Abstract

Municipal solid waste (MSW) disposed of in landfills contains a significant proportion of organic fraction that decomposes into soil-like materials that can be potentially recovered and reused. Landfill mining is an emerging strategy to recover these materials from older waste deposits. Integration of these materials into circular waste practices can therefore reduce landfill volume and recover valuable resources. However, given the heterogeneous nature of waste deposited in landfills over time, concerns arise about the quality and safety of the soil-like material, particularly when intended for use as compost or organic fertilizer. In this study, soil-like material samples (n=4) were collected from two landfill age groups, i.e., younger piles (16–20 years) and older piles (21–25 years). Samples were characterized for chemical properties, physical characteristics, and heavy metal content. The results were then compared with the Indonesian National Standards (SNI) 19-7030-2004 for organic domestic compost and SNI 7763:2024 for solid organic fertilizer. Findings revealed that total NPK content in older material (0.80 ± 0.35%) met the NPK threshold for organic domestic compost (≥ 0.70%), whereas younger material (0.40 ± 0.17%) failed. Both age groups failed the NPK requirement for solid organic fertilizer (≥ 2). Furthermore, cadmium (Cd) concentrations in both younger (39.81 ± 11.32 mg/kg) and older (33.47 ± 12.60 mg/kg) materials severely exceeded regulatory thresholds (≤ 3 mg/kg for compost; ≤ 2 mg/kg for fertilizer). Lead (Pb) concentrations (11.32 ± 7.92 mg/kg and 21.43 ± 11.38 mg/kg) complied with statutory standards across both groups. These findings indicate that while mined soil like materials possess resource potential, post-recovery treatments, including inert screening, nutrient enrichment, and heavy metal remediation, are essential prior to land application.

Abstract

Land conversion impacts reducing the catchment area and increasing surface runoff. The zero delta Q policy (ZDQP) regulates that each building manages runoff water within the building area. This study aims to design zero runoff stormwater management system and assess their theoretical effectiveness based on the developmental research approach from Richey & Klein, (2005) that was adapted into an engineering design framework for water infrastructure (Mays, 2011). The methodology involves three technical stages: site assessment, hydrological design and evaluation, and design validation. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, documentation, and interviews. Observations were made to complete the data needed in the study. Documentation was conducted to collect data related to zero runoff concept technology application. Interviews were conducted with the Head of the Hospital Facility Maintenance Installation to determine the application of the zero-runoff concept. The conclusion of this study is the result of the redesign using the zero-runoff concept by applying rainwater tanks, infiltration wells, bioretention, and permeable pavement, which theoretically can reduce runoff by 50.17%.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Variations in filtration media and hydraulic retention time are important factors in optimizing wastewater quality improvement. The objective of this study is to recommend the optimal height level of gravel and silica sand (SiO2) combination and contact time in physical treatment methods for improving the quality of coffee processing wastewater. Three height-level variations of the gravel–silica sand filtration media combination were tested, namely 10:5 cm (T1), 7.5:7.5 cm (T2), and 5:10 cm (T3), along with two flow rate variations of 5.5 mL/second and 9.5 mL/second. All treatments were conducted in three replications to determine the standard error of the experimental data. The best-performing treatment was a combination of 5 cm gravel and 10 cm silica sand (T3) at a flow rate of 5.5 mL/second, which reduced turbidity, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), ammonia (NH3), and phosphate (PO4) by 61.65±1.43%, 49.00±6.66%, 50.66±4.35%, 53.75±4.35%, and 76.99±4.54%, respectively, at a hydraulic retention time of 4 hours. The height level of the gravel and silica sand (SiO2) media, along with the optimum hydraulic retention time, had a positive effect on reducing pollutant content in coffee processing wastewater.

Abstract

Environmental quality remains uneven across Indonesian provinces, while the effectiveness of subnational environmental expenditure is uncertain because it may depend on institutional conditions and cross-regional linkages. This study aims to assess how provincial environmental-function expenditure affects environmental quality in Indonesia while accounting for spatial dependence and the moderating roles of per capita income and regional democracy. This study examines a panel of 33 provinces from 2011 to 2019 using the STIRPAT framework and a dynamic spatial autoregressive (SAR) panel model with fixed effects. The conditional marginal effect of expenditure is jointly evaluated with its interactions with per capita income and democracy at the median values of both moderators. The combined conditional marginal effect is small and statistically insignificant for the environmental quality index (IKLH), air quality index (IKU), and water quality index (IKA). Within that combined effect, the baseline expenditure component is negative and significant for IKLH and IKU; the expenditure-democracy interaction is positive and significant; and the expenditure-income interaction is insignificant. Spatial dependence is detected for all three outcomes, but indirect expenditure effects are generally smaller than direct effects; a significant spillover appears mainly for short-run air quality. The results imply that larger budgets alone do not guarantee better environmental quality. Budget-use quality, democratic institutional capacity, and cross-regional coordination are essential for converting environmental expenditure into measurable outcomes.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Active involvement of all sectors of society is essential for effective waste management, particularly in addressing non biodegradable waste. Although the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) framework has been widely promoted and supported by the establishment of community-based waste banks to facilitate recycling activities, public participation in utilizing these facilities remains limited. This study aims to investigate the determinants of waste bank utilization intention by extending the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) with stimulus-based factors derived from the Stimulus Organism–Response (SOR) framework. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire survey involving 175 respondents. The variables examined include attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, environmental knowledge, and waste bank knowledge. Data analysis was conducted using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results show that attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control have a significant positive effect on waste bank utilization intention, with attitude being the most influential determinant (β = 0.353). In addition, environmental knowledge (β = 0.426) and waste bank knowledge (β = 0.392) significantly influence attitudes toward waste bank utilization. The proposed model demonstrates moderate explanatory power, explaining 64.3% of the variance in waste bank utilization intention and 50.1% of the variance in attitude. Overall, these findings indicate that the extended TPB effectively explains waste bank utilization intention in the Pantai Indah Kapuk area, with knowledge serving as a key antecedent of attitude, which in turn contributes to waste bank utilization intention.
