Abstract

Background: Exclusive breastfeeding is the cornerstone of infant health and one of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The advancement of information technology can be used to promote health, and providing information through messages on smartphone applications can improve breastfeeding awareness and adherence. Objectives: To determine which social media platforms effectively promote exclusive breastfeeding through nutrition education interventions. Methods: This study employed a meta-analysis method. The terms “breastfeeding,” “social media,” and “smartphone” were used to search for articles in multiple electronic journals, such as Scopus, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. Articles that provide an intervention using smartphone media for groups of expectant mothers who wish to breastfeed their babies and mothers who have ceased breastfeeding and want to resume were selected. Forest plot analysis was performed using the STATA 12. Results: From 2018 to 2021, seven articles were obtained, with research conducted in the United States, India, Indonesia, Israel, and Brazil. The study’s findings revealed that a nutritional education intervention using Smartphones led to an average success rate of exclusive breastfeeding between the intervention group and the control group of 1.23 (7 studies), 95% CI (1.08 - 1.39); P = 0.000; and I2 = 97.1%. Conclusions: Intervention using smartphones by sending short messages daily and counselling by telephone every week can increase mothers’ knowledge and ability to provide exclusive breastfeeding to their infants. An intervention using smartphones to transmit daily text messages and weekly telephone counselling could enhance mothers’ knowledge and ability to breastfeed their children exclusively.

Abstract

Background: High school students at Islamic Boarding Schools (IBS) are continuing their learning activities at school during the COVID-19 pandemic, with the option to live either at home or in the dormitory. These differing living conditions may have an impact on individual dietary diversity scores (IDDS) and nutritional status. Objectives: To compare the IDDS and nutritional status of IBS students between dormitory living and home living during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This study was conducted using a cross-sectional design involving 232 boys and girls (116 residing in the dormitory and 116 residing at home) aged 16-18 years, from 8 IBS located in Mranggen District, Demak Regency. The subjects were selected through systematic random sampling, adhering to specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data was collected using structured questionnaires that included IDDS, weight, and height measurements to calculate BMI Z-scores. Data were analyzed using Independent T, Mann Whitney U, Chi-Square, Rank Spearman Tests, and General Linear Models. Results: The subjects living at home consume a higher number (≥ 6) of food groups compared to those living in the dormitory. The malnutrition rates in dormitories are higher (40.5%). There were no significant differences in age and the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases between the two groups. The mean IDDS (5.4, p<0.001) and BMI Z-scores (0.26, p<0.001) of subjects living at home were higher than those living in the dormitory (3.7 and -0.73, respectively). The mean allowance for subjects living at home (Rp 325,948.3, p<0.001) was also higher than for those living in the dormitory (Rp. 224,913.8). Even after controlling for IDDS and allowance, the BMI Z-scores of subjects living at home remained higher than those in the dormitory. Conclusions: During the COVID-19 pandemic, IBS students who lived at home had higher food diversity and BMI Z-scores compared to those who lived in the dormitory. acceptability value and increased nutritional content compared to the control formula.

Abstract

Background: Changes in growth and development in adolescents make their health problems need special attention, which will affect nutritional status through changes in diet and lifestyle. Factors that influence adolescents' eating patterns are perceptions of body image, social media and environmental factors, and nutritional status changes. Poor consumption patterns will affect the intake of nutrients consumed by adolescents, as well as being more vulnerable to chronic diseases in adulthood. Objectives: This research aimed to determine the relationship between the use of social media, body image, and eating patterns among young dancers in the city of Bukittinggi. Methods: The quantitative method with a cross-sectional survey design approach. The population of this study was adolescents aged 14-17 years who took part in traditional dance studios in the City of Bukittinggi between January and March 2022. A sample of 47 respondents was obtained by collecting data using a questionnaire. Results: Most respondents did not know about body image (66%). Most respondents already have a good diet with a frequency of ≥3 times a day (93.6%) and consume various foods. There is no relationship between social media exposure and diet, body image, eating patterns, the frequency of adolescents’ eating patterns, and nutritional status with a p-value > 0.05. Conclusions: Teenagers, especially young dancers, must increase awareness about body image and eating patterns and be educated about how they learn and see social media.

