Abstract

This study analyzed the mediamorphosis of Aula Magazine from a postcolonial perspective to examine how an Islam Nusantara media outlet maintained its existence, cultural identity, and epistemic autonomy amid the hegemony of global digital media. Mediamorphosis was conceptualized as a process of negotiating the epistemic position of local Islamic media within a digital landscape dominated by Western media values and knowledge structures. A qualitative approach with a constructivist paradigm was employed. Data were collected through interviews with key participants and documentation of Aula Magazine’s transformation and were analyzed inductively to identify the strategic dimensions of mediamorphosis. The findings indicated that Aula implemented three main strategies. First, co-evolution was achieved by expanding its presence across digital platforms and social media to create alternative spaces for Islamic discourse. Second, convergence was realized through the development of the majalahaula.id news portal, which integrated journalism, da’wah, and Islam Nusantara perspectives. Third, complexity was reflected in audience participation, contributor engagement, and content designed to attract younger readers. These strategies demonstrated that Aula’s mediamorphosis not only sustained its institutional existence but also functioned as symbolic resistance to digital colonialism by preserving and disseminating Indonesian Islamic knowledge. The study’s novelty lay in interpreting mediamorphosis as a strategy for both symbolic resistance and epistemic survival.

Abstract

The platform of religious moderatism continues to be widely used in the university context as a means to spread wasathiyah religious ideas. This study explores the role of religious institutional activities in fostering religious moderation as a strategic response to the growing influence of transnational Islamic ideologies within Indonesian higher education. Focusing on three prominent public universities Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ), and Universitas Negeri Malang (UM). This qualitative research employs a multiple case study approach supported by document analysis, Focus Group Discussion, and observation. The findings reveal that while each institution adopts distinct approaches shaped by their unique socio-cultural and ideological contexts, all three share a commitment to embedding the principles of religious moderation into religious activities. UPI institutionalizes religious programs within the academic structure, UNJ emphasizes inclusivity and diversity, whereas UM integrates values of tolerance and contextual learning. The study affirms that structured mentoring programs rooted in the university’s religious and cultural frameworks are instrumental in shaping students’ moderate religious outlooks. The implications suggest that religious moderation must be mainstreamed into curricular and extracurricular domains through policies that respect institutional contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the relationship between Islamic asceticism, the internalization of spiritual values, psychological motivation, and the entrepreneurial behavior of students at Roudhotul Muttaqin Islamic Boarding School, Mojokerto. A qualitative case study approach was employed, utilizing in-depth interviews, observations, documentation, and focus group discussions (FGDs) involving eight informants. The findings reveal that the practice of Islamic asceticism through dhikr, wirid, voluntary prayers, and the internalization of values such as sincerity (ikhlas), patience (sabr), trust in God (tawakkul), steadfastness (istiqamah), asceticism (zuhud), and gratitude (shukr) fosters a spiritually grounded work ethic among students engaged in aquaculture activities. Entrepreneurial activities are understood not merely as economic endeavors but also as a form of da'wah bil hal (preaching through action) and tazkiyat al-nafs (spiritual purification), cultivating discipline, mental resilience, honesty, and social responsibility. Business setbacks are interpreted as opportunities for muhasabah (self-reflection) and spiritual learning, strengthening the character of resilient entrepreneurs. This study proposes a Sufism-based entrepreneurship model grounded in the psychology of da'wah, linking Islamic asceticism, spiritual motivation, and entrepreneurial behavior while reinforcing the paradigm of transformative da'wah through productive spirituality.

Abstract

Deaf people face serious challenges in the context of Islamic religious learning. Inappropriate Islamic religious teachings result in an incomplete understanding of the teachings that must be practiced in daily life. In some cases, this incomplete understanding leads to behavior that is inappropriate or even contradictory to Islamic religious teachings. This study aims to identify various problems faced by deaf people and the strategies for mediatizing Islamic religious teachings to optimize their acceptance of these teachings. This study was conducted in East Java. The method used was qualitative, with data collection techniques involving interviews, observation, and documentation. This study finds that the fundamental problems faced by deaf people include cultural issues, psychological issues, family parenting patterns, negative stigma, and unsupportive policies. Possible mediatization strategies include using a humanitarian approach to convey religious messages, creating a system that supports the acceptance of Islamic religious materials, optimizing the role of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, and optimizing the role of Islamic community-based organizations. The solution should be implemented according to a disability-centred paradigm, which encompasses both social and religious dimensions. Religious experience involving the body, sign language, and media constitutes a lived and embodied Islamic approach for Deaf people.

