Abstract

Background: Stunting is a developmental failure that occurs due to poor nutrition in the past, and almost 25% of children under five worldwide experience it. The World Health Organization determined that stunting in the world was <20% in 2018, while it was 30.8% in Indonesia. Cookies are meals liked by people of all ages and can be given to eradicate stunting. They can be processed from various food ingredients that have rich protein content. Objectives: This study aimed to determine  cookie acceptance for protein content for stunted children Methods: The experimental research used a completely randomized design (CRD) for five treatments: formulations A, B, C, D, and E, with three repetitions. The acceptance test was also carried out on 15 stunted toddlers using the Comstock test (food scraps). The selected cookie formulations were tested for protein content using the Kjehdal method. Data analysis was continued using the variance analysis (ANOVA) test, followed by the Duncan method. Results: The results of the ANOVA test showed that cookies significantly influenced the level of aromatic aspect (p=0.011) and contained 12.91 grams of protein. Duncan's test showed significant differences in cookies' taste and aroma (treatments C and A). Conclusions: Treatment A, which has certain cookies' formulation and sensory characteristics, i.e., color, texture, taste, and aroma, contains higher protein and contributes to the adequacy of nutrition in children aged 3-5 years by 57.37%.

Abstract

Background: Anemia is a common health problem among adolescents that needs to be resolved immediately. It is estimated that more than 50% of female adolescents aged 12-15 years have anemia. Some of the anemia's effects on adolescents include stunted growth, decreased learning ability, and susceptibility to infectious diseases. Objectives: To identify evidence for nutrition education's effectiveness on anemia knowledge and hemoglobin levels in female adolescents aged 12 to 19. Methods: Using study eligibility criteria, three electronic databases (Scopus, Science Direct, and Pubmed) were searched within five years for relevant articles. Review Manager (RevMan) version 5.4.1 was used to analyze the research findings. Results: Based on the results, there was no significant relationship between education and anemia knowledge in the control and treatment groups (p<0.05). Neither group also had a significant relationship between nutrition education and Hb concentration. However, the Active, Creative, Effective, and Fun Learning or Pembelajaran Aktif, Kreatif, Efektif, dan Menyenangkan (PAKEM) program approach impacted adolescent anemia knowledge. The mean difference value of 0, which indicates the intervention group is more effective than the control group, presented significant results. The estimated effect can be seen in the forest plot image to the left of the vertical line. Conclusions: Based on the meta-analysis, the PAKEM method is a nutritional education method that provides significant results on female adolescents' knowledge regarding anemia and Fe tablet consumption. However, the nutritional education method did not affect hemoglobin levels.

Abstract

Background: Various factors have influenced exclusive breastfeeding, but the practice remains low globally. In the Tengger community, several studies have shown that 79% of mothers provide colostrum, but only 60% succeed in practicing exclusive breastfeeding. Another study also showed that the prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding in toddlers was 38%. Objectives: Analyzed the relationship between mothers' knowledge and family support with exclusive breastfeeding for children under two years in Tengger Community. Methods: The study was analytical observational with case-control design. The proposal was outlined in February, and the research was carried out until July 2022. Used the total sampling technique and the sample consisted of 57 infant mothers, 28 mothers in the control group, and 29 mothers in the case group. Conducted in the Tengger community, Pasuruan Regency, East Java. Interview and questionnaire as data collection. Results: Mothers were between 20–34 years old, having good knowledge (67.9%) and good family support (75%). A weak negative correlation existed between maternal knowledge and exclusive breastfeeding (r=-0.05). Very weak positive correlation between family support and exclusive breastfeeding (r=0.139). Among the components of family support, emotional support had a moderately strong positive correlation (r=0.41), the information had a very weak positive correlation (r=0.228), the assessment had a very weak positive correlation (r=0.208), and instrumental had a very weak negative correlation (r=-0.15). These results are from Spearman correlation tests. Conclusion: Higher maternal knowledge has a feeble influence on exclusive breastfeeding, but more excellent family support has a more substantial influence. Maternal knowledge and family support play vital roles in promoting exclusive breastfeeding.