Abstract

Background: Female Athletes Triad (FAT) is a syndrome characterized by impaired energy availability, menstrual dysfunction, and low bone density. FAT might interfere with the health and performance of young female athletes in training and competition, which causes a decrease in achievement. Research on FAT is still limited in Indonesia, especially on indigenous Papuans. Objectives: To obtain a description of young Papuan female athletes' knowledge of FAT, including the three main components of FAT: danger, impacts, and risk factors for FAT. Methods: The total sample was 61 young female athletes with a convenience sampling technique. The survey method used a questionnaire consisting of questions related to athlete characteristics (age, ethnicity, training duration, and sports) and eight questions about FAT knowledge; it includes the three main components of FAT (osteoporosis, menstrual disorders, eating disorders), dangers and impacts, and the risk factors (age and physical activity). Results: Young Papua female athletes (80.33%) lacked knowledge about FAT. Most athletes (80.33%) had never heard of FAT. Most of the sample failed to identify FAT's three main components and risk factors correctly. Only five athletes (8.20%) correctly answered questions about fracture occurrence. Only six athletes (9.84%) could identify FAT components entirely and correctly, and about 11 (18.30%) answered correctly regarding the risk of excessive physical activity in athletes. Finally, only 23 athletes (37.70%) correctly answered questions about age. Conclusions: Young female Papuan athletes lack knowledge about the FAT components and risk factors.

Abstract

Background: Obesity is still become a serious problem today. Obesity is caused by excessive adipose tissue. One of many factors that contribute to a person's obesity is food intake. Excess carbohydrate and fat intake will be stored in the form of triglycerides in adipose tissue. In the meantime, Low-Carb Diet (LCD) and Low-Fat Diet (LFD) are one of the most popular treatments on obesity. However there are many pros and cons related to each diet based on several studies. Objectives: The indicated study aims to determine the effectiveness of LCD and LFD on body composition in people with obesity. Methods: The study was conducted through journal and literature review, based on five journal publications, filtered by related keywords. In accordance to inclusion and exclusion criteria within the last ten years in Pubmed/Medline database, Science Direct, and Wiley Online Library with the keywords "Low-Carb Diet", "Low-Fat Diet", "Body Mass Index", "Lipid Levels", "Adipose Tissue", "Obese", and "Body Water". Discussion: Total body mass and fat mass decreased significantly after being given LCD intervention compared to LFD. The group that was given two dietary interventions also losing weight, but there was no changes in body water. In addition, negative effects were found from the LCD and LFD interventions such as constipation, fatigue, polyuria, nausea, vomiting, changes in appetite, and headaches. Kidney failure, ketosis, and premature coronary artery also occurred in the group that was given with LCD intervention. Conclusions: LCD and LFD interventions can affect body composition of people with obesity.

Abstract

Background: Inpatients' needs for nutrition are fulfilled by providing food services based on their specific requirements. Further, interventions focusing on improving their nutritional wellbeing can reduce their length of stay and at the same time improve the hospital's service quality. Objectives: The objective of this study is that to identify the relationship between quality of nutritional care and the patient's length of stay. Methods: This research reviews past quantitative studies available in the databases of NCBI-PUBMED, Springer Link, Cochrane and Google Scholar. They must be peer-reviewed articles published in English from 2017 to 1 October 2022, and the mean age of the patients being discussed is 18 years or more. As this study only reviews full articles, abstract-only texts were excluded. In addition, the data form the selected papers were extracted by three researchers. Discussion: From many factors influencing patient's length of stay, besides the fact that comorbidities affect the duration of the disease suffered by the patient, malnutrition during illness is the most dominant one. Comorbidities affect the duration of the disease suffered by the patient. Length of stay is influenced by patients' nutritional intake, so screening on which at hospital admission is crucial for their health status and length of stay. Conclusions: For hospitals, improving the quality of their nutrition services helps focus their attention to nutritional care, and rapid intervention can shorten length of stay. In addition, malnutrition is significantly worsened by mealtime barriers and poor food intake and prolongs length of stay.

Abstract

Background: A mother's nutritional knowledge, attitude, and children’s macronutrient intake can affect the nutritional status of elementary school-age children. Objectives: This research analyzes the relationship between a mother’s nutritional knowledge, attitude, children’s macronutrient intake, and children’s nutritional status at SDN Gedangrowo Prambon Sidoarjo. Methods: This research used a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional research design. It involved 110 students as research participants. The data were collected using multiple instruments. The research used the mother's nutritional knowledge test sheet to see the mother's nutritional knowledge knowledge. While an attitude questionnaire was distributed to investigate mothers' attitudes, the intake of macronutrients was measured using the Semi Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ). These data were then analyzed using Logistic Regression Analysis. Results: The results showed that mothers’ nutritional knowledge (p=0.002), attitude (p=0.002), children’s energy intake (p=0.001), protein intake (p=0.000) and carbohydrate intake (p=0.008) had a relationship with children's nutritional status. Nevertheless, no relationship was found between fat intake (P=0,067) and children's nutritional status. The nutritional status of children is divided into undernutrition, good nutrition, and overnutrition. Conclusions: Mother nutritional knowledge, attitude, and children’s energy, protein, and carbohydrate intake are related to children's nutritional status. There is no relationship between fat intake and children's nutritional status. Based on multivariate analysis, it is reported that protein intake has a strong relationship with children's nutritional status.
