Abstract

This study examines cultural representation in two Indonesian grade 10 English textbooks, Bahasa Inggris "Work in Progress" and Pathway to English, within the context of the new Merdeka curriculum. It aims to explore differences in cultural content between the source culture (Indonesia) and the target culture (English-speaking countries) using Yuen’s (2011) content analysis framework. The findings reveal that Bahasa Inggris "Work in Progress" presents a more balanced portrayal by highlighting the source culture and incorporating international elements, especially through visuals. In contrast, Pathway to English predominantly emphasizes the target culture, offering a limited representation of Indonesian culture. This imbalance may hinder students’ cultural identity development while promoting global awareness. The study highlights the need for more balanced cultural representation in textbook design to enhance students’ cultural competence and suggests further research on how such materials influence students' cultural understanding.

Abstract

The current research depicts the points as pursue: 1) to portray the types of lexical collocations ascertained in the descriptive writings of the English Education students, 2) to represent the types of colloquial errors depicted in the descriptive writings of the English Education students, and 3) to descsribe the English Education students’ difficulties in allocating the lexicons in their descriptive writings. The present study has drawn on a descriptive-interpretative qualitative design on the linguistic behaviors (lexicons) and writing skill of the research subjects holistically on the bases of the contexts of the writings that have been previously offered. The data of the current study have been analyzed by means of the interactive model. This interactive model consists of three research pathways: data reduction, data display, and conclusion/ data verification that are integrated before, being and after the data are collected. Within this model, the entire data are not reviewed (reduced): the data reduction has been carried out in several ways, for instance by selecting the descriptive writings allied to the topic of this study, i.e., colloquial lexicons. Commencing the 8 available types of colloquial lexicons, 3 (three) lexicons are not countered by the research participants, to be precise: substitution, conjunction, and exclamation. Correspondingly, these colloquial lexicons are encoded by the research participants’ native (Indonesian) language intervention, lack of vocabulary, word-for-word translation and direct translation, ignorance of the rules on Indonesian and English, and lack of knowledge about the nature of collocations.

Abstract

This study sought to examine the suitability of texts in Ghanaian Senior High School English textbooks to their intended students. The textual data was culled from the Global Series English textbook series used in Ghanaian Senior High Schools for the teaching of the English language. Using a descriptive research design, within the constructivist research paradigm, the study revealed that there is gross arbitrary appropriation of texts in Ghanaian English textbooks to the intended learners as the readability levels of the sampled texts were found to be far above the intended grades of the students. Although the study is focused on senior high school, most of the texts (76%) were found to have readability levels suitable for undergraduate and postgraduate learners as they recorded very high (unreadable according to Flesch’s translated index) readability values. Only two percent (2%) of the texts were found to be suitable for their intended grades at the senior high school. The study concludes that readability tests should be conducted on texts in English textbooks before assigning them to students of various grades at the senior high school level in Ghana. KEYWORDS: English Textbook Readability, Grade Propriety, Arbitrary Text Appropriation, Ghana.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of technology has revolutionized education, leading to the widespread adoption of online learning platforms. Understanding the motivations and challenges faced by students engaged in online learning is essential in this evolving landscape. This research delves into the current phenomena of motivation and challenges in online learning, focusing specifically on the English department at One Islamic University in Indonesia. Through interviews with fourth-semester English students, valuable insights are gained regarding the factors that influence student motivation and the various challenges encountered in the online learning environment. The findings highlight a prevailing sense of boredom and disinterest among some students, stemming from monotonous material, difficulties in understanding lectures, and the lack of direct interaction with instructors. Furthermore, limitations inherent in online learning, such as poor internet connectivity and reliance on digital devices, impede engagement. Qualitative methods shed light on the importance of creating a supportive learning environment, addressing interaction and comprehension challenges, and leveraging external motivators to enhance student engagement and motivation in online learning. The research outcomes provide valuable guidance for educators and institutions seeking to optimize the online learning experience and foster academic success within the English department at One Islamic University in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the pedagogical value of group work in grammar classes. To this end, the study adopted three major interrelated criteria: grammar self-concept, grammar engagement, and grammar achievement. Methodologically, the study used a quasi-experimental design. Two intact groups of 72 students were randomly assigned to control and experimental groups. The experimental group benefited from group work activities while the control group relied on traditional whole-class instruction. The study used three research instruments: a Grammar Self-concept scale, a Grammar Engagement Scale, and a Grammar Achievement Test. The Independent Samples t-test results revealed statistically significant differences in favour of the experimental group in all three investigated variables. Additionally, the results showed that the experimental group marked a statistically significant improvement between the pre- and post-stages of the study in all three areas, which was not the case for the control group, particularly at the grammar self-concept and engagement levels.

Abstract

This study analyzes the impact of using Portuguese and Tetun as languages of instruction in primary and secondary schools in Dili, Timor Leste, and its implications for human resource development. While Tetun facilitates students' understanding in local contexts, its limited global relevance presents a challenge. Conversely, Portuguese, though internationally recognized, is not fluently spoken by most teachers and students, reducing the effectiveness of the teaching and learning process. This qualitative research involved 68 informants, including education officials, principals, teachers, and students across Dili. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings reveal that language barriers, particularly in Portuguese, negatively affect classroom interaction, leading to poor student comprehension and low academic achievement. This situation may hinder the development of quality human resources capable of competing globally. The study recommends that the Timor Leste government and Ministry of Education intensify Portuguese training for both teachers and students, allocate funds for Tetun development, offer incentives to high-performing teachers, and encourage the consistent use of the instructional Language at home and in school, drawing from practices in Cuba and Venezuela. Strengthening language proficiency among educators and learners is essential to improving education quality and supporting Timor-Leste's broader socio-economic advancement.

Abstract

The re-implementation of English as a compulsory subject at the elementary school (SD) and Madrasah Ibtidayah (MI) levels in the Merdeka Curriculum has caused a debate about its impact on educators and students. This study explores teachers' beliefs regarding this reimplementation and examines both challenges and benefits associated with teaching English at the elementary level. Data were collected using a qualitative approach through interviews with five teachers who are members of the MGMP (Subject Teacher Forum) Rayon 2 under the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Jambi City, Jambi. The findings highlight challenges such as administrative burdens, insufficient training, and resource limitations. However, teaching English early also provides benefits, including better preparation for advanced education and improved linguistic and interpersonal skills. These insights are crucial for policymakers to refine strategies supporting curriculum implementation.
