Abstract

Coccidiosis caused by Eimeria spp. is a parasitic disease that affects various animal species, including sheep. This study aimed to detect Eimeria spp. and the degree of infection in the fat-tailed sheep breed in Malang. This study used fecal samples from 62 fat-tailed sheep. Detection of Eimeria spp. was performed by using the flotation method and then observed the morphology of the oocysts found in the fecal samples of fat-tailed sheep. The positive sample was followed by the McMaster test to calculate oocysts per gram (OPG). The results showed that 20 (32%) samples were positively infected by Eimeria spp. with the degree of infection in the severe category.

Abstract

Etawah crossbreed and Senduro goats as superior local goats and biological genetic resources that must be preserved in Indonesia. Melanocortin receptor type 4 (MC4R) is the primary gene that regulates food intake and energy balance which can be used as a candidate marker for livestock selection genes. This study aimed to analyze the comparison of cement quality and detect the profile of the MC4R gene in Etawah crossbreed and Senduro goat semen. The samples of this study were Etawah crossbreed and Senduro goat semen. Macroscopic examination of cement includes the evaluation of volume, consistency, odor, color, and pH. Microscopic examination of semen includes motility, abnormalities, and spermatozoa concentration. Examination of motility was performed in the condition of fresh semen, after the addition of diluents, and post-thawing of frozen straw. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method was performed to amplify specific fragments of the MC4R gene. There was a decrease in spermatozoa motility before freezing and post-thawing frozen semen compared to fresh semen. The quality of frozen straw post-thawing Etawah crossbreed and Senduro goat was still worth using for artificial insemination and in vitro embryo production. The MC4R gene can be detected in liquid and frozen semen from Etawah crossbreed and Senduro goats using a PCR test in the form of a single band along 642 bp.

Abstract

Microplastics (MPs) are pollutant agents that have been absorbed and detected in aquatic ecosystems at high concentrations. This study aimed to investigate the presence of MPs pollution in green mussel (Perna viridis) products sold at the Kedonganan fish market, Badung, Bali. A total of 150 mussels with an average weight of 3,2 ± 0,71 g/mussels from three traders each composed and followed by the pre-treatment stage using 5 M NaCl solution, extraction with wet oxidation peroxidation (WPO) + Fe(II) catalyst and filtered. The highest percentage for the form of MPs was successively obtained by the Line form in Trader A at 85,42% and the lowest in Trader C at 50,00%. The highest form of fragments was obtained in Trader C at 42,86%. Film and filament forms were only obtained in Trader A. The highest MPs color was black and the lowest was gray. The highest average MPs particle size was found in the form of a filament of 1944,37 ± 88,41 μm which was found in Trader A. Estimates of MPs intake per year/capita in Indonesia showed that exposure to MPs through consumption of green mussels in this study amounted to 498,330 MPs/year/capita items. Overall, the green mussel from Trader A had the highest percentage and size of MPs, with the shape of fragment MPs being dominated by Trader C and the color of the MPs being dominated by black. MPs exposure to green mussel consumption in Indonesia is very high, but no health impact category has yet been found for this estimate.

Abstract

Freshwater fisheries product tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) has the potential to be developed and has a very high economic value, particularly in the city of Tarakan. Fish ectoparasites are a problem that frequently occurs and is discovered in aquaculture. This study aimed to determine the type of ectoparasites that infect tilapia in aquaculture ponds in Kampung Satu and Sebengkok. The technique involved collecting tilapia samples from various ponds and then transporting them to the laboratory. A total of 30 samples were taken from the container that was set up on a tray, and they were all put to death by being stabbed in the brain nerves. It was done to identify ectoparasites on the gills, eyes, scales, and fins of the fish. Two forms of ectoparasites, Dactylogyrus sp. and Trichodina sp., which were only present in the gills, were identified in the tilapia. In the moderate infection group, the prevalence rate in Kampung Satu was 86%, and in the very frequent infection category, it was 66% in Sebengkok. In Kampung Satu, the level of ectoparasites was 3,84, which is considered low, and 8,30, which is considered medium, in Sebengkok.

Abstract

This study reported the diagnosis and treatment of Strongyloidiasis in two Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus); adult male aged 23 years, weighing 100 kg and an infant female orangutan, 4 years old, weighing 13,6 kg. Samples were physically and laboratory examined for faeces using the Mini-FLOTAC method. Therapy was performed on the adult orangutan using albendazole at a dose of 400 mg individual twice a day for 4 days, orally. The infant orangutan was administered albendazole at a dose of 10 mg/kg BW once a day for 3 days orally. From several physical examinations, both orangutans looked active, body temperature and oral mucosa color were normal, green feces with solid consistency in the adult orangutan and brown with solid consistency in the infant orangutan. Microscopic faeces examination of the adult orangutan showed Strongyloides sp. as many as 1005 eggs per gram (EPG) of feces, and the infant orangutan as many as 2490 larvae per gram of feces. Both orangutans were diagnosed with severe Strongyloidiasis based on those examinations. Three days after starting treatment, the adult orangutan's EPG decreased to 890, and a week later, no Strongyloides sp. eggs or larvae were discovered. A week following treatment, no Strongyloides sp. was discovered in an infant orangutan. In conclusion, albendazole was an effective treatment for severe Strongyloidiasis in adult and infant orangutans. Strongyloidiasis can be a threat to both infant and adult orangutans without distinct clinical symptoms.
