data, government reports, and interviews with experts to examine how gender equality, educational access, and workforce preparedness can contribute to the achievement of sustainable development goals in these three nations. The research hypothesis suggests that inclusive education and stronger gender equality policies will improve the workforce readiness of Generation Z, ultimately accelerating sustainable development in Japan, South Korea, and Indonesia. The findings of this study aim to provide actionable policy recommendations to promote gender equity, educational inclusivity, and labor market readiness, thereby enhancing the long-term sustainability of these countries.

After that, it was processed again using Microsoft Excel to calculate the average duration of long vowels from the speakers' speech. The conclusion of this study is the duration of long vowels produced by students from the average obtained are: 149 ms on the vowel /aa/, 142 ms on the vowel /ii/, 127 ms on the vowel /uu/, 251 ms on the vowel /ee/, and 122 ms on the vowel /oo/. The duration mentioned above after being compared with native speakers the results tend to be shorter than native speakers. There are also significant differences with native speakers in some vowel positions in words such as the sound /_aa/ by AK (093 ms), JE (084 ms) and native speakers (195 ms).

Abstract

Healing fiction is a genre in literary works that has a theme about healing, both spiritually and emotionally. The characters who appear in the healing fiction genre are described as finding inner peace and trauma recovery through the process of self-introspection, courage to face problems, relationships with others and relationships with nature. The healing fiction genre with its narrative that depicts characters who finally find inner peace, allows readers to experience emotional catharsis. This research will look at how the narrative elements of the healing fiction genre can be a vehicle for readers to experience the cathartic process. This research will use the narrative text analysis approach of Japanese novels with the healing fiction genre. This research will also use a thematic analysis approach to find out readers' responses. Reading works in the healing fiction genre can be a cathartic medium because it presents a feeling of relief like what happens in the process of accidental pleasure.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the types of pragmatic failures that occur in beginner-level Japaneselanguage classes. The data was taken from conversation texts created by students in groups over one semester from two different universities. The utterances in the conversation text that were perceived to contain pragmatic failure were categorized and then verified through interviews with nativeJapanese speakers to understand the impressions they felt when hearing such utterances. Verifiedutterances containing pragmatic failure were then categorized into pragmalinguistic failure andsociopragmatic failure. It was discovered that even in simple contexts like self-introductions, therewere many pragmatic failures that had the potential to become Face Threatening Acts (FTA) againstthe positive and negative face of the interlocutor. In the case of basic Japanese students, pragmalinguistic failures are more commonly found than sociopragmatic failures. However, bothpragmalinguistic and sociopragmatic failures tend to be more of a face-threatening act against thepositive face of the interlocutor. The research finding reveals the linguistic characteristics thatthreaten the interlocutor's positive face include using first-person pronouns excessively, discriminatory questions about origin, and misusing specific Japanese words like "anata," "sayonara,""dare," and "kore" during introductions, incorrect responses to information and the absence ofhonorifics.

Abstract

This article discusses the use of the -ni shimasu pattern by beginner learners (1st year university students). The research purpose is described the uses of -ni shimasu pattern by beginner learners. The method is descriptive qualitative. The results are examples of students attaching nouns to the -ni shimasu pattern. Attaching adjectives are not used by students. The nouns used are related to food and drinks, transportation, clothing and accessories, and places. Students tend to provide example sentences by replacing nouns in the pattern without looking at the meaning formed from the sentence. In the use of nouns related to clothing and accessories, students use the theme of recycling in the example in Marugoto A2 basic level 1 as a reference. The results show students are already able to make example sentences using the -ni shimasu pattern but ignore the meaning of the sentence.

Abstract

Particles in Japanese have a vital position and are very difficult for Indonesian Japanese learners. Inaddition to appearing very often, they also mark verbal arguments, mark additions and have semanticattributes, topical phrases and mark additional attributive nominals which when studied are recordedin the working memory of our brains. This study attempts to see the error in particle selection in theworking memory thinking framework carried out by students who will become prospective Japaneselanguage teachers. This study uses a qualitative and quantitative method of analysing the results ofrespondents' work. We can conclude that these prospective teachers have not received enoughsystematic time and opportunity to be able to place various Japanese language particles in theirworking memory so that they can use the right particles whenever they are faced with the opportunityto use the particles.
