International Journal of Visual and Performing Arts draws its contributions from academics and practitioner-researchers at the interface of new visual and performing arts. It acts as a forum for critical scholarship, innovative practice, and creative pedagogy, addressing themes that may be domain-specific (e.g. theatre, dance, music, live art, visual arts) or situated at the convergence of two or more disciplines. The journal invites original, significant, and rigorous inquiry into all subjects within or across disciplines related to visual and performing arts. It encourages debate and cross-disciplinary exchange across a broad range of approaches. The spectrum of topics includes Ethnomusicology, Karawitanology, Music Education, Dance Theatre, Movie and Television, Interior Design, Industrial Design, Media Arts, Fine Arts, Photography. These topics are addressed in full-length academic articles, critical statements on current issues, developmental practice, and reviews of books and live/media-based visual and performing arts. The journal presents an innovative platform for researchers, students, practitioners and educators to both learn from and contribute to the field. All articles are subject to initial Editor screening and then a rigorous double-blind peer-review process before publication.

Abstract

The lyrics of Bedhaya Ketawang have been interpreted too much in line with the romance of Ratu Kidul and a Mataram king, with a view that the written words convey the meaning of the dance performance. On the contrary, the meaning is often made up by later interpretation. If written words are examined without preconception, it is difficult to say the dance depicts romance. From the fact that Jayengsekar, another name of Prince Panji, appears in the lyrics of Bedhaya Ketawang, as well as that the lyrics resemble the texts of two different Panji Tales, it can be considered that the first section of Bedhaya Ketawang was taken from the Panji Tales. The Panji Tales were favoured by court people, and a script was prepared in case of the performance in the court, by which lyrics of the Panji Tales may have been collected in the court. Prince Panji and his wife had been the symbol of love since before the Mataram period; therefore, the lyrics of the Panji Tales may have been chosen to create the love-themed dance, which was later named Bedhaya Ketawang

Abstract

This research was analyzed with the aim of uncovering and knowing the transformation of the local culture of the Palembang Malay community, which has values in activities, art, or symbolic meanings that characterize the character of the local community which can be used as character enrichment in dance learning in tertiary institutions with a culture based on material content local Problem formulation; (1) what character values do Palembang Malay people have in the form of the Tanggai Dance art; (2) how is the transformation of culture-based character values in dance learning which is used as content material in Higher Education. This study uses a qualitative research method described and analyzed through an interdisciplinary approach to using a case study design in learning the Tanggai Dance at PGRI Palembang University, Department of Performing Arts Education. Data collection was carried out through observation, interviews and document study through an interactive analysis model. The results of the study show that the cultural values of the Malay people of Palembang originate from the habit of activities that give rise to art forms in the Tanggai Dance by holding the philosophy of rasan tuo and the motto of the meaning of sendok piyogo so that it is used as a reference for reflecting on character-based material content in learning Regional Dance at PGRI Palembang University which produces value in learning activities. The transformation process involves students, lecturers, and creators of the Tanggai Dance. Empirically the implementation of learning activities in schools and communities occurs in material content as a source of learning, while the Tanggai Dance functions as a work of art that has philosophy, history, and meaning in the form of dance so that Tanggai Dance is used as local culture-based material content to develop student character in Universities as prospective educators

Abstract

Museums are essential for connecting with and educating the public about their collections. A schism has developed between the public and museum institutions due to the Covid-19 pandemic's limits on museums. The inaugural exhibition of the DPR RI Museum aims to answer the challenge of readiness to recover museums' post-pandemic situation and conditions by rebuilding public involvement and communication. This study uses a mixed method equipped with research and development (R&D) using the ADDIE model product development systematics. The steps taken in organizing the exhibition are; (1) analysis of the historical context of the DPR RI building; (2) exhibition design; (3) development of 3D exhibition layout design; (4) implementation (exhibition); and (5) evaluation. A series of conferences and workshops supported the exhibition to educate the general public about the DPR RI's role as a home for the people. The results of museum content research and the development of a 3D museum layout model for exhibitions based on the validation of museum exhibition layouts are feasible to implement as a museum exhibition. Organizing exhibition events is the bond between the museum and the public, as evidenced by visitors' enthusiasm and positive response. This exhibition provided an important contribution to the post-pandemic situation, specifically as an effective and informative mode of communication in presenting the history of the DPR RI buildings to the general population.