Abstract

This article examines the concepts of nūr (light) and ẓulmah (darkness) in the thought of Ibn 'Aṭā'illāh as-Sakandarī and their implications for Islamic psychology. While historical studies of the Islamic soul (nafs) frequently emphasize ontological descriptions and normative ethics, they rarely articulate the functional dynamics through which spiritual components produce moral behavior. Addressing this gap, this study conceptually reconstructs the operational roles of nūr and ẓulmah in relation to the 'aql (intellect), baṣīrah (spiritual insight), and qalb (heart). Employing qualitative content analysis, the study systematically unitizes, categorizes, and synthesizes primary textual data from al-Ḥikam and its authoritative classical commentaries. The findings indicate that the human psyche is structured by internal faculties interacting with transcendental epistemic inputs (nūr) and egoistic distortions (ẓulmah). Nūr manifests in graduated forms (intibāh, iqbāl, wiṣāl) that progressively enhance moral cognition and activate the baṣīrah. Conversely, ẓulmah operates through base desires that obscure ethical orientation. Rather than positioning this framework in binary opposition to contemporary psychology, the study places as-Sakandarī in constructive dialogue with psychoanalysis and positive psychology, highlighting how Islamic psychology introduces a theocentric dimension to internal conflict and human flourishing. Ultimately, this study offers a conceptual reconstruction that bridges classical Shadhiliyyah thought with modern discourse on moral development, providing a theoretical foundation relevant to contemporary Islamic educational and therapeutic settings

Abstract

This article examines the reconstruction of al-Ghazālī’s integrative epistemology of Islamic law through qualitative library research, using Iḥyā’ ‘Ulūm al-Dīn as the primary text and employing the analytical framework of bayānī, burhānī, and ‘irfānī epistemologies. The study reveals that al-Ghazālī consistently integrates Sufi ethics and burhānī logic into the discourse of fiqh, uncovering the inner meanings behind the formal structures of law. The synergy between bayānī reasoning (scriptural-normative), burhānī reasoning (rational-philosophical), and ‘irfānī reasoning (mystical-intuitive) produces an integral epistemological construction of fiqh in which law is inseparable from moral and spiritual dimensions, forming a unified and integrative epistemic system. This article further proposes a reconstruction of modern Islamic legal epistemology through three major agendas: the transformation of bayānī into maqāṣid-oriented ethical guidance, the emancipation of burhānī through critical engagement with modernity, and the humanization of ‘irfānī as a transformative spiritual ethic. Such an integrative epistemology enables fiqh to move beyond rigid legalistic dogma and emerge as a liberating and humanistic spirit of Islamic law.

Abstract

This article examines methodological renewal in Ashʿarite kalam by developing a more explicit conceptual model of epistemological reconstruction. Using an integrative review, the study analyzes 50 core sources selected from classical theological works, peer-reviewed journal articles, and international academic books published mainly between 2000 and 2026, with classical texts used as foundational references. The review asks how Bayani, Burhani, and irfani epistemologies can be operationalized to transform Ashʿarite kalam from a primarily defensive-dialectical discipline into a reconstructive, dialogical, and ethically responsive theology. In response to the need for clearer library-research reporting, the findings are presented through a coding matrix that maps title/author/year, data source or object, conceptual focus, main findings, and thematic codes. The findings produce a triadic reconstruction model: Bayani functions as textual anchoring, Burhani as rational-coherence testing, and irfani as ethical-spiritual orientation. The novelty of this article lies not in repeating the general integration of Islamic epistemologies, but in translating al-jabiri’s epistemic categories into an operational model for contemporary Ashʿarite theological reasoning. This model clarifies how classical Sunni theology can engage modern issues such as scientific rationality, pluralism, human dignity, and technology ethics without abandoning its doctrinal identity.

Abstract

Debates concerning women’s roles in public and domestic spheres remain a dynamic and contested issue within Muslim societies. This study seeks to negotiate the competing paradigms that support and oppose women’s positioning in these two domains by employing feminist hermeneutics and the qirāʾah mubādalah approach. The research adopts a historical–factual design based on a library research method. Data are collected through systematic documentation of relevant texts and analyzed using a descriptive qualitative approach, with validity ensured through source triangulation and data cross-checking. The findings indicate that a proportional reinterpretation of women’s public and domestic roles requires a transformation in mindset among both men and women, enabling each to optimize their respective potentials and contributions. Gender equality is understood not as a fixed or static endpoint, but as a dynamic and evolving condition in which men and women share balanced rights, obligations, roles, and opportunities grounded in mutual respect. The study emphasizes several foundational principles: reciprocity (mubādalah) in gender relations, the central role of education as a cornerstone of gender equality, and the synergistic relationship between public and domestic roles. Accordingly, both men and women possess the legitimate right to determine and perform roles that correspond to their capacities, potentials, and personal choices, whether within the family or in the broader social sphere.

Abstract

This article examines Al-Ghazali’s epistemology of religion with particular attention to the relationship between reason and revelation. Contrary to the common portrayal of Al-Ghazali as an opponent of philosophy, it argues that he develops an epistemological framework that transcends the classical dichotomy between rationalism and theological authority. Employing a historical-conceptual reconstruction of key texts, including Iḥyāʾ ʿUlūm al-Dīn, Tahāfut al-Falāsifah, Al-Qisṭās al-Mustaqīm, Al-Munqidh min al-Ḍalāl, and Qānūn al-Taʾwīl, the study demonstrates that Al-Ghazali does not merely reconcile reason and revelation but assigns each a distinct epistemic function. Reason serves not only as an interpretive instrument but also as a means of verifying prophetic legitimacy, thereby establishing the epistemic authority of revelation. On this basis, the article argues that Al-Ghazali’s thought offers a dialogical and integrative model of religious knowledge in which rational inquiry and revelation operate within a single epistemic framework. This finding contributes not only to Ghazalian studies but also to contemporary philosophy of religion by proposing an alternative to both rationalist and fideistic approaches to religious justification
