Abstract

Background: The design of the implant is a crucial factor that can impact the initial stability of the implant. Nevertheless, the current evidence is inadequate in establishing the most suitable dental implant design for cases with low bone quality to obtain the optimal amount of implant stability despite the availability of various options. Objective: The study aimed to perform a systematic review to assess the effect of different implant macro-geometry on primary stability in low bone density. Materials and Methods: The search strategy included both in vitro and in vivo studies published in PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Scopus from 2015 to 2024. The inclusion criteria were in vitro and in vivo studies, studies that evaluate implant primary stability by implant stability quotient (ISQ), insertion torque (IT), or removal torque (RT) value, studies that compare design thread in low bone density within the same study, and studies published in English. Results: 208 manuscripts were retrieved from the electronic literature search, and 11 studies met the eligibility criteria and were selected for this study. Conclusions: The results of this review suggested that an implant with a tapered body shape, square thread, and double-threaded feature significantly affects the primary stability of the implant in low bone density. It has become apparent that implant shape and thread geometry are critical parameters when designing new implant designs.

Abstract

Introduction – Pendahuluan: Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease in the oral cavity commonly experienced by the Indonesian population. In addition to therapeutic periodontal therapy, preventive care is also needed, such as plaque control by brushing teeth and using mouthwash. Plectranthus amboinicus leaves are a plant used by some Indonesian communities as herbal medicine. Plectranthus amboinicus is one of the plants that is known to have antibacterial activity. Objective – Tujuan: To determine the inhibitory activity of hexane fraction extract of P. amboinicus leaves against F. nucleatum bacteria. Methods – Metode: Fusobacterium nucleatum bacteria were treated with hexane fraction extract of P. amboinicus leaves at concentrations of 25%, 50%, and 75% for 24 hours to measure the diameter of the inhibition zone, followed by statistical tests, namely Post Hoc Test to see differences in each treatment group. Results – Hasil: Phytochemical testing results showed that the hexane fraction extract of P. amboinicus leaves contained active compounds such as phenols, steroids, tannins, and alkaloids. Among the three concentrations of hexane fraction used, the 75% concentration exhibited the greatest inhibitory activity against F. nucleatum. Conclusion – Kesimpulan: Hexane fraction extract of P. amboinicus leaves possesses inhibitory activity against F. nucleatum bacteria.

Abstract

Smoking not only has systemic effects but also lead to the development of pathological conditions in the oral cavity. Long-term smoking habits and the carcinogenic substances in cigarettes can decrease the development of epithelial cells and enhance cell apoptosis. Cell death or apoptosis can be characterized by changes in the cell nucleus in form of karyorrhexis and karyopyknosis. Method: This analytical observational research using exfoliative cytology examination with scraping technique was done to evaluate the number and percentage of karyorrhexis and karyopyknosis of oral mucosal epithelial cells. As much as 60 research subjects were used in this study which divided into 30 smokers and 30 non-smokers. Two slides were created from each oral buccal mucous epithelium cell smears that delivered to the laboratory for Papanicolaou staining. Cells observation was conducted in three fields of each slide to evaluate the percentage of cells experiencing karyorrhexis and karyopyknosis. Results: karyorrhexis and karyopyknosis was found higher in smoking subjects. There was significant difference in the number of oral mucosal epithelial cells that undergo kariopyknosis (p=0.005<0.05) and karyorrhexis (p=0.001 <0.05) between smokers and non-smokers group. Conclusion: Smoking can be a causing factor for the cell death in form of an increase of karyopyknosis and karyorrhexis of cells.

Abstract

Introduction – Pendahuluan: Hypertension (HT), a leading cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, affects a significant portion of the global population and is a major public health concern. Periodontitis is a multifactorial chronic inflammatory disease involving tooth-supporting structures Objective – Tujuan: This study aims to evaluate the relationship between the severity of periodontitis and the prevalence of hypertension in an adult population. Methods – Metode: A retrospective cross-sectional study from medical records was conducted in this study. Data taken from medical records were age, gender, blood pressure, bleeding on probing, anti-hypertension drugs consumed by the patient, periodontitis diagnosis based on the 2017 classification, and history of other systemic diseases. This study involved 144 adult patients diagnosed with periodontitis, classified by staging (I-IV) and grading (A-C) Results – Hasil: Hypertension's impact on periodontitis severity becomes more evident with advancing age. HT group exhibited a higher prevalence of severe periodontitis (Stages III and IV) compared to normotensive patients (p=0.000), particularly among older age groups (45-60 years (p=0.029) and >60 years (p=0.038)). HT groups are more likely to exhibit Grade C periodontitis(p=0.04). HT patients demonstrate worse periodontal parameters that could contribute to accelerated disease progression and more severe outcomes. Conclusion – Kesimpulan: There is an association between the staging and grading of periodontitis and hypertension. These findings underscore the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in the management of periodontal and cardiovascular health to improve overall health outcomes. Keywords – Kata Kunci: Periodontitis, blood pressure, hypertension.

Abstract

Abstract

Introduction. Nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) is a malignant condition of the nasopharynx. The cancer therapy given is usually radiotherapy (RT), chemotherapy (CT), or a combination of RT and CT. Cancer therapy and poor oral hygiene can lead to susceptibility to fungal infections, one of which is pseudomembranous kandidiasis (thrush). The aim of this report was to present oral pseudomembrane kandidiasis patient with nasopharynx cancer. Case report. A 52-year-old female patient was referred to the hospital's dental clinic with complaints of a white coating on the inside of her cheeks, roof of the mouth, and tongue since ± 1 week ago. The patient feels pain when swallowing and discomfort when opening the mouth. The results of clinical and supporting examinations showed that the patient was diagnosed with oral pseudomembranous kandidiasis. The patient was treated using nystatin drop and chlorhexidine gluconate 0.2% Conclusion. The NPC patient in this case was diagnosed with pseudomembranous kandidiasis (thrush) caused by Candida albicans. Early management of cases of pseudomembranous kandidiasis in NPC patients was very important so that the lesion would not disrupt the general condition of the patient as a whole. Collaboration and coordination from various specialist divisions were needed.