Abstract

Place identity is related to the identity of its residents. This study reveals the concept of Pracimoyoso Hall at Dalem Keputren Pracimosono to find the colour concept that represents the canon of life philosophy for the Mangkunegaran princesses. This research applies the qualitative method, descriptive analysis, and a semiology approach by considering architecture as a sign system. The data were collected from document analysis, in-depth interviews, and field observations. Babad Tutur, Serat Jatimurti, and Serat Wedhatama were analyzed to find out the formation of women's characters as well as their roles and positions within Mangkunegaran Palace. The semiology approach is used to decode the meanings of the three books. Then the meanings are used to analyze the characters of the princesses through the semiological analysis of the physical forms of Pracimoyoso Hall to obtain the concepts. The results show that semiology can reveal the pink to the purple spectrum of candhik ayu as the canon of life philosophy for the Mangkunegaran princesses. This research contributes to providing new insights into the concept of colours as the canon of life philosophy by understanding the relationship between a place's identity and its residents' self-identity through the identification of the serat books and their implementation in architecture as a sign system

Abstract

The audience has limited information when it comes to interpreting movies, and they can even be swayed by an artistic director's failure to create a scene event space, which affects how visual messages are conveyed. This study analyzes the aesthetics of the film using an art directors practice approach to: measure the extent of the relationship between the perceptions built by the film appreciator and the visual objects he observes through Persistence of Vision, revealing the relevance of object and artistic form to mise-en-scene; and the illusion of depth and semiosis. This study uses qualitative methods and research data processing by triangulation method and content analysis. The study's findings indicate that additional disciplines, such as aesthetic philosophy, semiotics, perspective, visual communication, mise-en-scene, and art director work practices, are needed to analyse cinema aesthetics from an art director's point of view

Abstract

The kayon figure is a traditional artefact in the shadow puppet form, which has features in its shape, so this figure is often utilized as the basis for a branding design to give an Indonesian identity. However, the kayon shape does not have enough explanation to be recognized as a geometric shape. This makes some people have an ethnocentric stigma against this figure utilizes. This research aims to explain the kayon shape using mathematical aesthetics to obtain objective results. The golden ratio with experimental methods is the theory to analyze the kayon shape. The structure and size data of kayon shapes were obtained from observing 25 kayon figure artefacts of Surakarta-style shadow puppets. The main structure of the kayon figure consists of the pucukan (the top part), the genukan-lengkeh (the middle part), and the palemahan (the bottom part). The kayon shape size ratio guide is obtained from the phi value in the golden ratio number pair with the formula φ1<n=φ2. The engineering drawing of kayon shape is carried out in three steps, consisting of the base grid system, the base layout kayon, and the kayon shape outline. This study concludes that the kayon ideal form is created from a 13:7 ratio. The contribution of this research is useful to be the basis for determining the aesthetics of kayon figures (wanda kayon), as a guide for the creation of kayon figures, and as an academic appreciation that the kayon shape is a geometric shape originating from Indonesia

Abstract

Penginang Penampi dance has become part of the culture of the people of Central Lombok. Shows are held only on official occasions. The existence of the Peninang Penampi dance, which is now being threatened by modern culture, needs to be saved. This study aims to discuss the inheritance of the Peninang Penampi dance in Central Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara. This study used the descriptive qualitative method. Data collection methods to be used are interviews, observation and documentation. This qualitative research will look at art from several disciplines. The results of the study show that through the inheritance strategy of the Peninang Penampi Dance in Central Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara, many aspects can also be saved and their existence maintained, including aspects of educational values, religious values, ethical values, aesthetic values and social values. The conclusion is that the inheritance strategy for the Peninang Penampi Dance is an inheritance process that continues to move dynamically; this is because socio-cultural changes continue to occur, so this research makes an important contribution in offering a concept of an approach to inheriting traditional dance based on local values of the people of Central Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara.
