Abstract

Social polarization in Indonesia's digital age is increasingly shaped by the fragmentation of micro-identities and the algorithmic dynamics of social media platforms. However, existing studies tend to emphasize technological or political factors while underexploring the ethical-religious dimensions that can counter such polarization. In particular, the role of moderate Islamic values as a normative and communicative framework for digital interactions remains under-theorized and under-examined empirically. To address this gap, this study investigates how Islamic principles of moderation (wasatiyyah) can be operationalized in digital communication practices to reduce polarization and strengthen social cohesion. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through in-depth structured interviews with 18 participants, including Islamic religious leaders, sociologists, and active social media users, selected based on their engagement with online religious and social discourse. These interviews were complemented by a systematic content analysis of 120 social media posts and discussions across major platforms, which were analyzed using thematic coding to identify patterns of ethical expression, interaction styles, and conflict framing. The findings demonstrate three analytical contributions. First, the digital articulation of Islamic values such as ukhuwah (social solidarity), adab (ethical behavior), and tawasuth (politeness) serves as a counter-discursive mechanism that disrupts polarizing narratives by reframing disagreements in moral and relational terms, rather than identity-based antagonisms. Second, these values shape inclusive communication practices such as dialogical engagement, self-restraint in judgment, and recognition of differences that reduce symbolic exclusion and soften ideological boundaries in online interactions. Third, the integration of moderate Islamic ethics with digital modernity produces a form of moral resilience that enhances social cohesion by balancing religious norms with the participatory logic of digital media

Abstract

The research in the kiai visionary da'wah strategy is how to take an innovative approach in mobilizing and realizing students to become independent millennial farmers. The lack of studies that examine the integration of da'wah with agricultural economic empowerment among students is one of the gaps in this study. There have been few studies that have explored the role of kiai as an agent of change in addressing the challenges of modern agribusiness today. This research is important for providing an applicable strategic model. The concrete strategies carried out by kiai in realizing millennial farmer students include: first, through the integration of the pesantren curriculum with skills. Second, vocational training programs. Third, partnership programs with external parties. In addition, kiai also implements a learning by doing model so that students are able to implement agricultural science practically. Theoretically, this research contributes to the development of contemporary da'wah theory that integrates spiritual values with agribusiness-based economic empowerment. This study can broaden the understanding that kiai are not only spiritual guides, but also agents of social and economic change. On the other hand, this research also enriches the literature on the visionary da'wah of kiai by emphasizing the aspect of economic independence of students to the needs of the millennial generation in the modern era. Meanwhile, this research can serve as a reference for Islamic boarding schools in designing agriculture-based student empowerment programs aimed at promoting economic independence

Abstract

This study examines the diffusion of Ngaji Lagu (nagham), a locally rooted Qur’anic recitation practice employing melodic patterns, and its cultural resonance within the Muslim community of Ogan Ilir, South Sumatra. Cultural resonance in this study is defined as the capacity of a religious–cultural practice to be meaningfully received, reproduced, and institutionalized across social groups, thereby shaping cultural continuity and transformation. Grounded in diffusion of innovation theory and cultural anthropology, the research aims to analyze the diffusion process of Ngaji Lagu, identify its supporting and inhibiting factors, and examine its socio-cultural and religious impacts. The study adopts a qualitative ethnographic approach conducted through prolonged fieldwork in Ogan Ilir. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. Interviews involved 28 purposively selected informants, chosen based on their knowledge, mastery, understanding, and active involvement in the practice, transmission, and development of Ngaji Lagu within the Ogan Ilir community. The informants comprised Ngaji Lagu practitioners, religious scholars, educators, MTQ organizers, and community figures who play key roles in the diffusion process. Data analysis followed an interactive model of data reduction, categorization, interpretation, and verification, with trustworthiness ensured through triangulation, prolonged engagement, thick description, reflexive analysis, and peer debriefing. The findings reveal that the diffusion of Ngaji Lagu unfolded through three phases—initiation, early dissemination, and development—facilitated by pilgrimage networks (haji nahun), cultural amalgamation, and educational–competitive arenas. Diffusion occurred through informal, formal, non-formal, media, and MTQ channels, generating innovations in melodic patterns, functional orientation, and pedagogical methods. Supporting factors include the cultural authority of key diffusors, institutional support, media expansion, and strong community demand, while inhibiting factors involve uneven distribution of MTQ-standardized teachers, limited curricular integration, and declining youth engagement. Synthesizing these findings, the study proposes the Cultural Resonance Theory of Nagham (CReToN) as an analytical framework that emphasizes resonance as a mediating mechanism between religious innovation and socio-cultural transformation.