Abstract

Background: The Republic of Indonesia has a flag-hoisting team at the independence ceremony known as Paskibraka. Good nutritional status is one of the conditions for becoming a Paskibraka. Food consumption level and physical activity are factors that affect nutritional status. Objectives: This research aimed to determine the relationship between food consumption level and physical activity towards the nutritional status of students taking Paskibraka Extracurricular at SMAN 1 Bangkalan. Methods: This research used quantitative correlational research using a cross-sectional approach. The total sampling method was used to select 56 samples from students joining Paskibraka extracurriculars aged 15-16. While the independent variables included food consumption levels and physical activity, the dependent variable was nutritional status. The instruments were the respondent identity questionnaire, SQ-FFQ (Semiquantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire), and GPAQ (Global Physical Activity Questionnaire). The data were analyzed using Spearman's rank correlation.  Results: This research found that students' food consumption levels were normal (energy=76.8%, protein=58.9%, fat=73.21%, carbohydrates=69.64%). It also revealed that 75% had moderate physical activity and 89.29% had good nutritional status. Food consumption levels (energy p=0.011, fat p=0.024, and carbohydrates p=0.003) correlated with nutritional status, but protein consumption levels (p=0.141) and physical activity (p=0.626) did not correlate with it. Conclusions: Food consumption levels (energy, fats, and carbohydrates) correlated with nutritional status, but protein consumption and physical activity did not. A Paskibraka extracurricular student must pay attention to their daily food consumption and physical activity to have a good nutritional status.

Abstract

Background: Positive Deviance Heart (PDH) focuses on processes identifying affordable, acceptable, and sustainable practices used in communities with limited resources. One of PDH's goals is to prevent malnutrition in children by changing societal norms regarding parenting behavior, feeding practices, and health care behavior. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of PDH implementation in urban areas by assessing nutritional status alteration and changes in child feeding practices. Methods: This quantitative study with a descriptive-analytic approach used secondary data from a three-month PDH intervention conducted by Wahana Visi, Indonesia. Locations and participants were determined by a purposive sampling method. Twenty-nine (29) participants from three urban villages in Surabaya were involved. Data analysis was performed using frequency distribution, ANOVA, and Chi-square test (95% Confidence Interval). Results:  The PDH implementation in Simokerto Sub-district did not significantly improve the children's nutritional status. Changes in child feeding practices during the Hearth did not significantly affect children's nutritional status (p>0.05). There were differences (p<0.05) in Z-score alteration based on the time of weighing with or without considering the age groups and the children's residence (p<0.05). Conclusions: The three-month PDH sessions in the Simokerto Sub-district have not been effective in increasing the target of nutritional status. Changes in child feeding practices were not associated with increased children's nutritional status. Based on the time of weighing, the PDH's intervention periods can improve the target of nutritional status.

Abstract

Background: Breast milk is optimal for infant nutrition, and to ensure its sustained practice, maternal assistance from partners is essential, so that the breastfeeding process runs according to the expectations of the couple. Objectives: To identify the forms of support offered by partners for breastfeeding continuity. Methods: This research was conducted through a systematic review of qualitative research using three databases, namely PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect, published from 2014 to 2023. The JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist for Qualitative Research was utilized to critically evaluate the included publications, resulting in the inclusion of five studies. Results: Within the breastfeeding context, "husband support" can refer to several types of assistance, including emotional support, seeking breastfeeding information, helping with the mother's work, assisting in parenting responsibilities, and confiding in the mother and financial support. Only two of the seven studies indicated receiving financial support to replace the husband's role. Support from a partner makes a mother feel more confident about breastfeeding her baby. A positive response from the partner will help the mother feel more comfortable while breastfeeding her child. Conclusions: This systematic review provides a valuable reference for future research development by considering the phenomenon of spousal support for breastfeeding participation.

Abstract

Background: The strawberry is an antioxidant-rich fruit with the potential to prevent COVID-19, especially in the elderly. However, the fruit's high-water content makes it susceptible to decay and diminishes its quality. Product diversification into instant powder with a spray drying method and the addition of maltodextrin is one possible solution. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of maltodextrin concentration on the physical properties of strawberry powder produced by spray drying. Methods: The experimental study employed a completely randomized design and three maltodextrin concentrations: P1 (20%), P2 (25%), and P3 (30%). Organoleptic data were gathered using a questionnaire with a 1 to 9 hedonic scale scoring method. 35 students from the sixth and eighth semesters of Nutrition at Binawan University served as panelists. Results: The addition of maltodextrin to strawberry powder significantly altered the powder's flavor, aroma, texture, and color. The solubility test revealed that the strawberry powders P1, P2, and P3 were water-soluble. The selected strawberry powder contained 5.08% moisture, 1.05% ash, 1.13% protein, 0.02% fat, and 92.73% carbohydrates, according to approximative analysis results. The results revealed that the antioxidant levels of P1 (20%), P2 (25%), and P3 (30%) were 7.95 ppm, 8.07 ppm, and 8.36 ppm, respectively. Conclusions: When added, maltodextrin at a concentration of 30% produces the best possible physical properties.
