Abstract

Fish meal is a protein source feed ingredient in poultry rations but the availability of fish meal is still limited. Maggot Black Soldier Fly (BSF) can be utilized as an alternative feed to replace fish meal because it has a protein content from 40-50%. The research was conducted at Papidoka Farm (Caringin-Bogor) from October-November 2023. This study used 60 merawang chickens on 9 weeks old with body weight of 721.8±68.6 g. The study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 5 treatments and 4 replicates for each treatment. The test results were analyzed using SPSS 2023 for analyses of variance (ANOVA) and Duncan's test. The treatments were as follows: P0 = 0% maggot meal + 10% fish meal, P1 = 2.5% maggot meal +7.5% fish meal, P2 = 5% maggot meal + 5% fish meal, P3 = 7.5% maggot meal + 2.5% fish meal, P4 = 10% maggot meal + 0% fish meal. The observed variables were body weight, body weight gain, feed consumption, feed conversion, mortality, Feed cost per gain (FC/G), and income over feed cost (IOFC). The results of the analysis of variance showed that the substitution of fish meal with maggot meal in merawang chickens had no significant effect (P>0.05) in body weight, body weight gain, feed consumption, and feed conversion. It was concluded that the substitution of fish meal with maggot meal at the level of 2.5% - 10% could not increased the performance of merawang chickens in body weight, body weight gain, feed consumption, and feed conversion.

Abstract

The system for rearing goats (Capra aegagrus) and sheep (Ovis aries) which is widely applied by Indonesian people is generally still intensive. This intensive rearing system is the physiological adaptability of livestock, especially female livestock that are currently breastfeeding. This research aimed to determine the comparison of the physiological responses of lactating goats and ewes in an intensive rearing system. This study used a quantitative research design with the T-test to compare the physiological responses of lactating ewes and goats. There were six lactating female goats and four ewes used in this study. The results showed that the THI value of the goat and sheep pens was in the severe heat stress category, but there was no significant comparison between the THI values of the two pens (P>0.05). The ocular temperature parameters of goats and sheep do not have a significant comparison (P>0.05), the surface temperature parameters of goats and sheep also do not have a significant comparison (0>0.05), while the respiration rate parameters of goats and sheep have a significant comparison (0<0,05). The correlation coefficient value between the sheep's ocular temperature and the back temperature, namely 0.96 and the rump, namely 0.68, has a positive correlation value, so that the higher the sheep's ocular temperature, the higher the temperature of the back and rump. In conclusion, lactating ewes and goats experience stress due to severe heat stress from the environment. In addition, there was no significant physiological comparison between goats and lactating ewes that were reared intensively on the physiological response parameters of ocular temperature and surface temperature. However, there is a comparison of physiological responses to respiratory rate parameters.

Abstract

The use of antibiotic growth promoters has been banned in various countries because of the risk of causing bacterial resistance to drugs and antibiotic residues, so phytobiotics are used as an alternative. One of the many commercial products known to have the potential to be used as a phytobiotic is the capsicum group. The characteristic of Capsicum is the high content of the capsaicin compound in it which is famous for its pharmacological abilities including increasing livestock production. This research is a meta-analysis research conducted to determine the effect of using capsaicin on poultry digestion. The data used in this research is secondary data extracted from previously collected journals. The data collected was then subjected to a statistical difference test to determine the differences between each treatment. The results of the analysis showed that in general the use of capsaicin supplementation increased digestive enzyme activity, feed intake, and chicken weight compared to treatment without the use of capsaicin. The statistical test results also showed that there were differences in the results of each treatment as indicated by a p value of 0.011 < 0.05 and there was a real and significant influence from the use of capsaicin on digestive assessment parameters with a p value of 0.011 < 0.05. These results show that capsaicin can be used as an alternative antibiotic for poultry to increase digestive enzyme activity, feed digestibility, increase feed intake, and increase bird body weight.