Abstract

Despite the growing discourse on women’s empowerment within Islamic da‘wah, empirical studies examining how grassroots Islamic women’s organisations operationalise da‘wah strategies to enhance women’s social, economic, and religious participation remain limited. Existing literature largely focuses on normative or theological discussions, with insufficient attention to practical da‘wah strategies implemented at the local organisational level. Addressing this gap, this study examines the da‘wah strategies employed by the Women’s Wing of Nahdlatul Ulama (Fatayat Nahdlatul Ulama) at the Branch Leadership Council level in Jabung District, Malang Regency, East Java, Indonesia, in strengthening the role of women. This study adopts a qualitative descriptive approach, drawing on the da‘wah strategy framework proposed by Abu al-Fath al-Bayanuni. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis involving organisational leaders and members. The findings reveal the integration of three interrelated da‘wah strategies. First, sentimental strategies are implemented through spiritual and religious activities such as collective Qur’anic recitation, khatmil Qur’an, istighosah, and Qur’an memorisation circles. Second, rational strategies are enacted through organisational meetings, socialisation programmes, and structured discussions addressing contemporary women’s issues. Third, sensory strategies are realised through entrepreneurship skills training and social service initiatives that directly engage women in productive and communal activities. The novelty of this study lies in its demonstration of how classical da‘wah strategy theory is contextually adapted within a women-led Islamic organisation to create participatory spaces and foster social transformation. The findings contribute to contemporary da‘wah studies by highlighting women’s empowerment as both a strategic objective and a transformative outcome of grassroots Islamic da‘wah practices.

Abstract

Conflicts over the establishment of houses of worship in Indonesia continue to recur despite the government having established regulations such as PBM 2006 and Law No. 7/2012. This shows a gap between the legal framework and the government's communication capabilities in managing interfaith relations. This study aims to analyze the dynamics of conflicts over the establishment of houses of worship in Aceh Singkil and assess the effectiveness of government communication strategies within the framework of conflict communication theory and Islamic communication principles. The research method employs a qualitative descriptive approach, utilizing in-depth interviews with local government officials, religious leaders, and community leaders, as well as an analysis of regulatory documents. The findings show that the conflict in Aceh Singkil is administrative in nature and rooted in the mismatch between regulatory requirements and the actual needs of the community. The government's communication strategy is multidimensional, combining regulation, interfaith dialogue, and persuasive da'wah principles; however, it does not yet fully involve traditional actors who hold high social legitimacy. As a result, government communication has been effective in reducing short-term tensions but has not been able to produce long-term solutions. This study emphasizes the importance of a holistic and collaborative communication approach that involves traditional stakeholders as a sustainable strategy in religious conflict resolution.

Abstract

Religious extremism remains a persistent challenge in plural societies, requiring communication-based approaches that are both socially grounded and normatively legitimate. This study examines how a hadith-based religious moderation communication strategy, drawing on selected traditions from Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, is implemented to prevent and address religious extremism in Labuhanbatu, Indonesia. Employing a descriptive qualitative field study, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with eight key informants representing the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the Indonesian Ulama Council, religious extension workers, lecturers, and community leaders, complemented by participatory observation and document analysis. The study applies a grounded theory approach involving initial coding, categorical clustering, and analytical filtering to identify dominant patterns of moderation communication. The findings reveal a three-pillar model of hadith-based moderation communication. First, qaulan karima functions as a preventive strategy through community-based religious moderation programmes initiated by the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Second, qaulan layyina operates as a dialogical mechanism to reduce tension and manage potential conflict, particularly through inter-institutional and interfaith dialogue facilitated by the Indonesian Ulema Council. Third, qaulan sadida serves as an intervention-oriented approach, enabling flexible mediation and rehabilitative communication in situations of escalating religious tension. This integrative communication model has contributed to reducing social polarisation and strengthening tolerance without promoting theological relativism. The study contributes to dakwah and social-religious communication scholarship by conceptualising hadith-based moderation as a practical communication framework for preventing extremism in plural social contexts.

Abstract

Flooding in Medan City has had extensive social, economic, and psychological impacts on local communities, affecting tens of thousands of residents through damage to property, infrastructure loss, and prolonged trauma. These recurrent floods are largely attributable to Medan’s geographical characteristics, particularly the presence of numerous active rivers that increase hydrometeorological vulnerability. Consequently, residents are required to coexist with disaster risks, placing the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) at the forefront of flood response and mitigation efforts. This study aims to examine BPBD Medan City’s flood management strategies, its communication and coordination practices during disaster response, and the key obstacles encountered in the disaster management process. Using a disaster communication perspective grounded in Haddow’s framework, this research focuses on five dimensions: audience focus, leadership commitment, situational awareness, the role of media, and disaster communication planning. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with nine key informants selected via purposive sampling, all of whom held strategic roles and had direct experience in flood disaster management. The data were analysed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, involving data reduction, thematic categorisation, interpretation, and verification. The findings reveal that BPBD Medan City continues to implement flood mitigation within a regional autonomy paradigm, resulting in the absence of a comprehensive and strategic approach to hydrometeorological flood management. Disaster coordination remains highly centralised, with strong sectoral egos persisting across institutions and creating significant coordination gaps. BPBD also faces structural constraints, inter-agency communication barriers, and complex community dynamics, including unresolved trauma among flood victims. This study concludes that effective disaster management in Medan City requires improvements in three key areas: systematic disaster communication planning, strengthened inter-institutional coordination, and enhanced citizen participation in disaster mitigation efforts.

Abstract

This study examines the strategic orientation of Indosat’s Marketing Public Relations (MPR) in digital communication by addressing a key gap in current scholarship: despite the growing prominence of digital consumer engagement in Indonesia, limited research explicates how telecommunication brands operationalize soft-sell and hard-sell approaches within MPR frameworks and how these strategies shape relational dynamics with digital audiences. The research employs a qualitative descriptive design with purposive sampling of Indosat’s digital communication materials published between 2020 and 2024, focusing on three major campaigns: Emotional Connection, Indosat for Everyone, and Digitalization. Data were collected through systematic documentation of digital content across official social media platforms and complemented by non-participant observation, followed by thematic analysis to identify recurring narrative, visual, and relational patterns. The findings indicate that Indosat predominantly adopts a soft-sell MPR strategy manifested through emotionally driven storytelling, human-centered imagery, and value-based messaging that foregrounds inclusivity and social connection. Hard-sell elements appear more selectively and function primarily to deliver concise informational prompts related to product offerings. Analytical interpretation reveals that these soft-sell techniques strengthen brand–consumer relationships by fostering emotional resonance and perceived relational closeness, aligning with theories of emotional branding and digital engagement. The study contributes to digital communication and MPR scholarship by demonstrating how soft-sell relational strategies in Indonesia’s youth-driven digital ecosystem operate not merely as promotional tools but as mechanisms for constructing sustained brand loyalty and trust.

Abstract

This study examines the growing competition between religious and state actors in framing Palestinian humanitarian issues on Instagram. Previous studies on Palestinian digital activism on Instagram have generally emphasized emotional solidarity and content amplification but have failed to account for how religious and state actors directly compete for moral and political authority within the same platform space. Addressing this gap, this study aims to identify how these actors construct and contest narrative frames and how users negotiate meaning through their engagement patterns. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through analysis of high-engagement posts, semi-structured interviews with religious and institutional content producers, and documentation of digital footprints, which were analyzed through pattern matching within the frameworks of digital authority and moral legitimacy. Findings indicate that religious actors construct humanitarian narratives based on moral-emotional appeals and religious obligation, while state actors emphasize diplomacy, legality, and political stability. Public responses demonstrate selective alignment and open competition, which reinforce non-state narratives through heightened emotional engagement. This study enhances the comprehension of religion-state relations in digital environments by illustrating that legitimacy is not exclusively generated by formal institutions but is actively negotiated through narrative interactions, public sentiments, and platform visibility. In doing so, this research goes beyond previous studies of digital activism by positioning Instagram as an arena for contested moral and political authority, rather than simply a medium for mobilizing human solidarity.

Abstract

The development of digital media has transformed Islamic preaching from conventional methods into interactive and participatory communication spaces. Among these platforms, TikTok has become one of the most influential media for da’wah, especially among Generation Z. This study aims to analyze the role of TikTok as an Islamic da’wah medium in fostering religious imitation, sympathy, and empathy among young Muslims. This study examines TikTok’s role as an Islamic da’wah medium in shaping religious imitation, sympathy, and empathy among Generation Z audiences. Employing a qualitative content analysis of selected Islamic da’wah accounts alongside in-depth interviews with Generation Z users, this research explores how religious messages are presented, internalised, and emotionally responded to on the platform. The findings indicate that TikTok facilitates religious imitation through repetitive exposure to visible religious practices, encourages sympathy by presenting relatable moral narratives, and fosters empathy through emotionally resonant storytelling and interactive features such as comments and duets. Using a qualitative approach with a field research design, data were collected through in-depth interviews with followers of TikTok da’wah creators and observations of their content and user interactions. The findings show that TikTok-based digital da’wah plays a significant role in shaping Generation Z’s religious awareness through positive forms of social imitation. Qur’anic values such as hikmah (wisdom) and maw‘izhah hasanah (good counsel) are contextually represented, making da’wah more engaging, educational, and capable of fostering religious reflection among young social media users. Therefore, TikTok as a medium of Islamic da’wah plays an essential role in nurturing a reflective, empathetic, and contextually relevant form of religiosity within the dynamics of digital culture.
